  • Amelie Lens

Amelie Lens has risen rapidly through the European techno ranks over the past couple of years. She’s now consistently high up the bill (if not topping it) at events like Awakenings, DGTL and Ibiza staples DC-10 and Hï, and this year debuts in the Top 100 DJs poll. The Belgian’s Lenske label has simultaneously gone from strength to strength, building its name around the five-person crew of AIROD, Farrago, Milo Spkyers, Ahl Iver and Lens herself. Granite-tough techno is the name of the game; epic vibes suited to the cavernous hangars Lens fills on a regular basis. And with its newest addition — Lens’ ‘Higher’ EP — the label has now dropped 13 releases in just two years. ~ DJMag

  • Ben Klock

Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock is without a doubt one of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history. A resident at Berghain since its opening in 2004, he has been able to leave his mark on the club’s unique sound, in turn the special space influenced Klock’s approach as a DJ and producer as well. Playing techno sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves, releasing records on Ostgut Ton and last but not least the aesthetics of his own label Klockworks (founded in 2006), have earned him an excellent international reputation over the last few years. Supported by stringent and enthralling tracks, remixes for such diverse artists as Kerri Chandler, Martyn or Depeche Mode, the revered debut album “One” on Ostgut Ton and his Berghain mix, Ben Klock’s name is synonymous with the vitalization of an essential definition of techno.

  • ANNA

A couple of years after winning the Beatport Breakthrough Award in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll, ANNA enters the list at No.95. Known to her parents as Ana Miranda, she went from playing to a 1,500-strong crowd at the age of 14 in her home country of Brazil to fronting DJ Mag North America in 2019. New music from ANNA has been huge in festival sets for many world-leading techno DJs all summer. Then there was the richly deserved Essential Mix for the BBC that started 2019 off right, as the Brazilian distilled 20 years of DJing experience into an inspiring two-hour techno masterclass. DJ Mag rightly recognised her talents, putting her on the cover of their North American edition in February, a nod to the breakaway impact she’s had on that region.

  • Héctor Oaks

As one of Europe’s most wanted underground weapons, Héctor Oaks style stands out for playing the unexpected and the highly engaging. As DJ, producer and label head his take on techno resonates by combining the contemporary with hand-picked tracks from the history of rave culture. Héctor Oaks has been behind the turntables for almost half of his life. Gaining his first credits in Madrid's underground, it was when he relocated to Berlin, that his DJing really took off. Not long after his move to the German capital, the trained sound engineer released his first vinyl releases on KEY VINYL. This kick-start into the fertile soils of Berlin’s underground lay the foundation of a career, that has taken off internationally in the past years. It’s the dancefloors that taught this DJ his outstanding empathy and intuition for the sounds, that make a crowd vibrate. Constant practice and the dedication to music shaped his style. Known for his stamina and mixing skills, it is his selection that truly stands out. What seems eclectic on the first sight, is a well-curated mix of vinyl gems. Héctor Oaks seeks for the sweet spot between tracks that are connected not by genre but vibe and style. As vinyl-only DJ, his selection thrives on Oaks’ passion for digging in record shops all around the world. Not to mention the years in Berlin ́s infamous Record Loft, that served the local scene with an outstandingly broad selection of 2nd hand vinyl. When in the mood for a proper rave, you will find Oaks playing under his alias Cadency. The moniker is home to the more explorative side of genres: breaks, ghetto, oomphy grooves and a pinch of funk. As Oaks’s calls it: techno body music gone pop. Cadency’s appearances are rare, so catch them while they’re hot.

  • Joris Voorn

Joris Voorn sits at the epicenter of the Dutch electronic music scene, the most renowned and instantly recognisable artist from Holland, representing underground house and techno on a wider global stage. For a country with a population of just seventeen million Holland’s contribution to world electronic music is unsurpassed. While house and techno trace their roots to the marginal and mainly black American underground, its taken a relatively small country in the European lowlands to flip electronic music on its head and turn it into the global powerhouse it is today. In 2016 few could deny that Amsterdam is the global capital of electronic music and few artists embody the melting pot of musical influences that define the city’s underground techno scene more than Joris Voorn. ~ Resident Advisor

  • Rebekah

Generally billed just by her first name, Rebekah Teasdale is a DJ and producer from Birmingham, England who has been active since the mid-'90s. Like most figures of the Birmingham techno scene, her tracks are often hard, dark, and minimalist, with heavy pounding beats and gradual suspenseful development. An avid clubgoer since her youth, she began spinning records in 1996, at the age of 16. She spent several years as a model in order to provide financial support for her DJ career. She released an edit of the Mighty Dub Katz's house anthem "It's Just Another Groove" in 2004, but her first original productions, starting with 2007's "Toad in a Hole," were minimal tech-house. By the early 2010s, her sound had gotten darker and heavier, and she eventually caught the attention of Chris Liebing, who released Rebekah's Cycles EP on his CLR label in 2013. ~ AllMusic

  • Adriatique

After getting to know each other in Zürich in 2008, Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer became inseparable, not just as friends, but also as artists. The two men carved out a career as one of the most consistently delivering DJ/producer duos in the house and techno scene: Adriatique. The key to an enduring partnership is, of course, to complement each other, and the two Adrians do so admirably. Music-wise, their various tastes combine into one unique sound, and their respective preference for studio work and performance means that both aspects are equally well covered. Adriatique’s DJ performances as well as their productions are long, meditative, relentlessly building affairs, ever challenging the listener with subtle twists interrupting their hypnotic groove. There is more to the duo than just a well-oiled electronic music machine, however. They also live together, draw plans together, and support art in all its forms together. ~ Official Website

Since launching his career in 2007, he has performed at countless festivals and clubs throughout the world, and released dozens of records for labels like Drumcode and CLR. While his singles tend to be functional tech-house and minimal techno tracks, his albums demonstrate his versatility, from the downtempo and drum'n'bass cuts on 2010's Save My Soul to selections on 2020's Metamorfosi that draw from garage house and Goa trance. ~ AllMusic

