about
If all went according to plan you wouldn’t be the least interested in this text. Indeed the story of young Velten who leaves his hometown in the Black Forest to find an orderly apprenticeship in Berlin and who grows up over time – such a story wouldn’t be very gripping.

Fortunately there is a club in Berlin that is called „Ostgut“ and people like Velten who like to make irrational decisions from time to time. The outcome is foreseeable: instead of sitting in the subway on his way to work, on a Monday morning, Velten much rather joins his pals in his run down flat for an after hour. Luckily these pals not only share their passion for sheer endless nights, but also start to organise event- series, open bars or turn a rundown Berlin backyard into a club. This is exactly the path that turned Velten within a short period of time into a DJ, producer and finally KATERMUKKE label boss DIRTY DOERING...

  • Audio Anonymous

Not everything is what it seems in a world plagued by uncertainty. Propaganda and misdirection are planted like breadcrumbs, on a trail leading away from truth. The binary of day to day life and the delicate fabric of society shroud reality, whilst an intricate web of lies and false innuendo mask what is, and hide what should be. Every so often a shift in the musical paradigm occurs, a glitch in the Matrix if you will, and through this anomaly, this black hole, this vacuum of bass, the truth cuts through. Given the option of taking the blue pill or the red pill, we would strongly recommend you take both! Because Audio Anonymous, the enigmas, the masters of synth, the captains of your soul, the doctors of destiny, the men who invented sound itself, will go far beyond even the farthest reaches of the rabbit hole and teach you how to truly feel. Like Daft Punk before them and most likely no one after, they prefer their identities to remain private. However this is most likely because, as rumour...

  • BASSJACKERS

In 2007, two friends decided to join forces, one DJ and one producer, both sharing great passion for house music. Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst had not foreseen what was to come when they started their collaboration. Marlon was mainly DJ-ing and playing house music, when the idea came to push Ralph’s productions in a direction where Marlon could play the tracks in his sets. After first getting noticed by Fedde Le Grand, releases and remixes followed which received massive support by all the top global DJ’s. heir big break came in 2011, when “Mush Mush” got picked up by Tiesto and released on his imprint Musical Freedom. It dominated the Beatport top 10 for over 2 months and grew to be one of the biggest club/festival tracks of 2011. Since then Bassjackers have remixed for A-list artists like Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias and Moby and played in clubs from Ibiza alongside Tiesto, to Las Vegas alongside Afrojack, and continue to tour around the globe with a recent emphasis on North America.

  • BLASTERJAXX

Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf, better known as Blasterjaxx, have spent the best part of a decade in the Top 100 DJs poll. Best known for their larger-than-life EDM anthems, which usually land via their own Maxximize Records and legacy label Spinnin’, the duo hasn’t let a lack of festival appearances slow them down. The last 12 months have seen a huge influx of material from Blasterjaxx; dropping no less than five brand new tracks in 2020, the duo also dropped their highly-anticipated remix of Armin van Buuren. They’ve still managed to perform some live stream gigs too, launching their own United We Stand stream series, as well as joining Dr Phunk and SICK INDIVIDUALS to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings earlier this year. They even performed a set at Rotterdam Airport for SLAM! Quarantine Festival. Blasterjaxx’s mission for the year ahead, they say, is to “keep big room music present”. And with the pace the duo is moving at - they're likely to be successful. ~ DJMag

