  • Space Afrika

̸BIOGRAPHY Space Afrika With their slow-stepping, spacious urban dubscapes, Space Afrika harness ambient, Detroit techno and shades of early nineties Sheffield with a fresh and open approach to composition — this is dub techno stripped-down, sealed in a time capsule and sent back from the near future. Driving, echo-laden deep beats form the bed for a heavily subaquatic sound palette with undercurrents of cybernetic dread. Friends for almost 2 decades, the two Joshuas formed Space Afrika after years of listening to music together, sequestered by harsh Northern winters. Heavily inspired by the industrial architecture of Northwest England and notions of travel, their sonic framework evokes images of rust and disintegrating concrete, and sensations of movement and redemption — exuding a distorted analogue soul offering escape into their overcast skies. Closely associated with Brighton/London label, Where to Now?, who slink along a vintage axis of post-punk, On-U Sound, minimal and no wave influences, Space Afrika's diverse and creative radio shows (notably their residencies on NTS and Reform Radio) also display a breadth of curiosities in experimental and avant-garde music, old and new.

  • Ale Hop

̸BIOGRAPHY Ale Hop crafts complex pop arrangements with an experimental noise edge, utilizing electronic effects and computer software in order to mutate and reshape her instrument and voice. Her live performances merge the physical qualities of music with raw emotional states and unorthodox instrument procedures. She builds layers of sounds by blending a complex repertoire of guitar techniques processed by synthesis devices, to create a music of deep physical intensity. She began her career in the 2000s in Lima’s experimental and underground scene. In 2012, following several years of taking part in different pop and electronic bands, she finally started her solo project after performing alone for the first time in Boiler Room, during her residence at the Red Bull Music Academy New York. Ale Hop has performed, screened and exhibited work internationally at institutions and festivals, such as CTM Festival (2022), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (2021), New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (2021), Australia Independent Film Festival (2021), Stockholm City Film Festival (2021), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2020), Somerset House Studios (2019), Heroines of Sound (2019), MALBA Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (2015). ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Apophenia (Buh Records, 2019) Bodiless (Buh Records, 2018) PANGEA (Buh Records, 2015)

  • Avalon Emerson

Avalon Emerson is from the desert. While she currently lives in Berlin, the music she produces comes from the dreamlike expanse and abstract textures of the Sonoran landscapes of Arizona. Her journey has taken her from that sunbaked state to the contemporary dance music mecca via a long stint in San Francisco, where she cut her teeth as a DJ in the city's storied warehouse party scene. In her DJ sets and productions now, she offers a timeless narrative that reflects a passion for the sound design of new wave, the futurism of techno, the soul of American house and the exuberance of rave. Though she's built up steam in 2015 from multiple sets at Panorama Bar, and globetrotting all around Europe and North America, she's just getting started, and continues to outdo herself with original productions released on labels like Shtum, Spring Theory, Icee Hot, and her own DJ tool edit pool, the Cybernedits series.

As the top YouTube comment for their Joy Orbison collaboration track ‘Bromley’ put it, “so this is the track that was on every 5 minutes at Warehouse Project. ”That track and the duo’s own ‘Le Tigre’ were played out constantly by the likes of Four Tet and Ben UFO, the former also hiring the duo to remix his track ‘Teenage Birdsong’. Then there are their edits. Thom Yorke was so impressed by the duo’s versions of ‘Not The News’that he let them release the tracks on their own Polykicks label. Add to that their cheeky version of Rosalia –‘A Palé’,which caught the ear and the eye of the respected flamenco artist, as well as being a highlight of their live performances pre-lockdown. Then the world abruptly stopped, all their forthcoming gigs were cancelled and suddenly Overmono were able to fully commit their energy to their legendary Bromley studio. It’s was during this time that the duo feel they’ve been able to realise exactly what Overmono’s music should be. “Our work together had so far been about exploring and defining what Overmono is... and we feel like we’ve got this now”.