Spain-based producer Eric Estornel initially reserved the name Maceo Plex for his festival-friendly house productions before gradually taking the project into a darker, more introspective direction. After establishing himself in the techno world for his work as Maetrik beginning in the early 2000s, and exploring more abstract electro and IDM as Mariel Ito around the middle of the decade, he began releasing some of his most accessible tracks under the Maceo Plex handle starting in 2009. Over the course of the following decade, the project evolved from deep, sexy house with prominent Chicago and Detroit influences (such as on debut full-length Life Index) to a significantly more dramatic sound (particularly the ambitious Solar). • Marcel Dettmann

DJ and producer Marcel Dettmann is recognised as one of the most influential proponents of contemporary techno. Widely associated with iconic trademarks including Berlin, Berghain and Hard Wax, Dettmann stays true to his roots by consistently innovating his interpretation of electronic music, integrating art with the scene. Raised in the former GDR, in a small town near Berlin, Dettmann had already begun to develop his passion for electronic music in his youth. Bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and Front 242, as well as post-punk and industrial, count as his earliest influences, long before he discovered his affinity for techno. His hometown lacked a record store specialising in electronic music, so between 1995 and 1998 Dettmann began selling vinyl from his own home. He purchased records from various distributers, Hard Wax amongst others, both to resell to his friends and to cement the foundation for his own considerable collection. Like many of his friends, the mid-nineties saw Dettmann frequenting Berlin’s nightlife. This included club institutions E-Werk and Tresor where the resident DJs of that time aroused his passion for the Chicago and Detroit influenced sound. In 1999, after many (including self-organised) parties, his turning point came; Dettmann began to work as a resident DJ at Ostgut, Berghain’s predecessor. Shortly thereafter upon receiving a job offer from Hard Wax, he finally moved to Berlin. His apprenticeship as a vinyl buyer and seller as well as DJ, granted him an extensive depth of musical knowledge and intuition. Dettmann quests tirelessly for new ways and inspiration to further develop his own concept of electronic music. His label MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records) serves as a platform upon which to shape his musical vision, and through its releases, to launch new talent onto the techno scene. As a curator and producer, Dettmann fosters the call to create in a way which is equally timeless and innovative. His own releases comprise two albums on Ostgut Ton, numerous singles and remixes for artists of various genres – Junior Boys, Fever Ray, Moderat, Commix, Clark and Laibach to name a few. Furthermore, he has produced compilation albums for London’s fabric club, Berlin’s Berghain, the Belgian techno label Music Man and one issue of the DJ Kicks compilation series on !K7 imprint. Outside of the club context, Marcel Dettmann has established himself as a multi-faceted artist. He designed the sound concept for „New Works“, an exhibition of photographer Frederike von Rauch, contributed to the contemporary dance project „Masse“ – together with Frank Wiedemann and choreographer Nadja Saidakowa in cooperation with Berghain and the Berlin State Ballet. His single “Seduction feat. Emika” provided the soundtrack to director and screenwriter Parker Ellerman’s short film of the same name. As a passionate DJ and one of the faces of Berghain, Dettmann seeks to inspire his listeners with sounds both reduced and rough, balanced by emotional and surprising moments throughout his sets. Between pure techno, banging Chicago, tracks old and new of the past twenty-five years, Marcel Dettmann communicates his message with an apparent effortlessness.

In the last year Perc has diversified with remixes for Factory Floor on DFA, Black Asteroid on Electric Deluxe, Mike Parker on Edit Select and Oscar Mulero on Warm-Up, plus two EPs; the searing statement of intent that is ‘A New Brutality’ on Perc Trax and Guardian single of the week ‘Pure & Simple’ on Sleaze. This coupled with his busiest ever year of gigs including debut appearances in Argentina, Australia, Singapore and Finland has meant his sound is better known and more influential than ever before. • Richie Hawtin

Richie Hawtin played an essential role in developing the sound of minimal techno, as well as spreading its popularity throughout the global club scene. Most famous for his experimental acid techno productions as Plastikman, including the classic albums Musik (1994) and Consumed (1998), he is equally well-regarded for his groundbreaking live sets and mix CDs (especially 1999's Decks, EFX & 909) which utilize cutting-edge DJ technology, fusing loops of techno records with additional synthesizers and drum machines. Initially based in Windsor, Ontario and connected with the techno scene in nearby Detroit, he co-founded the highly influential Plus 8 (and its harder sublabel Probe Records) along with John Acquaviva, later establishing Minus and relocating to Berlin during the early 2000s, just as minimal techno began receiving mainstream exposure. Hawtin has continued pushing the limits of technology, developing highly conceptual events which are often intertwined with the art world. ~ AllMusic

He also wanted his label to retain the ‘club music’ brand, something he strives for with every Afrojack release. 2011 also saw Afrojack sign a landmark deal to become one of the first ever DJ’s to sign an annual residency in Las Vegas, at the legendary Wynn Hotel. The residency saw Afrojack perform over a dozen times a year at Wynn clubs including Encore Beach Club, Surrender, Tryst and XS.,From there the success continued; as well as making club hits and collaborating with the likes of David Guetta (co-writing and producing the worldwide smash ‘Titanium’), he also began to team up with and write for A-list pop artists around the world, including Madonna and Chris Brown. In 2011, he co-wrote and produced ‘Give Me Everything’ for Pitbull and Ne-Yo, which to this day has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and reached #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts. For his fourth consecutive year he returned to headline Creamfields and at the Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowworld, he debuted his own ‘Jacked’ stage showcasing his Wall artists. He also found time to shoot a documentary web-series, ‘March of the Afrojack’, which gave fans an insight into the real person behind the Afrojack moniker. This spring he returns to Miami as headliner on the Ultra Music Festival and to give his loyal fans a first taste and preview of his highly anticipated album set for release this May.,Given Afrojack’s immense popularity and influence on the music industry it is no surprise that many corporate brands have flocked to him for brand partnerships. Afrojack recently announced a partnership with globally celebrated fashion label ‘G-Star Raw’ for his own line of Afrojack inspired designs that will be sold worldwide. He was also sought out by leading gaming company, Razer, to be a brand consultant on the development of future products. Further, this January saw Nick’s latest single, ‘Ten Feet Tall’, premiere as a part of Bud Light’s new commercial during the Superbowl.,Afrojack has built a global brand that is recognized for influencing attitudes and championing new levels of change for the music world. • Anastasia Kristensen

