  • DARUDE

Multi-platinum award winning producer and international artist Darude, has to date sold over 5 million records worldwide and is recognised by many as one of the most influential artists to emerge from the dance scene in the past decade.,Hailing from a small village called Hinnerjoki in Finland the patriotic Finn now resides with his family in his second home Atlanta (America), a move that compliments his ever growing popularity in the US. A seasoned professional in his own right, through travelling the globe he has been fortunate to experience many cultures and see some of the worlds most beautiful and awe-inspiring destinations; believing this education of life has been a catalyst for much of his recent music.,Although famed for the global smash ‘Sandstorm’, which became the world’s best selling 12" vinyl of 2000, Ville Virtanen aka Darude has had a long and successful career as both a live performer and club DJ, banking an average of 140, 000 air miles per year. Alongside 10 years working as a producer and engineer with nothing but achievement to look back on.,Having released numerous chart topping hits, three artist albums and through his remix work he has brought singles such as ATB feat. York – ‘The Fields of Love and The Thrillseekers – ’Synaesthesia to a mainstream audience, gaining him undiminished support from industry leaders such as Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Ferry Corsten and Paul Oakenfold.,Whether in his studio in America or Finland, recent times have seen him cement further his reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting figures in modern dance music. With his distinctive styles of progressive and uplifting trance, his music continues to get talked about by both music fans and critics alike with recent support coming from DJ Magazine and Billboard magazine to name but two.,Constantly ahead of the game, Darude was one of the first DJs to embrace MP3’s when he released ‘Sandstorm’ in late 1999, and also released several tracks to data zip drives in early 2000.,Although having set the benchmark for a generation of producers with ‘Sandstorm’, the ever modest professional is a strong supporter of new talent and music. So much so that he recently took the decision to set up his own imprint to push not just his own music, but also that of artists whom he believes in. With a long list of achievements already to his name, Darude could be forgiven for resting on his lot, but instead 2010 will see him busy as ever by encompassing a staggering amount of new projects, including a mix album project (in planning), several new singles and remixes, as well as his new record label and a world tour.

  • GARETH EMERY

To say Gareth Emery has had a good year would be a vast understatement. Over the past twelve months, the popularity and buzz surrounding the young Brit reached explosive proportions, culminating in him being voted no.9 in 2009’s definitive DJ Mag Top 100 poll: one of only a handful of DJs to crack the world’s top ten before the age of 30.,Was this down to producing pure club anthems like Exposure and Metropolis alongside stunning remixes for Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond, all of which led to him spending more time at the top of Beatport’s trance chart than any other artist in ‘09? Maybe it was the launch of his new Garuda label and club night, responsible for selling out Manchesters iconic Sankeys club four times in a row whilst releasing his critically acclaimed compilation ‘The Sound Of Garuda’. Or perhaps it was the sheer amount of people he played to, banking half a million air miles travelling to over one hundred gigs at some of the world’s finest clubs and festivals. Whatever the reason, one thing is for certain: he’s on fire like never before.,Of course, what seems like ‘overnight’ success is usually the result of years of hard work, and Gareth Emery is no exception. He started learning the piano at 4, and whilst he’d completed his classical music training before he’d finished school, his real interest lay elsewhere, initially in guitar-based sounds. This was the UK in the mid-90s with Britpop and indie the order of the day, although as one might expect, Emery was no slouch, following the footsteps of Green Day and Oasis by headlining Southampton’s legendary Joiners venue at the age of just 15 with his band at the time. But it was a chance trip to Ibiza in 1998 that opened his eyes to the appeal of dance music, and after spending the next three years learning to make music with computers and midi, rather than guitars and pianos, he wrote his first electronic classic: the seminal ‘Mistral’, famously made whilst on holiday in France on a £500 laptop. Plenty more