Mainly inspired by the spirit of 90’s Techno and IDM, his contribution as a producer could be described as club focused but not merely functional. The dusty and stepping drum programming, often contrasting with the dense, atmospheric surrounding, is one of the peculiarities of his style, which in fact, references often to the Jungle or Hardcore era, but basically aims to evolve with no genre boundaries. • TAYHANA

̸BIOGRAPHY CDMX-based DJ & producer. Argentinian DJ and producer, Tayhana, has established herself, in a short period of time, as one of the most relevant and promising figures in the club scene around the world. Self-taught by her experience as a founder of one of the most radical parties in South America that revalued the original music of the continent, she is recognized as a central figure in the Club Latinx genre. Thanks to her aggressive way of playing, a fearless imagination mixing different rhythms, BPMs and a wide range of experimental sounds from Latin America, but mostly because of her creative capacity as a producer and a beatmaker to push the boundaries of what has been possible in the encounter of urban and traditional music from all over the continent, she has called the attention of artists such as Rosalía, Daniela Lalita, Mare Advertencia Lírica, Gaika, among many others producers and well known DJs in the industry. Currently based in México, she has been part of the record label N.A.A.F.I, with whom she released her first albúm “Tierra del Fuego”, with great acceptance and broad recognition by the specialized media in the electronic music scene. The impact of this singular approach to club music gave her the chance to be booked in extensive tours around Europe, Asia and all over Latin America. Over the last few years she has played in a wide range of the most relevant festivals that embrace club culture such as Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza (ARG), Mutek (USA), Unsound (POL), Festival Estereo Picnic (CO), Festival Ceremonia (MX), SXSW (TX) and also institutions like MoMA Ps1 (NY-USA) among many others. Recently, Tayhana’s work as a music producer and a beatmaker, has been selected and recognized in large scale productions by artists such as GAIKA and ROSALÍA, for whom she produce the beat “CUUUUUuuute” for her world acclaimed latest album “Motomami”, being the only female producer involved on the record that would win ‘Best Alternative Album’ at the GRAMMY Awards and ‘Album of the Year’ at the LATIN GRAMMYS Awards. But also, she has been invited as a producer in the original soundtrack of WAKANDA FOREVER, one of the latest blockbuster movies of MARVEL, next to the artist Foudeqush with the song “Con la brisa”. In the past decade, the relevance of her work has not only inspire the multiplication and emergence of differents clubs centered in electronic music from Latin America, but also a broad number of producers and djs, specially females, opening a new kind of recognition to the beautiful complexity of the sound of Latinx culture.