If you had to melt down the appeal of Anastasia Kristensen to just two words, it could well be ‘energy flash’. There are a few reasons it’s a snug fit: for a start, the immediate associations are smoke and strobes, lasers and lights, big-league rave bliss and barely-marshalled sonic chaos; that is to say, maximum fun from a dancefloor perspective, something Kristensen keenly channels as a DJ. The character she exudes as a person, and not just a playlist-for-hire, mirrors it too: a whirlwind in the booth, it’s rare not to see her wide grin glinting through a motion blur of fader tricks, sashaying and vigorous air drumming. There’s also the perfection of imperfection in a flash of energy, a sense of freedom in the face of stultifying codes and norms. Kristensen embodies this, giving the best show of herself in any given point of time without being performative or buttoned-up. It makes for a refreshingly authentic and human to her burgeoning career in music, a gift that makes curious onlookers instant fans.
  • Andy C

Andrew John Clarke is a British DJ and record producer and is co-founder of RAM Records, a pioneering label in the drum and bass genre. Andy C was a DJ in his own right but gained a strong reputation and more bookings off the back of the successful "Valley of the Shadows" track, an early drum and bass track that walked the line perfectly between hardcore and drum and bass just as the genres were starting to split. The track, created and released by Origin Unknown (made up of Andy C and Ant Miles)—often referred to as "31 Seconds" or "Long Dark Tunnel" because of the samples it incorporates—made use of a heavy bassline, bell samples and a rolling drum track to produce a popular, easy to recognise track that was easy to mix and became a favourite in dance floors at raves across the UK and beyond. The track was released as an EP in 1993[7] and has been remixed and re-released several times, and is widely recognised as one of the most influential drums and bass tunes of the early 90s.

  • CLAUDIO PRC

̸BIOGRAPHY Italian DJ and electronic music producer born in 1987 in Sardinia, based in Berlin. Creating sonic bridges from the literal, perceivable world into mythical, imaginal realms is what Sardinian-born and Berlin-based DJ and Producer Claudio PRC might be best known for. Since appearing in the Italian deep techno scene in 2006, he has developed an immersive sound world inspired by a fascination with Detroit techno and electroacoustics. By studying Music and New Technologies, he gained sonic and tonal combination skills - this, paired with a conscious, philosophical approach, has led him to create a distinct sound. A sound that understands electronic music through a cyclical, cosmic lens. Instead of using extravertive elements, he enhances the overall experience through a wide-screen appeal, playing with spatial awareness through details and taking the audience on a journey into the all-or-nothing of sound. Following the first album “Inner State” on Prologue Music in 2012, Claudio released long players on Semantica Records and his co-founded label, TGP (The Gods Planet). An undeniably profound connection to the island of Sardinia is palpable in all of his works. It surfaces through the relationship with his home base collective Basstation in Cagliari or the appearance of oceanic references in his music like in his most recent, well-received EP “Challenger Deep” on the dutch label Delsin Records (2022). In 2020, Claudio founded 012, a platform for art and sound research. 012 is a canvas to live the unconstrained and interconnected nature of artistic vision. Next to being a label showcasing collaborative work, it is also a curated night held at several clubs across Europe. Collaborations include closely connected artists such as Luigi Tozzi or, more recently, Blazej Malinowski. Over the years, he created a flourishing ecosystem of artists and producers and invites them to join 012 or to his ambient-explorative radio show Deepartment. The combination of audio and visual experiences is as important as the connection between the real and the imaginal in Claudio’s work. One apparent example was his performance “From the nebular stars to the mosses on the granite rocks” during Berlin Art Week in 2015. Like in everything he does, a Claudio PRC DJ set is a meticulously sewn journey. This makes him a key protagonist in the emerging world of hypnotic techno, playing regularly at an international level at the most reputable festivals and clubs. Resident DJ at Prague’s Ankali, from 2023 on Claudio PRC is holding a residency at Berlin’s long-standing Techno institution Tresor. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Creating sonic bridges from the literal, perceivable world into mythical, imaginal realms is what Sardinian-born and Berlin-based DJ and Producer Claudio PRC might be best known for. Da Tweekaz, also known as Kenth Kvien and Marcus Nordli, had been making music together for a couple of years before they got into hardstyle. They tried making different styles of harder dance music such as: hardtrance, hardhouse and hardtechno , but it wasn’t until fall 2007 that these 2 guys started their career as hardstyle producers.,Da Tweekaz got their passion fueled when their songs started to end up on different forums, MP3 sites etc. Normally this would be a bad thing for a producer, but for two upcoming producers this is what they needed; people talking about them. As a result of this they started to spend more time on tracks and one day they got contacted by DJ’s United Records. From now on they were not bedroom producers anymore, but professional producers doing what they do best, making music.,After massive releases such as Angeli Domini, Da Bomba Whatevah, Get Mad and with the help of some unofficial remixes, they had found a sound of their own. Their passion for the 8bit sound is also recognized in several of their tracks.,In 2009 they started to be well recognized DJs as well. Their first official gig was for the newly started hard dance party organizer “Hardstyle DNA”. While enjoying their residency and spending more and more time in the studio; their fan base was rapidly expanding. As a result of this, organizers from other countries started to notice the duo Da Tweekaz, and this led to gigs in UK and the Netherlands. Their DJ sets are a treat too. Da Tweekaz are not only combining their DJ skills but also their personalities, so be sure to enjoy a full DJ set complemented with humor while dancing to their beats.,In 2010 Da Tweekaz rapidly expanded across the borders. Their big dream of international fame became true when Dirty Workz approached them to join their family of producers. Their first releases under the Dirty Workz label; DNA, Be Aware, Whatevah 2010 and Hook My Mic Up where a big hit on the charts, and so was their official remix of Brennan Hearts Revival X; which they won in a remix contest made by Brennan Heart himself. Now they are in-demand producers with the agenda booked for Bassleader, Q-Base, Qontinent and gigs in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, UK and the Netherlands.,One thing is certain, by the end of 2011 Da Tweekaz will have accomplished more than they could ever dream of, and this is not the last you will hear from these two funny upcoming Norwegians.