were to come.,These days, his records (which are composed, produced, and engineered entirely by him), span the worlds of trance, progressive, electro, techno, and a few other places. Languid, spacey grooves, juddering basslines and original melodies that take your breath away mean that it’s a given that Armin, Tiesto, Oakenfold, and Judge Jules have all been fully paid-up members of the Emery fan club for years. But more importantly, he’s firmly established as one of those rare producers who values quality over quantity, preferring to make five amazing records in a year then twenty average ones, and even happily refusing to release a track if it doesn’t feel “just right”, to the occasional frustration of his fans. It’s this uncompromising attitude, that drive for something unattainably perfect, that has made him one of the most sought-after producers and remixers on the planet.,But if there’s one place where he’s even more at home than in his studio, it’s behind the decks, where he’s morphed into the consummate superstar DJ, unequivocally demolishing dancefloors the world over. From global superclubs like Zouk in Singapore and Guvernment in Toronto, to epic festivals like Global Gathering, Trance Energy and Dance Valley, to the mega-brands like Ministry of Sound and Godskitchen, the utterly unique, instantly recognisable Emery sound continues to pack out more clubs, in more places across the world, than ever before.,The rise of Gareth Emery to dance music’s Premier league has been untraditional in almost every sense, and looking at his career, one gets the feeling he almost likes being the underdog. In 2009, when he was advised against launching his Garuda club night in the midst of one of the harshest recessions in living memory, he went ahead regardless, going on to totally sell-out every Garuda party that year. He also chose the road less travelled in 2006, when he turned down numerous offers from established radio stations to instead experiment with a virtually unknown format known as podcasting. It was a gamble that paid off, as four years and 100 episodes later, The Gareth Emery Podcast is now one of the most popular and influential dance music downloads in the world, with Emery’s famously diverse track selection and charismatic broadcasting style resulting in TGEP being nominated for ‘Best Podcast’ at the Miami Winter Music Conference IDMA Awards three years running.,Having also eschewed the lure of corporate major labels since the beginning, (almost all of his singles have been released on his own imprints), he’s living proof that you can amass a truly global following with little more than the power of the internet and some outstanding music. With millions of viewers on YouTube and legions of fans on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace, he’s a modern artist in every sense of the word; one with his finger truly on the pulse of the globalised, digitised planet we now inhabit. He sums it up in a recent interview: “At the start, there was no helping hand: I had no record deal, no money, and no idea about how to make my way in the music business. Basically I was just a kid from Southampton, who was making half-decent music on some very cheap equipment, and told people to check it out. The rest just sort of happened”. Inspirational stuff for talented kids everywhere.,With a list of achievements already far surpassing most DJs ten years his senior, Gareth Emery could easily sit back and be content with his lot, but you get the feeling that won’t be happening. After seeing his Garuda brand become the hottest label and club night launch in recent years (the quantity of Garuda t-shirts you now see at Emery gigs is testament to that), his plans for the next year are firmly rooted in the studio, where he’s determined to finally finish his long-anticipated artist album. “2009 was really all about Garuda. I started the year without a real home for my music, and now I’ve got one – as well as our Manchester residency which really was the surprise success of the year. But whilst Garuda has some amazing releases and nights lined up for 2010, for me, the next year’s all about finishing my album. I’ve been promising it since 2006, and whilst making a LP is undoubtably challenging when you spend half of your life abroad touring, I’m determined to put everything aside to finally nail it this year”.,At just 29, Gareth Emery’s well on the way to conquering the electronic music world, and if he finally cracks that artist album, he might just do it. Whatever happens though, 2010’s set to be a big one, as the worldwide Garuda massive eagerly await to see what’s coming next from this uniquely talented artist. We can’t wait – see you on the dancefloor.