  • DA TWEEKAZ

Da Tweekaz, also known as Kenth Kvien and Marcus Nordli, had been making music together for a couple of years before they got into hardstyle. They tried making different styles of harder dance music such as: hardtrance, hardhouse and hardtechno , but it wasn’t until fall 2007 that these 2 guys started their career as hardstyle producers.,Da Tweekaz got their passion fueled when their songs started to end up on different forums, MP3 sites etc. Normally this would be a bad thing for a producer, but for two upcoming producers this is what they needed; people talking about them. As a result of this they started to spend more time on tracks and one day they got contacted by DJ’s United Records. From now on they were not bedroom producers anymore, but professional producers doing what they do best, making music.,After massive releases such as Angeli Domini, Da Bomba Whatevah, Get Mad and with the help of some unofficial remixes, they had found a sound of their own. Their passion for the 8bit sound is also recognized in several of their tracks.,In 2009 they started to be well recognized DJs as well. Their first official gig was for the newly started hard dance party organizer “Hardstyle DNA”. While enjoying their residency and spending more and more time in the studio; their fan base was rapidly expanding. As a result of this, organizers from other countries started to notice the duo Da Tweekaz, and this led to gigs in UK and the Netherlands. Their DJ sets are a treat too. Da Tweekaz are not only combining their DJ skills but also their personalities, so be sure to enjoy a full DJ set complemented with humor while dancing to their beats.,In 2010 Da Tweekaz rapidly expanded across the borders. Their big dream of international fame became true when Dirty Workz approached them to join their family of producers. Their first releases under the Dirty Workz label; DNA, Be Aware, Whatevah 2010 and Hook My Mic Up where a big hit on the charts, and so was their official remix of Brennan Hearts Revival X; which they won in a remix contest made by Brennan Heart himself. Now they are in-demand producers with the agenda booked for Bassleader, Q-Base, Qontinent and gigs in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, UK and the Netherlands.,One thing is certain, by the end of 2011 Da Tweekaz will have accomplished more than they could ever dream of, and this is not the last you will hear from these two funny upcoming Norwegians.

  • Dominik Eulberg

Dominik Eulberg has two lifelong passions: music and nature. Over the course of more than ten accomplished years, he has managed to reconcile both by producing an ever-evolving but always organic and melodic brand of electronic music. The German born a.. Of course, Dominik is also a well travelled DJ who is always observing the natural world on his worldly travels. Much like a wide open landscape of flora and fauna that is always changing and mutating through the seasons, his sounds never stay still for long. As such a DJ set from the man at clubs and festivals around Europe, South America, the USA and many places in between always offer a compelling blend of physical groove and heady melody. No shade of techno or house is out of his grasp, and he can weave together deep, hard, textural, emotive and/or angelic tropes depending on what the situation requires. For Dominik, mother nature is the greatest artist of all. As a painter paints his representation of the natural world, Dominik wants to create an acoustic image that depicts how he feels about it. For example, a walk in the woods can be a blueprint for exciting music, because “in the woods you never know what is waiting for you around the next corner.” In the forest a rustle in the coppice can turn into a hookline, just like a subtle synth can become the main feature of one of his moving productions. As well as producing plenty of standout 12”s, Dominik is also a revered remixer who has worked on nearly 100 projects and music by Hot Chip, DJ Hell, Tiefschwarz, Nathan Fake, Roman Flügel and many more. In 2007 Dominik was awarded the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" for his second album Heimische Gefilde, whilst the follow up in 2011, Diorma, was just as widely acclaimed. Over the years he has always managed to stay in the press and place highly in polls by Raveline, Groove and De:Bug was well as pick up various awards for his studio and DJ work. Now a veteran of more than ten years in the game, Dominik is still as fresh as compelling as he ever was, much like the natural world in which he so passionately surrounds himself.

  • Ed Steele

Ed Steele delivers an album called 'Killing Time' on D-Nox's consistently superb Sprout imprint. (August 2020) Ed, originally from Oxford in England, but recently moved to Devon, returns to Sprout, fully armed with a virtual mountain of goodness, so let's start with the music, and we kick off with the very dramatic 'Double Take'. A haunting affair, full of drive and a moody layered soundscape, dark and mysterious, until the break lands where little glimpses of light poke through, before slamming back in to some peak time melodic techno action. We head a little deeper with 'Savour The Moment', but again are treated to some haunting elements, as this intense monster unfurls its magic, full of drive and some melancholic melodics. 'Killing Time' is a sci-fi inspired bleepy melodic winner, with hints to yesteryear, yet sounding fresh and cutting edge. Big and bold! Rounding off this sampler, we have 'Aimless. This subtle gem treats us to wonderful key changes, where darkness meets light, as an air of...