  • Denis Sulta

Glasgow-based DJ/producer Hector Barbour (aka Denis Sulta) creates vivacious, melodic house with underground sensibilities. Born in Glasgow in 1993, he grew up with a keen interest in dance music, landing his first job at the infamous record shop Rubadub. It was during his tenure there that he took up both music production and DJ'ing under the guidance of his co-workers, who were all very passionate about the scene. His early tracks were darker in tone, but as he started playing more and more gigs, his music became more uplifting. To reflect the change in style, he reversed the name Atlus to Sulta and adopted Denis as a prefix (originally spelled "Dennis," a printing error led him to drop an "n" in favor of Denis). From there he went on to release EPs, eventually setting up his own label and brand, Sulta Selects. Barbour took the brand on a global tour, which became so popular that it spawned a full festival, FLY Open Air: Sulta Selects, held at Hopetoun House just outside of Edinburgh. ~ AllMusic

  • Enamour

Washington D.C.-based producer and DJ specializing in melodic deep & progressive house and hypnotic tech house & techno. Enamour has become a definitive name of the dance floor, creating masterful soundscapes with no boundary of range: his productions infuse dreamy melodies of deep house, the potent power of progressive house and the smoldering, alluring momentum of dark techno. Enamour is Michael Gold, who was raised near Washington DC -- home to institutions of electronic music like Flash and U Street Music Hall as well as legendary acts like Sharam and Dubfire -- a city invariably considered a hidden heart of the genre in the United States. Long before he could enter a club, Gold found an early interest in music with the piano. A few years later, his fascination continued with guitar, then jazz, indie and later dance -- his passion for music unchanging, despite his evolving taste. His musical intrigue did not go unnoticed, especially as he began DJing open format around DC. Self-taught and curious, an interest in learning how to edit songs together for friends took him down a rabbit hole experimenting with Reason and Ableton and soon, Enamour was born. Enamour’s music has never been pigeonholed in any one genre -- with each new exploration as technical as the next -- a reflection of his eclectic musical upbringing and his foundation in music theory combined with the prowess of a seasoned producer. As a result his production touch is as intricate as it is effective and emotive, proven by his consistent ability to produce tracks that are equally enjoyed as listening experiences at home as they are pouring loudly through a club’s sound system. With each and every one of his releases, he’s continually made fans out of esteemed curators like Pete Tong and Danny Howard as well as leaders like Sasha, Guy J, and Mark Knight. He’s also made his mark as a coveted remixer, reworking the likes of Lane 8, Above & Beyond, Hayden James and Cassian, to name a few. Some of the most renowned institutions of dance music were quick to back those stamps of approval, with Mixmag inducting him into their hand-selected Magnified team of artists on the rise and DJ Mag crowning him “one to watch.” Undeniably, Enamour has become a global presence while also doing his hometown proud as an outstanding mainstay on the legendary Yoshitoshi label, which also calls Washington DC home. Beyond, he’s also released on several of the genre’s most exciting labels including Last Night on Earth, Anjunadeep, Future Classic, Kindisch, Lane 8’s This Never Happened, Rufus Du Sol’s Rose Avenue, Desert Hearts Black, mau5trap and more. Enamour has toured across India, Argentina and North America, playing at Burning Man as well as esteemed venues like The Brooklyn Mirage, Miami’s Treehouse, The Bow in Buenos Aires, Los Angeles’ Sound Nightclub and Washington DC’s own Flash and Echostage. Today, Enamour’s world is limitless. His ability to effortlessly weave and maneuver across the vibrant spectrum of electronic music both in his original productions and dynamic sets has captivated enthusiastic dance floor movers -- enamoured them, if you will -- from all around the world. No boundaries ahead and with plenty of new releases incoming, Enamour only has further and farther to go from here.

  • GARETH EMERY

To say Gareth Emery has had a good year would be a vast understatement. Over the past twelve months, the popularity and buzz surrounding the young Brit reached explosive proportions, culminating in him being voted no.9 in 2009’s definitive DJ Mag Top 100 poll: one of only a handful of DJs to crack the world’s top ten before the age of 30.,Was this down to producing pure club anthems like Exposure and Metropolis alongside stunning remixes for Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond, all of which led to him spending more time at the top of Beatport’s trance chart than any other artist in ‘09? Maybe it was the launch of his new Garuda label and club night, responsible for selling out Manchesters iconic Sankeys club four times in a row whilst releasing his critically acclaimed compilation ‘The Sound Of Garuda’. Or perhaps it was the sheer amount of people he played to, banking half a million air miles travelling to over one hundred gigs at some of the world’s finest clubs and festivals. Whatever the reason, one thing is for certain: he’s on fire like never before.,Of course, what seems like ‘overnight’ success is usually the result of years of hard work, and Gareth Emery is no exception. He started learning the piano at 4, and whilst he’d completed his classical music training before he’d finished school, his real interest lay elsewhere, initially in guitar-based sounds. This was the UK in the mid-90s with Britpop and indie the order of the day, although as one might expect, Emery was no slouch, following the footsteps of Green Day and Oasis by headlining Southampton’s legendary Joiners venue at the age of just 15 with his band at the time. But it was a chance trip to Ibiza in 1998 that opened his eyes to the appeal of dance music, and after spending the next three years learning to make music with computers and midi, rather than guitars and pianos, he wrote his first electronic classic: the seminal ‘Mistral’, famously made whilst on holiday in France on a £500 laptop. Plenty more were to come.,These days, his records (which are composed, produced, and engineered entirely by him), span the worlds of trance, progressive, electro, techno, and a few other places. Languid, spacey grooves, juddering basslines and original melodies that take your breath away mean that it’s a given that Armin, Tiesto, Oakenfold, and Judge Jules have all been fully paid-up members of the Emery fan club for years. But more importantly, he’s firmly established as one of those rare producers who values quality over quantity, preferring to make five amazing records in a year then twenty average ones, and even happily refusing to release a track if it doesn’t feel “just right”, to the occasional frustration of his fans. It’s this uncompromising attitude, that drive for something unattainably perfect, that has made him one of the most sought-after producers and remixers on the planet.,But if there’s one place where he’s even more at home than in his studio, it’s behind the decks, where he’s morphed into the consummate superstar DJ, unequivocally demolishing dancefloors the world over. From global superclubs like Zouk in Singapore and Guvernment in Toronto, to epic festivals like Global Gathering, Trance Energy and Dance Valley, to the mega-brands like Ministry of Sound and Godskitchen, the utterly unique, instantly recognisable Emery sound continues to pack out more clubs, in more places across the world, than ever before.,The rise of Gareth Emery to dance music’s Premier league has been untraditional in almost every sense, and looking at his career, one gets the feeling he almost likes being the underdog. In 2009, when he was advised against launching his Garuda club night in the midst of one of the harshest recessions in living memory, he went ahead regardless, going on to totally sell-out every Garuda party that year. He also chose the road less travelled in 2006, when he turned down numerous offers from established radio stations to instead experiment with a virtually unknown format known as podcasting. It was a gamble that paid off, as four years and 100 episodes later, The Gareth Emery Podcast is now one of the most popular and influential dance music downloads in the world, with Emery’s famously diverse track selection and charismatic broadcasting style resulting in TGEP being nominated for ‘Best Podcast’ at the Miami Winter Music Conference IDMA Awards three years running.,Having also eschewed the lure of corporate major labels since the beginning, (almost all of his singles have been released on his own imprints), he’s living proof that you can amass a truly global following with little more than the power of the internet and some outstanding music. With millions of viewers on YouTube and legions of fans on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace, he’s a modern artist in every sense of the word; one with his finger truly on the pulse of the globalised, digitised planet we now inhabit. He sums it up in a recent interview: “At the start, there was no helping hand: I had no record deal, no money, and no idea about how to make my way in the music business. Basically I was just a kid from Southampton, who was making half-decent music on some very cheap equipment, and told people to check it out. The rest just sort of happened”. Inspirational stuff for talented kids everywhere.,With a list of achievements already far surpassing most DJs ten years his senior, Gareth Emery could easily sit back and be content with his lot, but you get the feeling that won’t be happening. After seeing his Garuda brand become the hottest label and club night launch in recent years (the quantity of Garuda t-shirts you now see at Emery gigs is testament to that), his plans for the next year are firmly rooted in the studio, where he’s determined to finally finish his long-anticipated artist album. “2009 was really all about Garuda. I started the year without a real home for my music, and now I’ve got one – as well as our Manchester residency which really was the surprise success of the year. But whilst Garuda has some amazing releases and nights lined up for 2010, for me, the next year’s all about finishing my album. I’ve been promising it since 2006, and whilst making a LP is undoubtably challenging when you spend half of your life abroad touring, I’m determined to put everything aside to finally nail it this year”.,At just 29, Gareth Emery’s well on the way to conquering the electronic music world, and if he finally cracks that artist album, he might just do it. Whatever happens though, 2010’s set to be a big one, as the worldwide Garuda massive eagerly await to see what’s coming next from this uniquely talented artist. We can’t wait – see you on the dancefloor.

  • IDA ENGBERG

27-year-old Ida Engberg started DJing hip hop and soul aged 14 after a boyfriend showed her how to mix, but she says “I had absolutely no plans on becoming a DJ, I just saw it as a new way to listen to and interact with music and I loved it!” But fate had other plans – while at a friend’s bar aged 18 his regular DJ called in sick. Ida talked her way onto the decks on the proviso that if it wasn’t working after half an hour she’d get off again – by the time she’d finished playing she’d secured her first weekly residence. “I was probably a terrible DJ” she says modestly, “but he loved the music so he booked me every Friday. At this time I was playing lounge music, ambient and soulful house.”,Ida honed her mixing skills and bagged her second residency through more fortuitous timing – working as a host at a big nightclub, Spy Bar, she stepped in for the errant resident DJ who’d had a skinful and promptly disappeared, leaving the dancefloor in silence. The owner immediately changed her job description to DJ, and put her in the main room, kicking off her DJ career proper. “I guess it was there it really started” says Ida. “I was playing house, tribal and electro and I really loved every second of it! I kept my residency there for two and a half years until I decided I wanted to spread my wings a bit.”,A move to Marbella brought 8 months of club gigs, followed by a season in Ibiza which inspired Ida musically like no other place. “I had fallen deeply in love with the minimal techno sound so it was perfect at the time. In Ibiza I met so many people who shared the same dream- To be working with music.” “I was playing in bars and smaller clubs and in afterhour parties. Everywhere I went it was people with the same passion for music as I had.” At the end of the season, Ida returned to Stockholm landing a top residency at Cocktail Club, the best underground club in Stockholm. “My first gig was a warm up for Eric Prydz and after that I did warm ups for everyone from Damian Lazarus, Mandy, Anja Schneider and Jennifer Cardini to Roger Sanchez and Steve Angello. “Stockholm is a great platform for electronic music. There are so many great producers and DJs living here and people really support each other.”,Although DJing is her first love, it was only a matter of time before Ida tried her hand at production. Her first effort was the massive Disco Volante – signed by John Dahlbäck to his Pickadoll label and released in 2007 with a Sebastien Leger remix it became a huge hit all over the world, featuring on compilations from Ministry of Sound, Defected in the House and Pacha Ibiza. It charted across the whole of Europe, doing especially well in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Two more tracks have followed on Get Physical and Pickadoll plus a remix for Dada Life, and Ida signed with the Plantage13 agency for international gigs. She can be found playing her brand of minimal, techno and tech house in clubs all over the world every weekend, and her love of what she does is obvious to all. Playing unplanned sets allows her to respond to the crowd, and she’s rocked parties and clubs like Miami’s Sunday School for Degenerates, Yes at Watergate in Berlin, Tomorrowland in Belgium, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Catwalk in Rotterdam and Op Art in Portugal to name a few. Lately she also took part in the Drumcode parties with Swedish companion Adam Beyer. “It’s still a musical journey, my style develops all the time and I’m always open to new impressions” says Ida. “That’s what makes it the best job in the world!”