  • Tiga

How does one begin to write about Tiga? Where to even start on a long road marked with notable checkpoints? What can be told that can’t be tallied in raw statis...tics (which he’s a total stickler for), or an unfurled parchment scroll of places gone and plaudits won? The duality of a life split between aspirational popstar and touring deejay falls short: by this point in time he’s lived dozens of lives, let alone a mere two. Frankly the only claim that doesn’t wash is that of being in a legacy mode – because that, to him, denotes the cardinal sin of coasting. And that just won’t do. The core engine pushing Tiga forward is ambition. It’s there, everywhere: at the dials in any given club in any given city in any given country on any given weekend; burning the midnight oil in the Research & Development wing of his career control centre, crisp shirt sleeves rolled, assessing and strategising over his next move; with his feet up on the gleaming glass desk in the penthouse office of Turbo Towers, gold plaques of decade-dominating dancefloor delights flanking him – it’s there. Self-aware, well-moderated, yet totally unrepentant ambition. Plus a bit of wit, too. To be insulated from any real backlash over a quarter-century in the game and across many different hats worn, a touch of humility and humour certainly helps it all go down easy. His goal is to dunk on people with success, but do so in a friendly way, soaring overhead with the sly wink of chutzpah (but never the nudge-nudge of solipsistic irony for irony’s sakes). To maintain pole position while swerving between all these lanes with impunity, he taps into a well-spring of regenerating desire. From the getgo Tiga has sought to not merely play a part in the culture he abandoned all life commitments for age 17, but frequently scale its heights too: Attending Berlin’s Love Parade circa ’92-95, then hearing DJ Hell drop “Sunglasses At Night” to the masses not too many years later. Giving a speech at his Montreal alma mater, then converting some of the impressionable graduates in the audience to come work at Turbo. Starting an independent label on a whim, then reaching 200 releases in a stormy industry with a higher turnover rate than Real Madrid managers. Getting hooked first on the fearless compulsion of Bowie, Reznor and Almond, then the frigid cool of Mills, Hawtin and D. James, then threading the needle consummately between these two worlds. These highwatermarks form the backbone of his pride, and in turn, fuel the self-perpetuating motion machine inside. There’s always extra room in the cockpit, mind. An army of collaborators, remixers and remixees have provided vital thrust over the years. From Alter Ego and Azari & III through Duke Dumont and Depeche Mode; from Matthew Dear and Moby, through Zombie Nation and Zdar, Phillipe; Paranoid London, Pusha T, Pet Shop Boys and Peaches.…on and on it goes. Read between the lines and you’ll get a measure of the man. Teamwork affords stimulus, shuts down ego, and juices something he can’t get to alone. At heart, it brings out the best in Tiga. So it’ll prove in 2018, where the fingers of his well-combed Rolodex currently rest on entries marked Kolsch, The Martinez Brothers, and Hudson Mohawke. The fruits of this friendly jousting with find their way out of track ID requests and into the shops before long (perhaps even by the moment you read this – hope you’re enjoying the future and remembered to short your cryptocurrency in time). It would be a lot easier to rest on his laurels by this point, really. To trade on former glories, reflect fondly on a career spent dovetailing in and out of the spotlight with likeminded friends, turning in a jaded, half-assed representation of himself at festivals and recording sessions when the taxman comes knocking. But Tiga is still too confident, self-respecting, and – how did you guess? – ambi-tious for that. The challenge he seeks is to keep experiencing the frisson of creative alchemy, to lock into a groove where he is truly in the zone, to dig deep and reproduce a fresh take on that first-love feeling of music: something that connects with young ravers and inspires the same spark he felt all those years ago. That’s the spur, the lifeblood, the DNA. And that’s why Tiga remains an ever-present light in our little corner of the universe. See more

  • Vessel

̸BIOGRAPHY Electronic producer & composer Seb Gainsborough (Vessel) began his career as a purveyor of left-field, bass driven electronica, using his unique sonic palate to create immersive compositions, exploring texture and tone, the organic and the man-made. His first album, Order of Noise (Tri Angle Records 2012) saw him position himself as an artist at the vanguard of new British electronic music. 2014’s ‘Punish, Honey’ signalled a distinct departure from everything Vessel had previously released. Following two years of touring the output from ‘Order of Noise’ and his output from the ten years prior, Vessel approached ‘Punish, Honey’ differently, stepping aside from digital music tools in favour of analogue hardware and unique, hand-crafted instrumentation in order to develop an entirely unique sonic palette. Lead single, Red Sex picked up cult status, being used in Park Chan Wook’s The Handmaiden, on Alexander McQueen’s catwalks and as the soundtrack to a swathe of contemporary dance works whilst simultaneously destroying dank basement dancefloors around the world. Following ‘Punish, Honey’ Gainsborough’s focus shifted to a collaborative, exploratory approach, in particular, blurring the boundaries between live and synthesised sound. Gainsborough teamed up with Erased Tapes’ Immix Ensemble for his first foray into the ‘classical’ world, this resulted in a new commission for the re-launch of Tate Britain ‘Transition’, released on Erased Tapes in 2016. "At some point, I realised I had faded away from much of the music I used to identify with," Gainsborough told Dazed. "When I started getting deeply into classical and chamber music, I let out a big sigh of relief, like, finally. This is the language I've been looking for." This sparked a critical mass of new ideas and partnerships that would change Gainsborough’s music output forever. Gainsborough formed a close bond with Rakhi Singh, Immix’s violinist who opened his eyes to a lifetime of new listening. They began to write their first collaborative work not long after meeting. Written In Fire, a response to Janáček’s string quartet ‘Intimate Letters’ dropped in 2019, kicking off a rapid fire triptych alongside chamber opera ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Passion’, alongside acclaimed cellist Lucy Railton. If ‘Transition’ was Gainsborough dipping his toe into the water of the instrumental world, this was him diving in head first. All the while, alongside this exploration, collaboration and creative play, Gainsborough was simultaneously penning ‘Queen of Golden Dogs’, an album that would be his first true, cohesive amalgamation of his deep, nuanced electronic music and the new world of experimental and classical music that was unfolding before his eyes. Marrying ‘orchestral string stabs with propulsive percussion for a sound that is equal parts Arnold Schoenberg and Oneohtrix Point Never.’ Queen of Golden Dogs, was released (again by Tri Angle) in 2018. It marks a stark departure from the producer’s previous work, taking that next step on Gainsborough’s creative journey, combining chamber-rave freak outs with vocal segues and neo-classical pieces. In the live domain, the work is performed alongside acclaimed visual artist, and long time collaborator Pedro Maia, director of the masterpiece accompaniment to QOGD’s lead single Paplu. Maia creates a visual companion truly befitting of Gainsborough’s immersive, visceral, fluid musical output. Vessel, continues to be a truly singular voice, whatever his next move is, it’s likely to be unlike anything you’ll have ever heard before. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Nylon Sunset EP - 2011 (Left Blank) Standard EP - 2012 (Left Blank) Order of Noise - 2012 (Tri Angle) Misery Is A Communicable Disease - 2013 (Liberation Technologies) Punish, Honey - 2014 (Tri Angle) Transition (with Immix Ensemble) - 2016 (Erased Tapes) Queen of Golden Dogs - 2018 (Tri Angle)

̸BIOGRAPHY ZULI is a Musician/Producer/DJ from Cairo, Egypt Ahmed El Ghazoly aka ZULI (stylized in all capitals), is a musician, producer, and sound artist from Cairo, Egypt. Internationally, ZULI is best known for his releases on Lee Gamble’s UIQ – which included a string of EPs as well as his debut LP Terminal, an album that highlighted the depth in his productions, as he simultaneously combines experimentations in rap/hip-hop with music for listening as well as the dancefloor. The Italian Haunter Records also saw the release of the infamous Trigger Finger EP which went on to be remixed by the likes of TSVI, AYA, Acre and more. In 2019, ZULI launched a video series ‘irsh’ together with Rama where they curated and invited artists to play video recorded sets in a social setting. Only having the chance to record two episodes before the pandemic struck, they launched a label and released the two compilations. Locally in Cairo, ZULI is best known for his work in the Hip-hop scene, particularly with rapper Abyusif (who appeared on ZULI’s 2018 album ‘Terminal') but also in the Electronic music scene as part of the now defunct collective Kairo Ist Koming (KIK) between 2012-2015. It’s there he founded Cairo’s alternative music venue and club, VENT, together with Asem Tag aka ($$$TAG$$$), which existed between 2013-2015 before transforming their project into a namesake club night and festival. Around the same time, VENT London was established at the now closed Dance Tunnel venue by a third partner, Mohamed Elshourbagui. ZULI’s music garners support all over the board ranging from the likes of Aphex Twin and Autechre, to Ben UFO and Bradley Zero, even Richie Hawtin through its wide ranging sound. He joined the NTS Radio roster in 2016 with a monthly show that includes a dedicated hour to guest appearances from up and coming DJs and ones he meets touring around the world. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Trigger Finger EP - SPCTR010 - May 2018 Terminal LP - UIQLP003 - November 2018 All Caps EP - UIQ0012 - March 2021