  • INFECTED MUSHROOM

Infected Mushroom – Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani (aka Duvdev) – has been the leading group within the global psy-trance scene for nearly a decade. Incorporating pumping, bad-ass grooves and infectious melodies and live instruments and vocals into their songs, they’ve performed live – a feat that many of their DJ peers aspire to accomplish – for well over a million people around the globe.,The band’s energetic live show has triumphed at some of the world’s biggest and most important music festivals (OMIX Festival in Mexico, Miami’s Ultra Festival, Tribe in Sao Paulo, among countless others), and they continue to regularly sell-out top clubs such as the Brixton Academy in London, Toronto’s Koolhaus at the Government, and Avalon in New York and Los Angeles. Their success as an electronic music band on the global concert circuit has translated into record sales in excess of 150,000 albums over the course of six acclaimed independent albums. Not bad for two guys from Haifa who started producing music mostly to escape boredom.,“We met in 1996 through a DJ friend,” recalls Erez. “Duvdev was in Goa at the time, and I was working on another project with a German guy. We met and tried to do one track together, and we’ve continued on since then.”,A year later, Erez and Duvdev started buying equipment and began to take Infected Mushroom – a name they stole from a disbanded local punk band – seriously. Finding little influence in Israel’s music scene, they drew inspiration from bands like Metallica and The Prodigy. Early productions led to club dates and gigs at local parties. Before long, the twosome had developed quite a loyal following. While the headlines were filled with news about violence and bloodshed, Infected Mushroom’s music touched the hearts of the burgeoning Israeli trance scene, and clubbers began looking to the band’s music for a respite from the tumultuous political situation.,“People were dying and the government saw that dealing with that as more important than abolishing trance parties,” says Erez. “And now the government is supporting trance parties. They want people to party, instead of staying home. There are places in the United States that you cannot go to because it is too dangerous because there are crazy people living there. It’s the same thing in Israel.”,Brandishing a multi-influenced trance sound that hadn’t been heard before, Erez and Duvdev were turned down by nearly every record label in Israel when they attempted to get a deal. “Nobody wanted to sign us,” recalls Erez. “We went to the biggest and smallest labels in Israel, and nobody was interested. At the time, we really believed in our music and continued looking for people to sign us. Fortunately, there was this A&R guy from BNE named Avi Youssef [and BNE’s owner, Avi Brand] who gave us a chance.”,In 1998, BNE released Infected Mushroom’s debut album, The Gathering. Inspired by the surreal ambient styles of Simon Posford, X-Dream and Transwave, it took a few months for the forward-thinking album to catch on. But once it did, the buzz within the global psy-trance scene became deafening.,The group’s second album, Classical Mushroom, was released in 2000. “This album was totally different that the first album,” says Duvdev, who, like Erez, is a classically trained musician. “Not only did we expand our style, but the album was big in Europe and Japan. It sounded totally different that the other trance music that was happening at the time.”,“The trance scene at the time was really monotonic as opposed to melodic with chords,” adds Erez. “We put a lot of classical elements into that album; it sounded different, and that’s why it stood out. At the beginning, nobody believed in that one as well.”,Infected Mushroom’s third album, B.P. Empire, followed in 2001. The combination of their live show and diverse electronic palette eventually won them the support of critics and a new legion of hardcore fans in North and South America. In 2003, Infected Mushroom issued their sprawling double-disc album, Converting Vegetarians. Perhaps one of their most ambitious recordings to date, Converting Vegetarians was a sonic departure away from trance. Leading the listener through trance, freestyle and ambient sounds, the album paved the way for 2004’s I’m The Supervisor.,“After we made the chilled-out non-danceable side to Converting Vegetarians, we wanted to make something for the trance fans that was danceable and full-on,” says Duvdev of I’m The Supervisor. “This album is trance, except for the last track. There’s more singing, and it’s the most difficult thing we’ve done. Using the voice as an instrument is tough to do. We’re like every band in that we’re trying to search for something new with every album.”,Always one step of their audience, Infected Mushroom are constantly pushing themselves. With fame and success in their homeland and in the global electronic music community, Infected Mushroom threw caution to the wind and relocated to Los Angeles in January 2005. The purpose was to take themselves out of their comfort zone in order to take their music to the next level.,“The weather is a lot like Israel’s,” says Erez, “and we still don’t know the city very well. But we’re here and we’re looking to push ourselves and do the sort of things that we couldn’t do in Israel.”,As they work in their adopted surroundings and continue to tour the world, Erez and Duvdev have added famed Israeli guitarist Erez Netz and Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Jardim to select live shows. They’re also busy finishing material for their seventh album, Vicious DeLicious, which contains a myriad of new musical explorations, from Flamenco guitar, to hip hop, to thrash-metal undertones. They have even been commissioned to remix recordings of rock legends, The Doors. But today they are especially proud to be recognized by their fans – Infected Mushroom was named #12 in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ list, a 14 place jump from their debut on the list last year.,While they see themselves more as an electronic band rather than a psy-trance outfit these days, their track record of producing everything from trance to downtempo makes them feel that they can realize all of their musical aspirations.,“Being in the studio is like playing a PlayStation game, where you have to pass a level each time,” says Duvdev. “That’s our goal every time we do a session. The energy that you get at the parties makes you want to go right back into the studio and create new tracks. You need to be in the studio and do the shows; they’re both connected to each other. Our mission now is the same as when we started out, and that’s to get Infected Mushroom’s music out to more people.”