  • James Hype

James Hype has proven himself to be arguably one of the UKs most important artists with his bootlegs and remixes consistently forming the cornerstone of UK and international dancefloors, alongside his singles regularly clocking tens of millions of streams. He has also been able to set the bar of what is humanly possible as a DJ in dance music, serving as a product ambassador for Pioneer DJ. Growing up in Liverpool in the North of England, James Hype took to DJing at the age of 15, and by 16 had taken to DJing house parties and birthdays for his friends. James reflects that he was “fascinated by grime instrumentals” at the time, listening to BBC 1Xtra and watching music videos showing the DJs using the decks, and committed to learning to emulate what he was watching. After cutting his teeth in the local club circuit and spending every spare hour sharpening his now signature skills, James Hype found the need for upbeat, club-ready remixes of usually slower records compelling. This led him to create his own edits of tracks which were prolific in the charts but needed an extra dose of energy to suit the dancefloors he was playing to. This then expanded his name from resident DJ to in-demand touring DJ. Using online platforms such as DJCity and Soundcloud, James continued to gain notoriety and with the exponential success of his remix of Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’, James had exploded onto the national scene with keen eyes anticipating original material to come.

  • KASKADE

“Kaskades signature sound is as unmistakable as it is beautiful; a combination of dewy female vocals, tough electronic underpinnings, and memorable melodies.” — Billboard,The New York Times may have called him the “new face of electronic dance music” in a recent profile, but Ryan Raddon, known as Kaskade, has been in the trenches of the EDM scene as an original recording artist and in-demand DJ for more than a decade. He has released seven studio albums, including his latest, Fire & Ice, scored nine Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay Chart, created chart-topping remixes for everyone from Lady Gaga to Beyoncé, appeared at all the major summer festivals, and has performed between 150 and 200 headlining shows a year for the last 10 years, building a name for himself as an innovator of the EDM scene as we know it today, which has opened doors for the likes of Deadmau5, Tiesto, Skrillex and more. In doing so, he has helped to lay the groundwork for a titanic musical and cultural shift: a post-rock EDM revolution that has captured the imagination of a new generation of music lovers across North America,Kaskade has been named America’s No. 1 DJ by DJ Times and Pioneer DJ. In 2012, he will appear at this year’s Coachella, for which he has a special performance planned, and will hit the road in May for his biggest headlining tour ever — 50-plus North American shows in just over three months. His own live show is a jaw-dropping spectacle that finds him performing in front of an 80-foot wide, three-stories tall LED screen that blares images synched with the music while strobe Lights scan the crowd. Kaskade’s belief in the transformative power of dance music to uplift thousands of people at once has had a significant effect on the U.S. scene. His ground-breaking double residency in Las Vegas at the Encore Beach Club (which had not even been built when he signed on) and Marquee has elevated the city’s status as a premiere club-going destination on par with London, Berlin, and Ibiza, is another testament to his influence.,Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Raddon was heavily influenced by New Wave bands like The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, and The Smiths that ignited his love for melody and lyrics and was strongly impacted by the house music scene that developed in Chicago. Following stints spinning throughout college and in A&R at OM Records, he began working on his own music, which includes multiple singles, EPs, and remixes, as well as the albums: his most recent 2011 release Fire & Ice – which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Chart, No. 3 on the Independent Albums chart, and No. 17 on the Top 200 Albums chart, while the iTunes version debuted at No. 4 on the overall album chart. The Fire disc contains ten original songs geared firmly toward the dancefloor, while on the Ice disc, Kaskade delivers the perfect down-tempo post-club experience by remixing all ten songs. Both discs showcase the musical versatility tat has characterized his work ever since he began writing his own songs. This album was preceded by It’s You, It’s Me (2003), In the Moment (2004), The Calm (2006), Here & Now (2006), Love Mysterious (2006), Strobelite Seduction (2008), Dynasty (2010) and Dance.Love (2010).

  • Kaytranada

Born in Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, Canadian artist Kaytranada has experienced an explosive rise in the past couple of years with his irresistible... production and live sets, but the hard work and success did not happen over night. Before touring the globe and amassing millions of hits online with his series of beloved tracks and mixes, the young man came up as a true disciple, absorbing hip hop and RnB culture since his childhood and finding ways to make the music his own. Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and the following year when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. As he explains, “after he showed me the basics, from that day on I couldn’t stop making beats,” pumping out a beat a day for the next couple of years and soon after self-releasing a series of EPs and beat tapes that quickly began to expand his reach. Official releases on HW&W and Jakarta Records soon spread his name like wildfire and some instant-classic remixes by the likes of Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, TLC, Danny Brown and others have cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing of the drums comparable to Dilla’s, a signature soulful touch in the melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines. In the past year, he was approached by Brodinski to drop the single “Free Things In Life” on the hotly-tipped French label Bromance, has headlined tours in Europe, Australia and North America, and released his newest single and video “At All” which has already conquered dance floors worldwide and introduced his face to the world with an unforgettable video. Now, as he continues to bridge the gap between the dance world and hip hop/RnB, he is prepping a solo album for 2015 and a series of high profile collaborations that will confirm his position as one of the most important producers in today’s musical landscape. • Kevin Saunderson

His influence runs deep, through both adopted hometown of Detroit, and music culture as a whole: as one of the Belleville Three, the high school trio which also includes Juan Atkins and Derrick May, he irreparably changed the face of electronic music; with Inner City, he gave it some of its most memorable tunes. Saunderson’s comparatively late start as a producer – kicking off in ’87 under the moniker of Kreem, with E-Dancer and Reese two of the more well-known names to follow – inadvertently gifted him a headstart. With the eruption of house music a few hours down the I-94 in Chicago, Saunderson married Detroit’s raw sound to more tactile, pop-leaning sensibilities. Inner City was born, and global success followed.

  • Lane 8

Daniel Goldstein is Lane 8. The California born producer/DJ is building a strong army of fans for his melodic, emotional house sound. What sets Daniel apart from the crowded dance music scene is his ability to craft music that succeeds both in the club and on the iPod – a skill that has landed him an unusually wide range of DJ support. When you consider that everyone from The Magician to ODESZA, from Above & Beyond to Annie Mac have heavily supported his music, you can see why he was named one of the “top 25 trail-blazing producers” by inthemix.com. His first string of releases with Anjunadeep, including “Diamonds,” “Be Mine”, “The One / Nothing You Can Say” and “Every Night," repeatedly topped the Hype Machine charts and garnered BBC Radio 1 support from Pete Tong, B. Traits, Annie Mac and Zane Lowe. Daniel is the only guest artist to ever release music on cult label French Express, while official remixes for Above & Beyond, Eric Prydz, ODESZA, Maribou State, and Icarus have shown his knack for appealing to both mainstream and indie audiences, in addition to his deep house base. ‘Rise,’ Daniel’s debut artist album, was released via Anjunadeep last year to cult and critical acclaim. An emotional 10-track journey across beautiful melodic instrumentals, leftfield pop moments and quirky electronica, the confident ‘Rise’ represented a bold, bright coming of age for Lane 8. The New York Times, SPIN, Billboard, and VICE’s Noisey all premiered tracks from the album. With regard to the release of ‘Rise’, DJ Mag stated Lane 8 has “created a lane all to himself, free of comparison and full of resilient independence.” After yet another Hype Machine #1 track with his stirring remix of Maribou State’s “Wallflower”, Daniel released his ‘Midnight EP’ in January of 2016 on Coyu’s esteemed tastemaker record label, Suara. The 3-track EP reached the top spot on Beatport’s Deep House release chart, further intensifying the momentum behind the Lane 8 name. Most recently, Daniel has introduced a new label and events concept called ‘This Never Happened’, removing the distractions of phones and photos and encouraging fans to experience the music and moment in its purest form.

Quelza, counts as one of the most satisfyingly mature young guns to emerge out the new wave of techno artists that’s been unfurling in recent times, with an exquisitely panoramic view into his mental multiverse. Championing layered techno wares laced with a breaksy, IDM-informed touch that packs a punch, the Frenchman keeps on carving out a truly distinctive, shape-shifting signature, switching scopes and angles as he ups the rhythmic pressure with every next sequence.

Working a symbiotic balance between his day job behind the steering wheel of Amsterdam-based webshop and distributor One Eye Witness and his seafood-luvin'label Kalahari Oyster Cult, when the night clocks in, Brussels native Rey Colino has long proven his dedication and talent when it comes to ubiquitous on and off-stage dancefloor busting operations. Thrusting his arrows smack dab the intersection of '90s grown ambient techno, sun-bleached house, further hybrid bassy riddims, and acid-infused electronics, Colino casts his net far and wide to paint amply textured, straight-out groovy narratives that, in addition to syncing up the dancers together through elaborate selections and surgical DJ swagger, sure know how to buildup the highest levels of energy and harness the ensuing storm with ever consistent style and panache.

  • Ricardo Villalobos

As far back as the early '90s, Ricardo Villalobos began building an impressive discography of 12" releases on respected dance labels like Playhouse and Perlon, and around the turn of the decade he was one of the most revered producers and DJs in dance music. In his youth, the Chilean-born Villalobos moved with his family to Germany in order to avoid the military dictatorship of Pinochet, and he eventually fell in with the country's fertile house community. A minimalist at heart, he trotted the globe to study percussion in order to apply his knowledge to his productions, which almost always sound remarkably expansive despite their simplicity. In addition to his own solo material, he has recorded with fellow expatriate Dandy Jack as Ric y Martin and with Luciano as Sense Club; additionally, he has taken part in Markus Nikolai's Hombre Ojo project. ~ AllMusic

So good he is known only by his first name, Serge is the man responsible for large swathes of the best electronic music out there thanks to his Clone empire. A store in Rotterdam as well as a whole network of labels, he A&Rs everything from classic house to banging basement tracks to seminal electro from the most respected names in the scene. Spinning records in the Lowlands since the late 80s, Clone bossman Serge comes at this game from the point of view of a DJ, rather than producer. When he started out, it was the norm for residents to play all evening in their clubs, spinning a wide array of music from any genre -just so long as it got people dancing- and it is those formative experiences which mark him out as the revered selector he is. If form is temporary and class is permanent, given Serge’s ongoing contribution to the worlds of house, Italo disco, electro and techno with Clone over the last 25 years, he is surely as classy as they come. Serge’s unquestionably keen ear has always kept Clone ahead of the curve, and the records he picks out to deploy in one of his learned, trend-defying DJ sets stand out, regardless of genre or style, and it is for that reason that this man is being picked up by a whole new generation.

