about
Daryl Knows is a bridger of genres – from amorous soul cuts and spry jittery electro, to frisky disco rarities and his uplifting house jaunts. It’s this versatility that’s made the veteran a figure in some of Singapore’s biggest festivals.

Daryl’s gig portfolio in the local bar and club circuit is compatibly expansive, filled by his duties as a longstanding stalwart resident of Headquarters, Offtrack, and Singaporean international record label, Darker Than Wax. A key member since 2016, Daryl’s been instrumental in orchestrating some of the scene’s most beloved events on behalf of Darker Than Wax, including the renowned courtyard bash, BREW, alongside the region-drawing Haw Par Thrilla spectacle with +65 promoters, Ice Cream Sundays. As a deeply embedded advocate of electronic music within the community, Daryl has also participated in historical gigs that made national headlines, spanning the pandemic-combatting #SaveMusicSG campaign and The Last Mile which bid farewell to cultural and architectural icon, Golden Mile Complex.

The seasoned tastemaker’s milestones and prospects, meanwhile, stretch beyond the Lion City. Daryl’s performance accolades have seen him support the international likes of Peggy Guo, DJ Boring, Jackmaster, Demuja, Lars Vegas (Dam Swindle), Dan Shake, Frits Wentink, Young Marco, Kornel Kovacs, Luca Lozano, Christopher Rau, Hidden Spheres and Max Graef to name a few. His career wholly embraces his love of sharing sounds to audiences from all walks of life, and this has been apparent in his international appearances in London, Tokyo, Melbourne, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali where he even played for Bestival. Daryl Knows is a true Singaporean soul with global appeal, and it shows every time he hits the decks.

  • Dean Chew

With a djing journey of more than 15 years, Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew is a highly respected dj, selector, radio host from South East Asia. Ever since the early formative years of immersing himself in raves and secret house parties during his uni years in Australia, Dean Chew aka Funk Bast*rd has been on the musical journey as for long as he can remember. He has cut his teeth playing in the legendary Zouk club / Velvet Underground in Singapore since the early 2010s and has grown a robust community around his Darker Than Wax parties and activations around the island. Together with co-founder Kaye, the duo have been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of leftfield music through the label, as well as recruiting like-minded souls to join in their cause. Being the main A+R and creative mind behind DTW, the label has flourished tremendously over the past 5 years, cementing its place as one of the go-to labels out of South East Asia. During this period, Dean has also ventured further afield, establishing links internationally and regionally, and played most recently at We Out Here festival in the UK, HÖR radio, Le Sucre in Lyon, Potatohead Bali, Dimensions Festival in Croatia, various cities in Europe, Asia, and Brazil. In 2016, he was also invited on Jamz Supernova’s BBC 1XTRA show to do a special label showcase, Rinse RM, and swung through the legendary Brownswood basement of Gilles Peterson for a 2-hour exclusive Worldwide FM mix. His extensive musical knowledge and tight mixing skills has earned him a regular spot on the station, and has proven to be one of the most trusted selectors and Djs to have emerged from the South East Asian circuit. It’s no surprise then that he has played alongside and supported some of the world’s finest like Benji B, Kyle Hall, Lefto, HAAI, Dreamcast Moe, Gerd Janson, Basic Soul Unit, Linkwood, Norman Jay, Souleance, Pearson Sound, Krystal Klear, Tiger and Woods, the late great Mike Huckaby, Seven Davis Jnr, Dj Ez, Fourtet and Dam Funk. During the lockdown in Singapore, Dean has also worked on 2 volumes of the successful 12” series “Bodyclock” which focuses on lesser known artists in the house, boogie and deep techno realms. The series have garnered support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Bandcamp Weekly, BBC Radio 6 and many more. More recently, he has also conceptualised his own venue, and through 2 years of planning and hard work, Dean finally opened Offtrack - a music-centric bar and restaurant in Singapore. The bar in a short span of a year, has not only secured a 50 best discovery list mention, but is also fast becoming known as an essential beacon for the community and traveling selectors to play when they visit Singapore. Constantly evolving and engaging through the power of music is what defines Dean Chew as an artist and most importantly as a human being. • MUTO (2)

Just visualise a metropolis blanketed in austere ruin, coloured by an ominous soundtrack with a heart of iron and stone. Such is the harsh dimension introduced by Muto Masashi, a name that’s bobbed along the surface of the Singaporean electronic scene for some time now. After years of cutting his teeth in the local DJ circuit, the Japanese selector has finally released Ishi, his debut EP that translates his imagination and influences into these dystopian musical fantasies.