  • SOLARSTONE

From scene founding father to, of-late, initiator and flag-bearer for the Pure Trance movement, Solarstones enduring influence spans the near length of the genre’s history. Having championed the true nature of trance music from his very first release, the last 24 months have seen Solarstone drive its sound, almost singlehandedly, back up to the top of the genre’s agenda. Through his #PureTrance gospel – modernizing the genre’s heart, whilst maintaining its soul – he captured the mood of the scene with zeitgeist timing. Solarstone’s Pure Trance concept has subsequently spun off into a mix-comp series, Pure Trance shows worldwide (including electronic music capitals like Miami, Ibiza & Amsterdam) and most recently the Pure Trance Recordings label.,Solarstone has long brought his sound to some of the most famous clubs, arenas and festivals on the planet. Most recently those have included Global Gathering, Cream Ibiza, A State Of Trance and Tomorrowland in Europe, whilst further afield he’s rocked TomorrowWorld, Stereosonic, FSOE & numerous others. With ‘RainStarsEternal’, ‘Touchstone’ and most recently ‘Pure’, he’s released a trilogy of critically acclaimed artist albums, whilst releases from Solarstone’s manifold label projects (Touchstone Recordings and Molecule among them) continue to provide the foundation blocks of his inimitable sets. Solaris International – his weekly radio show – enjoys a die-hard fan-base and is now broadcast across some 50 + FM & Internet stations. In October of 2013, off the back of the Pure Trance wave, Solarstone re-entered DJ Mag’s list of the planet’s Top 100 DJs.,Solarstone – The Music: Solarstone’s musical history though stretches back almost as far as the genre itself, with tracks like ‘Solarcoaster’, ‘The Calling’ and ‘Seven Cities’ all hallmark anthems of its pre-millennial period. The latter track – among the first of the Balearic Trance anthems – has been re-released 3 times and has sold in excess of ½ million copies. Remixed in 2002 by Armin Van Buuren, its instantly recognizable sunset/sunrise-sound legacy is still heard in tracks today.,In 2012 Solarstone released the ‘Pure’ album. A reaction to the fragmentation of the trance sound, Solarstone used the album as a means to clarify his position in the genre. Thus far it has spawned five singles, ‘The Spell’ (“a revelation” – EDM Magazine), ‘Fireisland’ (with Aly & Fila), ‘Lovers’, its title track and ‘Falcons’ with Giuseppe Ottaviani (Tune of the Month! – MIXMAG). ‘Pure’ became the natal point for the Pure Trance movement.,Prior to that in 2008, Solarstone put out ‘RainStarsEternal’ – an album described by DJ Mag as: “a consummate all-rounder”. It generated six singles including ‘4ever’ and ‘Late Summer Fields’ (which Richard also sang and wrote lyrics for). ‘Touchstone’, the follow up, was a concerted effort by Richard to chart the inspirations that made up Solarstone’s musical psyche. Press and fans embraced its concept, with Tilllate Magazine branding the album both “fantastic” and “beautifully produced” and MIXMAG labelling its title track “the summer of ‘99 recalibrated and refined for 2010”.,Mix-Comps: Solarstone is best known as the helmsman for two on-going, highly successful mix-compilation projects. Now enjoying two outings, Solarstone Presents Pure Trance has seen him team up with Giuseppe Ottaviani and Orkidea to mix-define the sound of the movement. In October 2013 MIXMAG magazine said of the second release: “Vol.1 was a tough act to follow, but Solarstone Presents Pure Trance 2 is a huge step up”.,Born from his longstanding love of pop art, Electronic Architecture won immediate acclaim for its imaginative concept. It was hailed as “a magical blend of music, art and design” by Tilllate Magazine, a “genuine gem” by DJ Mag and in March 2010 was nominated for an IDMA award in the Best Full Length Mix category. A progressive-trance Yin to the ‘Pure Trance’ Yang, two years later Electronic Architecture² (Or Electronic Architecture Squared) was released to similarly high praise, with MIXMAG’s giving it an Album of the Month award and saying it “captured the essence of what we all love about trance”. Summer of 2014 will see the arrival of the third in the EA series.,Solarstone – The DJ: Solarstone behind a pair of CDJs is something that every electronic dance music