Australian DJ and producer Sonny Fodera cut his teeth on straightforward house sounds before evolving to include elements of pop and other strains of electronic music. He merged four-on-the-floor bangers with EDM-flavored snare rolls and drops on his 2019 release Rise. Frequently FlyingBased out of Melbourne, Fodera began making music as a hip-hop producer in his teens, but his muse turned to house when he heard Derrick Carter's booming dance tracks. In his early twenties, Fodera was working as a DJ and making tracks of his own, debuting with the It's Time EP in 2013 on house maven Cajmere's Cajual Records label. Unrestrained by genre or tempo limitations he shifts gears between hypnotic slowmotion and breakneck 90’s rave so nimbly it induces an unexplained cerebral high. His sound has a rawness to it, shaped by years spent in the gabber scene and as a junglist in and around his terrestrial hometown Delft. Mainly inspired by the spirit of 90’s Techno and IDM, his contribution as a producer could be described as club focused but not merely functional. The dusty and stepping drum programming, often contrasting with the dense, atmospheric surrounding, is one of the peculiarities of his style, which in fact, references often to the Jungle or Hardcore era, but basically aims to evolve with no genre boundaries. As a Dj he maintains a similar, versatile and open minded approach, ranging between contemporary and classic but forward thinking club music.

Yellow Claw is a Dutch DJ and record production duo from Amsterdam consisting of Jim based in Bali and Nils based in Amsterdam. Their music incorporates elements from trap, hip hop, dubstep, hardstyle and moombahton. The Dutch duo have been steadily rising year on year as they continue to find success. They often don’t allow themselves to be confined in one box, floating between genres with ease and cementing their place across the electronic music industry. Yellow Claw seamlessly incorporate elements of hardstyle, hip-hop, trap, dubstep with moombahton — a fusion of house and reggaeton. Since 2014, they’ve run their own label, Barong Family, which has seen 600 releases over six years. Their latest album, 'Never Dies', continues their tried-and-tested formula. Bringing the likes of Tinashe, Fatman Scoop and Migos' Offset, the guest features helped elevate the project and further confirm their propensity to envision collaborations that many can't conceive. ~ DJMag

  • Young Marco

Amsterdam based DJ and producer that also runs his Safe Trip label. There was a time when Marco Sterk a.k.a. Young Marco’s talents as a DJ and producer were among Amsterdam’s best-kept secrets. For well over a decade, he plied his trade, largely unheralded, on the city’s underground dance music scene. It was here, via several now infamous residencies, that he learnt his craft, gaining a reputation for ballsy, genre-defying eclecticism, playing sets that joined the dots between everything from tropical rhythms, afro gems and quirky Middle Eastern disco, to lost proto-house, throbbing techno and industrial-strength jack-tracks. These days, the Dutchman’s talents are widely known around the World. His position as a crate digger, record collector and infamous party-starter now guarantees a packed schedule of gigs in Europe, North America and beyond. His passion for working a dancefloor with “strange music” and “unclassics” is renowned, and it’s this that makes his sets so special. This humid, off-kilter obsession with the inspired and unusual has become a hallmark of Marco’s music, too. Once a key part of the Rush Hour family – the legendary Amsterdam label releasing a number of his early singles – in 2011 he made his debut on Lovefingers’ highly regarded ESP Institute label. His first two EPs for the label set out his now-trademark style, and won support from the likes of Dixon and James Murphy, amongst others, along the way. It’s perhaps unsurprising that a string of remix requests followed, leading to now classic reworks for the likes of Heatsick, Joakim, Francis Bebey and Soft Rocks. His 2013 remix of Tony G’s “Dreams”, a killer chunk of blissful new age deep house, became one of the most in-demand and sought after records of that year. At the tail end of 2015, the best of these remixes were gathered together on Sorry For The Late Reply, the first release on Marco’s freshly minted Safe Trip imprint. 2014 saw the release of his most accomplished studio work to date, the superb debut album Biology on ESP Institute. Wonderfully picturesque, melodious, humid and glassy-eyed, it received rave reviews and confirmed his status as one of electronic music’s truly unique voices. The same year also saw the release of Clouds, a magical collaborative fulllength written and produced in a weekend with Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin and British artist Jonny Nash. Credited to Gaussian Curve and released by Amsterdam’s Music From Memory label, it was the unfeasibly beautiful sound of three like-minded musicians working towards a shared goal. In 2017, Marco is as busy as ever. He’ll be hitting the road April onwards with Gaussian Curve for a handful of live dates around the world in support of their second album The Distance, while his contribution to Dekmantel’s series of crate-digging compilations, Selectors, is due to hit in March. His own label – Safe Trip – will be picking up steam with a string of releases that explore electronic music in many different directions. As usual, you’ll also find him spreading his love of weird, wonderful and eccentric music in basements, warehouses and clubs the world over.

  • ZEDD

Anton Zaslavski, known professionally as Zedd, is a Russian-born German DJ, record producer and songwriter. Grammy-winning electronic producer Zedd is known for dynamic, electro-house tracks and a glitchy, pulsing production style. He first broke through in 2010 with a remix of Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" before parlaying that buzz into mainstream success with his 2012 album debut, Clarity. Buoyed by the single "Stay the Night" with Hayley Williams, Clarity reached the U.S. Top Ten and earned him a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. His sophomore album, True Colors, spawned the hit "I Want You to Know" with Selena Gomez and landed at number four (plus number one on the dance charts). Along with his own work, he has remained an in-demand producer, collaborating on tracks with a bevy of pop luminaries including Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Ariana Grande.
