BAIHUI (百会 in Mandarin Chinese) joins China’s growing underground community as an online radio station aimed at ‘gathering rich and diverse voices’ and connecting the music communities across the world’s most populous country. Programmes on BAIHUI cover electronic music genres including Techno, Trance, Downtempo, Electronica, Drum & Bass, House, etc.

The independent station made its launch this week with its inaugural broadcast held on June 21, 2021 from 2pm to 10pm on its official website. Each programme lasted an hour, and were each hosted by different artists that included CORA, Yu Su, and HAO among many others. The inaugural broadcast can be heard here on their official website.

The online radio station is the brainchild of DJs Knopha, Slowcook, and Frau. According to Slowcook, the idea for an online radio station was conceived back in 2018. Knopha further elaborated on his social media that the successful establishment of the station was ‘after numerous conversations, meetings, (and) emails’ in order to ‘break through layers after layers of technical issues’, which may be challenging to understand for those who are not familiar with China’s internet environment.

According to their official website, the name BAIHUI was inspired by an acupuncture point of the same name that is situated on top of one’s head. ‘A meeting point for expression, a central crossing to which music fans can open their minds to new sounds.’, the website elaborates on the inspiration behind the station’s name. This resonates well with the radio station’s aim to gather the diverse sounds as well as connecting the different music communities across China.

The radio station held its second live broadcast titled [Zhaodai On Leave 2021 Rewind] on June 24, 2021 (Thursday) with eight selected recordings from the Zhao Dai On Leave Music Festival aired during the broadcast. The recordings were selected as a means to represent the diversity of sounds from the festival.

Their third, upcoming broadcast will be held live on June 27, 2021 (Sunday) from 4pm to 10pm on their website. The broadcast will be hosted by Hualun, Kaishandao, Simon Frank, and none other than the founder himself - Knopha - for each hour. Listeners can tune in into both broadcasts, as well as their future broadcasts, on their official website. Users can also find more information on the schedules of future broadcasts and events on the official website:
