Spaceport America, renowned as the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport, has recently found itself entangled in an unexpected controversy. While it has served as the launch site for Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, enabling historic human spaceflights, a recent development suggests that there might be more to this facility than meets the eye.

In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has raised concerns about a potential pirate radio station operating within the premises of Spaceport America. On May 24, the FCC's enforcement arm sent a notice to the spaceport, indicating that their Denver office is currently investigating a complaint regarding the operation of an unlicensed FM broadcast station on frequencies 95.3 MHz and 96.3 MHz.

"An Agent from the Denver Office confirmed that unauthorized radio signals were transmitted on frequencies 95.3 MHzx and 96.3 MHz from the Spaceport America property located between Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, between June 21 and June 25, 2022, during the Spaceport America Cup 2022 event."

As the investigation unfolds, the potential fine of over $2 million serves as a sobering reminder of the significance of regulatory compliance. This allegation casts a shadow of uncertainty over the spaceport, and the potential implications of such unauthorized transmissions.