lover, planet-wide, should witness at least once in their clubbing lifetimes. Worldwide his Pure Trance shows have captured the imagination of tens of thousands in electronic music hotspots like Miami, Ibiza & Amsterdam. Since learning to spin in the late Nineties, he’s played some of the most renowned names (inc. Global Gathering, Cream Ibiza, A State Of Trance, Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld, Stereosonic, FSOE & numerous others) and spun alongside the worlds best-known DJs many times over. Richard’s worldwide travels have also taken him to some of the biggest events and festivals across the globe, and also some of the most remote. Over the years these have included islands in the Philippines, bush parties in Australia and massive festivals in the heart of Brazil.,Solaris International – The Solarstone Show: Solaris International is Richard’s long-running, widely syndicated radio show platform. Its weekly hour-long format includes features like the Progressive and the Uplifting Selections, Not The Kind of Thing We Usually Play, the Big Tune and the Chill Out Moment. From its early cult following, over the last four years the show has developed into a tune-in essential for broad cross-section of the electronic dance community. Solaris International is broadcast across some 50+ FM & Internet stations to a listenership now in excess of 8 million, receiving its first airing on every Tuesday at 18:00 GMT/ 19:00 CET on Afterhours.FM. In the spring of 2014 Solaris International passed its 400th show milestone.,The Labels: In 2014 Solarstone’s cornerstone labels Touchstone Recordings and the more experimental Molecule became a trinity with the launch of Pure Trance Recordings. In partnership with esteemed Dutch music house Black Hole Recordings, it brought a label platform to the movement’s most gifted music makers. Previously he has owned, co-owned and A&Rd and many successful labels, including Solaris Recordings, Deepblue and Crashing Waves. At the start of 2009, Richard launched solarSwarm, an online community record label for die-hard Solarstone fans. In the summer of the same year his insatiable label morphed into solarSwarm Recordings. In a groundbreaking move solarSwarm became the world’s very first social network record label.,Solarstone – The Aliases: In order to showcase different musical perspectives & sounds, Richard has also recorded under a number of pseudonyms. In 2002 he initiated the 80’s-influenced Young Parisians outfit who scored substantial club hits with ‘U Write the Rules’ and ‘Jump the Next Train’. The natural successor to Young Parisians, 2012 saw him reteam with Ben Lost as Federation – a new band-based live act. Drawing on an even greater range of influences, from several decades, it was signed to Oakenfold’s Perfecto Flouro and has so far resulted in 4 Beatport top 10 charting singles.,Solarstone – The Remixes: Over the years Solarstone has always maintained a keen balance between original production tracks and remix works. Most recently he has worked on remixes of Armin van Buuren’s ‘Forever Is Ours’, Alex M.O.R.P.H.s ‘Eternal Flame’, John O Callaghan ft Ria – I’ll Follow and Delerium’s ‘Days Turn Into Nights’. He has also remixed for A-list names like Paul Oakenfold (‘Bullet in The Gun’), Ferry Corsten (on Moonman’s ‘Galaxia’ and ‘Gabriella’s Sky’) & BT’s ‘Calling Your Name’.,Quotes,What the Magazines say:,“Standby to receive your trance refined, clarified and 100% Pure!” – Tilllate Magazine,“Vol.1 was a tough act to follow, but ‘Solarstone Presents Pure Trance 2’ is a huge step up” MIXMAG magazine,“Pure’ celebrates the feeling you get when you hear a truly outstanding track” – Euphoric Magazine (India),“(‘The Spell’) is a revelation” – EDM Magazine (USA),“A guitar ‘n’ piano soaked goosebump popper (‘Fireisland’)” – DJ Mag UK,“Touchstone’, Solarstone’s new artist album will shake up expectations of what trance should be.” DJ Mag (UK),“Solarstone has definitely delivered an amazing piece of work on Electronic Architecture and understood perfectly how to combine different styles on this compilation.” Raveline,“A magical blend of music, art and design” that “recalls the understated magic of Sasha and Digweed’s first Renaissance albums” Tilllate Magazine (UK),“Electronic Architecture is a very strong and original compilation to say the least.