  • EELKE KLEIJN

Eelke’s life has always been intrigued by modern technology. Being fascinated by everything related to science fiction and technological developments, his interests are anything but your usual cup of tea. He is currently getting a degree in biological psychology at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. At home, his TV is tuned into Discovery Channel frequently. A real “Trekkie” perhaps as well, as he is a big fan of Star Trek. It is no surprise that Eelke enjoys watching the sky, not just on a warm summer day, but preferably at night, when he can aim his telescope at the stars and planets. It is not as severe as it sounds though, as he loves spending his free time playing video games and watching South Park. His biggest passion however is, without a doubt, music.,The world of music today is closely related to technology, something Eelke discovered at a young age. Therefore it is not strange at all that he got involved in it. “I could have easily ended up with an ICT related job”, he adds. Over the years Eelke has built and repaired a fair share of computers and also designed a variety of websites, including his own. At age 14, he got his first job working as a website designer for a music store. It gave him the opportunity to explore the studio equipment they sold in much detail, bringing home every piece of hardware he could get his hands on during the weekends.,In 2003 Eelke released his first single “4.5 Billion Years”, interestingly named after our planet’s currently estimated age, on Segment Records. This very limited 12 inch drew the attention of John Digweed and Seb Fontaine and is still held in high regard up to this day. It opened the door to labels such as Lost Language and Plastik Park. It was not until early 2006 however, that Eelke would indefinitely make an impact on the dance scene. Many months spent in the studio resulted in a series of releases, the most noticeable probably being “8 Bit Era / Import Bride” on Baroque Records which was very well received and got included on Nick Warren’s “Global Underground 030: Paris” compilation. “8 Bit Era” also received solid airtime on Dutch National radio. Ever since, many labels have taken notice of the sympathetic Dutchman, resulting in remixes for the likes of Jeff Bennett, Madoka and Snake Sedrick. In early 2007 his remix for Kosmas Epsilon’s “Paranoid” was picked up by Hernan Cattaneo for his Renaissance compilation "Sequential 2’.,It is difficult to describe Eelke’s sound in a few words though. “I am easily bored with music, I don’t like recycling sounds and ideas all the time”, he explains. His almost trancy cooperations with fellow Dutchman C-Jay indeed are very different from the dark and twisted grooves he has produced with Nick Hogendoorn and again different from the ambient and chilled-out songs he has written himself. “As with my DJ sets, I need variety in order to remain interested in what I’m doing. Producing different styles is almost like a way to express the different moods I’m in”. The recent signing of “Walkabout” on Ork Recordings with Nick is a perfect example, receiving critical acclaim from artists as diverse as Fish Go Deep, Nic Fanciulli and Anthony Pappa. Outside the Box Music, Eelke’s label launched in 2006 and part of the Groovecollection Music Management, reflects his taste in music like nothing else, with releases varying from techno-edged minimal to funky progressive house.,Spring 2007 saw Eelke taking the next leap towards fulfilling his dreams. Months of labour finally paid off when his debut artist album ‘Naturally Artificial’ was snapped up by Global Underground. It did not take the guys at GU long to see its potential. “Needless to say I am extremely happy about it!”, he adds. “Global Underground is one of the labels that have been around since the beginning, you don’t get a chance like this every day”.,So what else is there for Eelke you ask? We almost forgot to mention he is an excellent DJ as well, having played gigs in many European countries as well as Lebanon and Jordan. His monthly 2-hour radio show “Outside the Box”, broadcasted on Frisky Radio and Proton Radio, gives him the opportunity to showcase his sound worldwide. “What I love about Outside the Box is that I can do whatever I want”, he says. “It is almost like trying to educate people with different sounds, I can play deeper than at an average club night”.,Meanwhile Eelke has continued his work in the studio, a variety of news tracks and remixes are due throughout 2007. Success doesn’t come overnight, something we all know and this has also been the case with Eelke. Rest assured, though, that this is probably not the last we will hear from Mr. Kleijn.,Last Edited: June 2007,Biography additions made by: Peter van Hal (Deep Records / Deep Focus)