  • Cora (CN)

Searing with Sichuan spice – Cora is bringing the heat from Chengdu. Orbiting the cosmic specters of techno, trance, house, bass and breakbeat, Cora’s ever-evolving sound delivers with compelling momentum and astral intuition – superimposing dramatic subplots and emotional undertows onto unfurling rhythmic narratives, while channeling an acute sensitivity to the kinetic desires of the dancefloor. All-night basement parties in the sleepless underbelly of Hong Kong’s OMA at the fulcrum of the ‘10s initiated Cora’s swift departure from the glitz and glamour of a long-time modelling career and stint as an indie film actor, towards an inspired pursuit of electronic energies and club music catharsis. An intercontinental dance savant, raving from China to Saigon and beyond – Cora has been a vital force in activating meridians between underground club scenes in East Asia and the rest of the world. Incubated over years of work, sweat and tears at dedicated nightspots The Observatory in Ho Chi Minh City and .TAG Chengdu, her nuanced aesthetic and penchant for ephemeral grooves have now synthesized into a sophisticated style of her own. After countless days and nights as the last girl on the dancefloor, Cora is one of the emerging talents providing the soundtrack to a city awakened, accelerating at a time where dance music has never been more vital.

  • Fiedel

Fiedel limitlessly undermines & overrides expectations. He's no average techno or house DJ. His sets build something new, while capturing the moment. Whether straight techno, banging 80's acid or electro funk: he always surprises. Contrast. Objection. Antithesis. This is how you might start an attempt to describe the world. A seemingly chaos of shapes and thoughts that don't belong to each other. An overall image to be found in life and in music. But that's not how Fiedel views things. Where others make distinctions, he sees connections, where others find emptiness, he finds rooms full of opportunities. Finding those harmonies, connections and contexts marks out his musical work. The synthesis of apparently opposing music, the interaction and the mix of styles and moods, without loosing the storyline, that makes out the characteristic Fiedel sound. Born and raised in Brandenburg, he finds access to the music through various artists and styles in the mid 1980s. He was influenced by artists of the old school hip hop like Mantronix and Egyptian Lover and the early works of Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk. A very important influence was Monika Dietl’s radio show at Radio 4U in West-Berlin. Her show aroused the fascination and the longing for musical freedom and diversity, that was not possible in former Eastern Germany. Those impressions gave him a first feeling, a first vision of what should become alive later on. After the wall came down, the way was open to access a fresh scene, and with it came a whole spectrum of new and old music to discover. In the beginning of the 1990s, he started DJing in public as a regular at the Monday events at Subversiv. Shortly after he began his collaboration with his befriended Errorsmith under the name of MMM. They released several productions and play live shows. Since 2000 he is resident at OstGut and later on at Berghain. On the compilation Fünf he had his first solo release on the incorporated Ostgut Ton label, followed by contributions to the compilations Various (2013) and Ostgut Ton | Zehn (2015). In 2012 he eventually founded his own label Fiedelone, to give his own productions a more personal base. In spring 2014 he developed a live set, which he premiered at Berghain. March 2017 saw his first full Ostgut Ton release with the 12" Substance B, followed up by his contribution to the Berghain mixes series in January 2018.

  • HAAN A.

Introducing Haan – the techno underdog of Singapore. With almost a decade’s worth of experience behind the console, it was his passion for vinyl records that kick started the self-taught DJ’s career. Since then, Haan has developed a unique style of house and techno music that’s brimming with groove, taking him across the deepest and darkest corners of the island’s clubbing circuit. Describing his sound as dark yet melodic, Haan quotes the likes of TIN MAN, Redshape, Locked groove and Broken English Club as his musical inspiration. Staying true to his style—one that transcends genres—he brings it in a big way to the most discerning of dance floors. Recent years saw Haan on an upward trajectory, steadily paving his way to become a household name in the local nightlife scene. Haan caught the attention of TropicLab and was invited to join the collective shortly after. He was also on the bill for Super 0’s Openair Festival and things quickly escalated thereafter. Haan markedly grew into his own; he created and ran his own nights - #ashtag at Kilo and LeftBank at Cato – to showcase emerging talents as well as veterans who hadn’t been behind the decks for some time. He is also a Promoter/DJ for local label Midnight Shift and has played alongside deck legends such as Berghain’s resident Answer Code Request, Kink, Deetron, Xhin, Oxia, Spencer Parker, Oliver Deutschmann, Surgeon on top of a list of talented DJs and producers from around the globe. With all that had been accomplished thus far, there is no doubt that Haan looks set to stay in the circuit and fly the Singapore flag high across shores.

  • Kangding Ray

There are few musicians who manage to explore the convergence between techno and experimental as successfully as David Letellier. Kangding Ray’s complex sound aesthetic tests boundaries, evolving tirelessly in its exploration of texture, rhythm, and sound design. KR has remixed artists such as Martin Gore and Ben Frost on Mute, Battles on Warp, Oscar Mulero on Polegroup or Inigo Kennedy on Token. Letellier’s foundations in rock and musique concrete give his music a vitality and uniqueness that has won fans the world over, from discerning avant-garde–electronica listeners, all the way to devoted clubbers. Those who have been following Letellier since his debut album, 2006’s Stabil, will recognize not only his meticulous and constantly developing approach to sound design, but also the conceptual gravity behind his releases. Through a string of recent EP’s and albums, culminating with the critically acclaimed “Solens Arc”, KR showed his ability to keep his artistic approach while delivering direct and powerful club-leaning tracks and darkly cinematic soundscapes. On 2015’s “Cory Arcane”, he pushed the limits of his sound even further. Relinquishing standard rhythmic structures and conventional tonal models, he delivered what is perhaps his most sophisticated release yet; a raw and visceral universe, allowing a more fluid dialogue between soul and machines. 2017’s “HYPER OPAL MANTIS” released on Stroboscopic Artefacts heralds a new era for Kangding Ray, where he explores the tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, which are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular. The means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it has produced. As he describes it himself in a recent interview : “I’ve been evolving since a couple of years at the outer fringes of the club culture, where it overlaps with different experimental and avant-garde genres. While i intend to continue to explore that zone as a free maverick, i also wanted to give something back to the scene, something strong, beautiful and functional at the same time, while retaining enough personality to be exciting.” ( Adapted from words by Vincent Morris)

  • The Weatherman

The Weatherman began noticing, and appreciating music late in his teens through local radio stations, the internet, friends and films, where interest in other musical genres mutated to obsessions. Music events from local night clubs, labels, collectives, and record shops sparked his fascination of how music allowed people to both disconnect, and connect; experiencing the possibilities of music to fit or challenge particular locations, and occasions. Often meandering through genres when dishing out DJ sets, predicting The Weatherman's forecast is often a futile venture, best to keep them ears and minds open.

  • Toppings

Co-Founder & Resident DJ at Ice Cream Sundays Hailing from Manila, Toppings (Jake Camacho) is best known for his work as co-founder, resident DJ, and core team member of Singapore-based party collective, Ice Cream Sundays. A lifelong student of music history, his exposure to diverse musical styles and traditions shines through in his eclectic approach to DJing. Rooted in deep, soulful, and psychedelic house infused with jazz, disco, funk, balearic, and afrobeat, each of his sets delivers a tasty blend of percussive grooves, playful experimentation, and—at times—pure, uncut optimism. Equally at home in a beachside booth, an intimate dark room, or playing to large, sweaty crowds, he has plied his trade at clubs and music-focused venues all over the city, including Headquarters, TUFF CLUB, CÉ LA VI, Kilo, Offtrack, Tanjong Beach Club, and Potato Head, to name a few. He has built a reputation for tasteful and versatile selection along the way, so it's no surprise he has been called on to support high-caliber acts like AlunaGeorge, Henrik Schwarz, Chaos In The CBD, Soul Clap, Jasper James, Tornado Wallace, Dekmantel Soundsystem, Floyd Lavine, Lowheads, and Bosq. He has also been invited to play at some of Singapore's largest events, representing the Ice Cream Sundays crew at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, Neon Lights Festival, Garden Beats Festival, and IMI Festival. As a DJ/promoter, Toppings co-founded Ice Cream Sundays in 2016. Over the years, the collective has become a fixture in the local nightlife circuit, throwing some of Singapore's most memorable and sought after pop-up parties. They have sold out shows wherever they spring up—whether it's a 1920s theme park, a green enclave, or a stark industrial space—while collaborating with likeminded local and regional powerhouses such as Darker Than Wax, Shi Fu Miz, and Rainbow Disco Club. And behind the decks at each of their events, you'll find the cheeky selector himself.