this page is runned by Format:B – Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand. It’s the official Page…!,Format:B are Franziskus and Jakob. Jakob is a Berliner, from Kreuzberg to be exact. As all good parents do, his wanted him to play an instrument. After years of successfully dodging music lessons and his parents wishes, he finally at the subtle age of 15 decided that he desperately needed a bass guitar, which then through diligent practice manoeuvred him from hardcore bands to funk and jazz bands. But suddenly, there was a small problem: he liked Techno parties much better than rock concerts. So, as one does, he began buying the odd techno maxi here and there until one day little Jakob thought to himself: Why heck, I can do that too! So off he went and bought himself an overpriced Atari St40 and a cheap synthesizer, only to realize that oops those guys from Detroit really do know what theyre doing and that it wasnt that easy after all. Well, that is basically where Jacobs ambitiously planned out life suddenly took a screeching of the wheels turn in another direction. Franziskus is from Erfurt, a small and rural part of Germanys quite rough and wild East, which didnt stop him from starting piano lessons at the innocent age of 6. His musical interests took him from the usual suspects like Michael Jackson and The Pet Shop Boys through to Hardcore (obviously not on the piano). But then one day, or night to be exact similar to Jakob, all was to suddenly change.. A fortuitous night out at the legendary E-Werk in 1993, made this young mans heartbeat skip from Chopin over to a 4/4 beat where it was to remain, probably forever. Three years later Franziskus took up residency at the infamous Sub ground Lighthouse After hour, resulting in numerous further bookings. The paths of these two young men crossed whilst they were both studying to be sound engineers. Seeing as all the other students in there year were long haired Metal heads it was only a matter of time until their paths crossed. So, after spending a few long Berlin party nights together they decided to see if they could start a project together. And so the story ends or better yet, begins with Format:B

Clearing space, getting rid of clutter, and optimizing the flow of energies: These are the principles of Feng Shui, but it’s also a very precise description of the sound of Hatikwa. The producer from North Germany gained popularity for his minimalist approach towards Progressive Trance, an approach that might take different directions but that always proves to have compelling hypnotic powers. Hatikwa is one of those artists who reached a career breakthrough via Social Media. Discovering hardstyle music and its dedicated scene changed his life. From that moment on, he committed himself to becoming the best producer in the hardstyle genre. He locked himself up in his tiny bedroom studio, in the attic of his parents’ house in Veenendaal, and quickly learned the ropes of producing. Unaware of the revolution he would start, the foundations of the Headhunterz sound were made. Headhunterz’ new take on Hardstyle music made the genre grow into an international phenomenon. It was no longer just the sound of European raves, but became something worldly. Headhunterz made new audiences fall in love with the unstoppable energy of Hardstyle music. 7 years after visiting his very first hardstyle party he was on top of his career, with each new track captivating both his fanbase and artists outside the scene.

  • James Hype

James Hype has proven himself to be arguably one of the UKs most important artists with his bootlegs and remixes consistently forming the cornerstone of UK and international dancefloors, alongside his singles regularly clocking tens of millions of streams. He has also been able to set the bar of what is humanly possible as a DJ in dance music, serving as a product ambassador for Pioneer DJ. Growing up in Liverpool in the North of England, James Hype took to DJing at the age of 15, and by 16 had taken to DJing house parties and birthdays for his friends. James reflects that he was “fascinated by grime instrumentals” at the time, listening to BBC 1Xtra and watching music videos showing the DJs using the decks, and committed to learning to emulate what he was watching. After cutting his teeth in the local club circuit and spending every spare hour sharpening his now signature skills, James Hype found the need for upbeat, club-ready remixes of usually slower records compelling. This led him to create his own edits of tracks which were prolific in the charts but needed an extra dose of energy to suit the dancefloors he was playing to. This then expanded his name from resident DJ to in-demand touring DJ. Using online platforms such as DJCity and Soundcloud, James continued to gain notoriety and with the exponential success of his remix of Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’, James had exploded onto the national scene with keen eyes anticipating original material to come.

  • PAUL KALKBRENNER

Even though reality shows have been trying to prove otherwise, a successful career as a musician, even as a pop star, cannot be forced with a pre-packaged crash course. As of 2010, Paul Kalkbrenner has tallied up more than 15 years of experience as a producer and live act, all the while learning what it means to go purposefully from one step to the next. When the Berlin Wall fell, he was 12. The soundtrack of his youth, and of the majority of his generation, was still in its infancy, awaiting its breakthrough: techno music.,The fall of the wall meant reunification, but above all, a sense of no holds barred. The eastern part of the city became the anarchic, creative playground for a euphoric youth, now freed from bureaucracy. The early 90s were formative years for a young Paul Kalkbrenner as well. Eventually, in one of many long and sleepless nights on the dancefloors of E-Werk, Planet and Whale, the dream was born to make music himself, and anything less important would be put aside. A job as TV editor got him through the mid-90s and financed his first music gear. By this point Paul had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people’s records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks were released in 1999 on Berlin-based BPitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city’s east. A series of further singles and two full-lengths (Superimpose and Time) followed, plus continuous live performances that threatened to shatter the grid of his calendar.,Together with Paul Kalkbrenner, BPitch Control gained a strong momentum. Interviews in respected German magazines like Spex and De:Bug paved the way for regular international bookings. The Lufthansa fetishist had now become a frequent flyer. Paul’s third album Self (2004) would mark the beginning of a new era. His melodic sound, with its affinity for grand emotional gestures, obeyed the logic of the dancefloor, but Self introduced a narrative aesthetic, serving as a soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist (at least, not yet…). It was Paul’s most musical and mature album to date, although still taking cues from the dancefloor and rave culture, offering a first glimpse of what was yet to come. "Gebrünn Gebrünn”, released one year later, became a crossover hit found in every DJ’s record bag and finally cemented Paul’s status as a Techno MVP.,In early 2006, German director Hannes Stöhr, an avid fan of Self, decided to get in contact with Kalkbrenner. His idea was to produce a film about a musician in Techno City during the new millennium, and Paul would compose the soundtrack. The two met, traded ideas and experiences, and soon after began working on the screenplay’s first draft. In the course of their exchange, Hannes had the realization that Paul should not just contribute the music, but that he would be the perfect choice as the film’s star. Without hesitation, Paul accepted the offer. They decided to title the film Berlin Calling. For the soundtrack’s production, Paul and his friend (and BPitch colleague) Sascha Funke spent half a year in Cézanne’s hometown of Aix-En-Provence in southern France.,Unencumbered by the cold, gray Berlin winter, Paul devoted himself entirely to the musical aspect of the project. One song already had a title: “Sky and Sand” with vocals by Paul’s brother Fritz. Upon Paul’s return to Berlin in 2007, the filming began, and the finished work was brought to German theaters in October 2008. Berlin Calling and Paul’s debut acting performance received positive reviews, and the film, thanks to its authentic depiction of the Berlin club scene and drug culture, became, slowly but surely, a cult classic.,The soundtrack and especially the single “Sky and Sand” broke all sales records. That track in particular went gold in Belgium where it remained in the charts’ Top Ten for weeks. The 2009 DVD release of the film brought Paul to a new, much larger audience around the world. By the end of the year, Paul separated with BPitch Control after a decade-long relationship to take the next steps of his career alone. In early 2010 Paul completed a twelve-city live concert tour throughout Europe (with over 50,000 tickets sold within just a few weeks), followed by many headlining appearances at summer festivals. More tours and new challenges await him.

  • Switchbox

Switchbox started with two friends and their passion for analogue equipment and techno. The story begins with the building of their studio, where they started experimenting in music production back in the 90’s, leading to the next step for them, which was to take a whole bunch of hardware equipment from their studio to perform live sets at parties around Germany. This is when they started to be known on the local German techno scene as Switchbox. After spending time exploring production also in different genres and in other projects, the guys found their way back to their techno roots and gave themselves a new burst of Switchbox energy in the studio, giving them a new lust to once again explore the techy way of the electronic universe. After being occupied in the studio for which turned into years, of producing and sharing their music directly to the dance floor, it was time to put energy into making tracks which were more refined and accessible for record label release...

One of Cologne’s youngest and brightest electronic music stars on the rise, Tim Engelhardt didn’t gatecrash the scene out of leftfield, but started his path to connoisseurship fairly early on: trying to rewrite the piano pieces he had to practice at the tender age of eight, he showed an independent creative mind from the get-go – a character trait that would prove exremely helpful for a later career as electronic music producer. But it was only when Tim later discovered the releases of Cologne techno luminary Robert Babicz that synthesizers and bass drums moved into focus – a brilliant producer, live performer and mastering engineer with a keen sense for sonic detail, Babicz became the perfect role model for young Tim, inspiring our hero to seek out his own place in electronic music while honing a concise understanding for all facets of production.
