After getting to know each other in Zürich in 2008, Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer became inseparable, not just as friends, but also as artists. The two men carved out a career as one of the most consistently delivering DJ/producer duos in the house and techno scene: Adriatique. The key to an enduring partnership is, of course, to complement each other, and the two Adrians do so admirably. Music-wise, their various tastes combine into one unique sound, and their respective preference for studio work and performance means that both aspects are equally well covered. Adriatique’s DJ performances as well as their productions are long, meditative, relentlessly building affairs, ever challenging the listener with subtle twists interrupting their hypnotic groove. DJ and producer Marcel Dettmann is recognised as one of the most influential proponents of contemporary techno. Widely associated with iconic trademarks including Berlin, Berghain and Hard Wax, Dettmann stays true to his roots by consistently innovating his interpretation of electronic music, integrating art with the scene. Raised in the former GDR, in a small town near Berlin, Dettmann had already begun to develop his passion for electronic music in his youth. Bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and Front 242, as well as post-punk and industrial, count as his earliest influences, long before he discovered his affinity for techno. His hometown lacked a record store specialising in electronic music, so between 1995 and 1998 Dettmann began selling vinyl from his own home. He purchased records from various distributers, Hard Wax amongst others, both to resell to his friends and to cement the foundation for his own considerable collection. Like many of his friends, the mid-nineties saw Dettmann frequenting Berlin’s nightlife. This included club institutions E-Werk and Tresor where the resident DJs of that time aroused his passion for the Chicago and Detroit influenced sound. In 1999, after many (including self-organised) parties, his turning point came; Dettmann began to work as a resident DJ at Ostgut, Berghain’s predecessor. Shortly thereafter upon receiving a job offer from Hard Wax, he finally moved to Berlin. His apprenticeship as a vinyl buyer and seller as well as DJ, granted him an extensive depth of musical knowledge and intuition. Dettmann quests tirelessly for new ways and inspiration to further develop his own concept of electronic music. His label MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records) serves as a platform upon which to shape his musical vision, and through its releases, to launch new talent onto the techno scene. As a curator and producer, Dettmann fosters the call to create in a way which is equally timeless and innovative. His own releases comprise two albums on Ostgut Ton, numerous singles and remixes for artists of various genres – Junior Boys, Fever Ray, Moderat, Commix, Clark and Laibach to name a few. Furthermore, he has produced compilation albums for London’s fabric club, Berlin’s Berghain, the Belgian techno label Music Man and one issue of the DJ Kicks compilation series on !K7 imprint. Outside of the club context, Marcel Dettmann has established himself as a multi-faceted artist. He designed the sound concept for „New Works“, an exhibition of photographer Frederike von Rauch, contributed to the contemporary dance project „Masse“ – together with Frank Wiedemann and choreographer Nadja Saidakowa in cooperation with Berghain and the Berlin State Ballet. His single “Seduction feat. Emika” provided the soundtrack to director and screenwriter Parker Ellerman’s short film of the same name. As a passionate DJ and one of the faces of Berghain, Dettmann seeks to inspire his listeners with sounds both reduced and rough, balanced by emotional and surprising moments throughout his sets. Shortly thereafter, Martin Gretschmann became a part of The Notwist and and added a certain electronic twist to the band. With his solo project Acid Pauli he created several records, remixes and podcast in the last couple of years. One of dance music’s brightest stars, 27-year old Berlin based producer and live act Ben Böhmer has had another monumental year. His debut album ‘Breathing’, released on Anjunadeep at the end of 2019, has since attained over 25 million streams, drawing admirers from across the Electronic music spectrum; including Boris Brejcha, who remixed the title track and pronounced Ben as his ‘Breakthrough Artist of 2020’. A string of other singles and remixes released across the year have seen Ben become a mainstay in the flagship Electronic playlists and Beatport 100, as he sets his sights on his second album, due out towards the end of 2021.

Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock is without a doubt one of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history. A resident at Berghain since its opening in 2004, he has been able to leave his mark on the club’s unique sound, in turn the special space influenced Klock’s approach as a DJ and producer as well. Playing techno sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves, releasing records on Ostgut Ton and last but not least the aesthetics of his own label Klockworks (founded in 2006), have earned him an excellent international reputation over the last few years. Supported by stringent and enthralling tracks, remixes for such diverse artists as Kerri Chandler, Martyn or Depeche Mode, the revered debut album “One” on Ostgut Ton and his Berghain mix, Ben Klock’s name is synonymous with the vitalization of an essential definition of techno.

Considering his meteoric rise to fame, it would be easy to stereotype Black Coffee as just another black diamond, a BEE beat magnet out to mine the insatiable upwardly mobile urban house-party market. But as he proved on his South African Music Award-winning album Home Brewed, this DJ and producer defies convention. Sidestepping Afro-house clichés and stage-managed highs in favour of restrained sophistication, Black Coffee’s penchant is for true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but trendsetting, fashion-conscious and future-focused. Expect almost sculptural balance and beauty.

From Utrecht, Carista is the DJ everyone wants to open for them. Self-taught, she bought her first pair of turntables at 19 and turned to YouTube tutorials. After winning a mixtape competition hosted by Rotterdam club BIRD in 2012, she landed a gig and subsequent residency at BIRD and other local clubs. Word started to travel about the charismatic selector, curator, and DJ. She went on to land herself a monthly radio show at Red Light Radio and NTS which got her noticed by a slew of festival programmers. She’s since made her debuts on Boiler Room and at festivals like Secretsundaze, Dekmantel, and ADE, where she opened for De School’s 62-hour party. Glasgow-based DJ/producer Hector Barbour (aka Denis Sulta) creates vivacious, melodic house with underground sensibilities. Born in Glasgow in 1993, he grew up with a keen interest in dance music, landing his first job at the infamous record shop Rubadub. It was during his tenure there that he took up both music production and DJ'ing under the guidance of his co-workers, who were all very passionate about the scene. His early tracks were darker in tone, but as he started playing more and more gigs, his music became more uplifting. To reflect the change in style, he reversed the name Atlus to Sulta and adopted Denis as a prefix (originally spelled "Dennis," a printing error led him to drop an "n" in favor of Denis). From there he went on to release EPs, eventually setting up his own label and brand, Sulta Selects. Although only 28, DJ Marky is already a veritable superstar DJ in his homeland Brasil. Based in Sao Paulo, the clubbing and dance music capital of Brasil, Marky is well established as one of Brazil’s biggest DJs and producer talents. DJ Marky began making a name for himself in the early 90’s pioneering the sounds of UK Drum & Bass/Jungle, appealing to lovers of dance music of all styles for his sheer artistry on a pair of Technics 1210’s. In 94/95 Jungle became popular in Brasil and DJ Marky emerged as one of Brasil’s leading DJs of this new exciting scene. He stopped working at record shop, Up Dance Records, moving on to a high profile residency at the then legendary Toca club. Marky had radio shows on various stations both mainstream and underground, and his success at that time culminated in the mid-90’s with a massive drum & bass/jungle compilation released on UK’s Suburban Base Records. Marky was awarded DJ of the year in Brasil in 95 and 96 and was runner up in 98.

Bristol, England DJ and producer Eats Everything started out spinning jungle and drum'n'bass. Over the years, the man born Daniel Pearce incorporated more bass-loaded house into his repertoire, crafting a party-starting sound the likes of Carl Cox. His non-stop party started in 2011 with his debut track, "Entrance Song" (Pets Records), a heartier and richer version of Disclosure's deep house. The Eats Everything EP followed on Dirtybird, and Pearce, preferring performing over studio time, continued with a series of consistent releases over the following years. What that artist name (and real name) entails is a very deep trip into an extremely creative mind, a very interesting one. The main and very special aspect of what makes Nicolas Lutz him artistically is the ethos in how he stands by his music, his vision. Nicolas' medium of choice is vinyl and the cultural tradition it brings with it. In such a digital age the tendency from the general public to think that Djs that only use vinyl are ‘dinosaurs’or ‘behind’ or ‘limited’ is apparent and the beauty about Nicolas is that he proves them wrong leaving them wondering what has hit them on a dance floor. Nina Kraviz is one of techno’s most iconic DJs. Famous for both her dynamic and varied DJ sets, captivating performances and her acclaimed label трип (Trip), she’s been a techno powerhouse since she launched on the scene in 2009. In 2020, she played a series of live stream events and virtual festivals including an empty Dance Arena at EXIT and even on top of Mount Olympus in Greece. She also collaborated with streaming giants Spotify when she was chosen to be part of their trackID series, providing a regularly updated playlist to the platform that includes tracks from her own label as well as a diverse collection of releases from across multiple genres. That genre-hopping is also evident in her sets, where trance, techno, ambient and hardstyle can all be heard in one swoop, with her inimitable presence in the booth adding to the allure of Kraviz’s sets. Peggy Gou is a South Korean-born DJ and producer based in Berlin. During the 2010s, she became internationally renowned for energetic DJ sets, which dreamily flow through various styles of techno, house, and electro. Her own tracks, such as the acclaimed 2018 single "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)," are vibrant, joyous productions that echo vintage deep house and post-disco without sounding like a throwback. ~

A familiar face on Amsterdam's thriving underground scene, Pieter Jansen has been bubbling away beneath the surface of the Dutch scene since the early part of the decade. Watch him cultivate a personal DJ style that prioritizes darker and deeper records while remaining focused on the dancefloor.

Dutch producer-duo Polynation stormed the scene in 2015 with their lustrous debut EP Allogamy. Adopting both rhythmic tension and a wide range of acoustic and electronic tools, Stijn Hosman and Hessel Stuut gradually translated their intricate studio finesse to the more improvisational, spontaneous dynamic of live performance. In the process, tracks like ‘Why You’ and ‘Anther’ amassed wide international acclaim, earning airplay by Gilles Peterson on BBC6 and performing festivals like Amsterdam Dance Event, Best Kept Secret, Eurosonic and Pitch Festival. In May 2019, Polynation’s full-length debut Igneous is released on Atomnation - a product of two laborious years of studio tinkering.

DJ/producer Prunk is working at his own pace, but this doesn’t mean he’s taking things slow. His label PIV, which he started in 2015, has been steadily releasing EP’s, like his own production ‘Sexy Brasil’ that was released on the imprint in the spring of 2016. Together with his sparring partner Chris Stussy, Prunk released the ‘Material’ EP on EWax in the winter of 2016 and the two also released ‘The Machine’ EP that came out on the notorious Nervous Records and EP’s on Moulton and Innercity Records. These EP’s caught the attention of vocalist Alex Mills, who you can hear on Miguel Campbell’s hit Something Special. Prunk and Mills hooked up in the studio with No Cure as a result. Other labels Prunk has released records on are: Electronique, City Soul and King Street. Next to producing Prunk is a resident STRAF_WERK and he is a regular at DGTL and Jenja (Bali), has played in Monaco, Barcelona, Zürich, Lille, São Paulo, Ibiza and at Awakenings Festival. As one of the most heavily supported and best-sold techno producers of the moment, notorious for his powerful live performances at renowned festivals and clubs, Reinier Zonneveld is currently taking over the contemporary scene with his unique view on techno. In spite of his young age, Zonneveld already managed to score several charting hits, including Beatport overall no.1 “Things We Might Have Said”, which was included on his well-received artist album “Megacity Servant” and later on landed in a Hollywood production.

As far back as the early '90s, Ricardo Villalobos began building an impressive discography of 12" releases on respected dance labels like Playhouse and Perlon, and around the turn of the decade he was one of the most revered producers and DJs in dance music. In his youth, the Chilean-born Villalobos moved with his family to Germany in order to avoid the military dictatorship of Pinochet, and he eventually fell in with the country's fertile house community. A minimalist at heart, he trotted the globe to study percussion in order to apply his knowledge to his productions, which almost always sound remarkably expansive despite their simplicity. In addition to his own solo material, he has recorded with fellow expatriate Dandy Jack as Ric y Martin and with Luciano as Sense Club; additionally, he has taken part in Markus Nikolai's Hombre Ojo project. ~ AllMusic

Richie Hawtin played an essential role in developing the sound of minimal techno, as well as spreading its popularity throughout the global club scene. Most famous for his experimental acid techno productions as Plastikman, including the classic albums Musik (1994) and Consumed (1998), he is equally well-regarded for his groundbreaking live sets and mix CDs (especially 1999's Decks, EFX & 909) which utilize cutting-edge DJ technology, fusing loops of techno records with additional synthesizers and drum machines. Initially based in Windsor, Ontario and connected with the techno scene in nearby Detroit, he co-founded the highly influential Plus 8 (and its harder sublabel Probe Records) along with John Acquaviva, later establishing Minus and relocating to Berlin during the early 2000s, just as minimal techno began receiving mainstream exposure. Hawtin has continued pushing the limits of technology, developing highly conceptual events which are often intertwined with the art world. ~ AllMusic

North Wales native Sasha became one of the world's most renowned and popular DJs, known for populist fusions of house, techno, and trance. Starting out in the late '80s as a club DJ, the former Alexander Coe got his first big break when he was hired by the dance club Shelly's to spin and rework popular sounds of the day. Her production work, including the widely praised 2016 single "He Is the Voice I Hear," walks the line between disco and techno, with the emotional weight of the former and the driving momentum of the latter. Los Angeles-based Egyptian Lover aka Greg Broussard was one of the early pioneers of the hip-hop/electro fusion-movement and made history with the singles Egypt Egypt (1984) and Freak-A-Holic (1986). What can be told that can’t be tallied in raw statis...tics (which he’s a total stickler for), or an unfurled parchment scroll of places gone and plaudits won? The duality of a life split between aspirational popstar and touring deejay falls short: by this point in time he’s lived dozens of lives, let alone a mere two. Frankly the only claim that doesn’t wash is that of being in a legacy mode – because that, to him, denotes the cardinal sin of coasting. And that just won’t do. The core engine pushing Tiga forward is ambition. It’s there, everywhere: at the dials in any given club in any given city in any given country on any given weekend; burning the midnight oil in the Research & Development wing of his career control centre, crisp shirt sleeves rolled, assessing and strategising over his next move; with his feet up on the gleaming glass desk in the penthouse office of Turbo Towers, gold plaques of decade-dominating dancefloor delights flanking him – it’s there. Self-aware, well-moderated, yet totally unrepentant ambition. Plus a bit of wit, too. To be insulated from any real backlash over a quarter-century in the game and across many different hats worn, a touch of humility and humour certainly helps it all go down easy. His goal is to dunk on people with success, but do so in a friendly way, soaring overhead with the sly wink of chutzpah (but never the nudge-nudge of solipsistic irony for irony’s sakes). To maintain pole position while swerving between all these lanes with impunity, he taps into a well-spring of regenerating desire. From the getgo Tiga has sought to not merely play a part in the culture he abandoned all life commitments for age 17, but frequently scale its heights too: Attending Berlin’s Love Parade circa ’92-95, then hearing DJ Hell drop “Sunglasses At Night” to the masses not too many years later. An army of collaborators, remixers and remixees have provided vital thrust over the years. From Alter Ego and Azari & III through Duke Dumont and Depeche Mode; from Matthew Dear and Moby, through Zombie Nation and Zdar, Phillipe; Paranoid London, Pusha T, Pet Shop Boys and Peaches.…on and on it goes. Read between the lines and you’ll get a measure of the man. Teamwork affords stimulus, shuts down ego, and juices something he can’t get to alone. At heart, it brings out the best in Tiga. So it’ll prove in 2018, where the fingers of his well-combed Rolodex currently rest on entries marked Kolsch, The Martinez Brothers, and Hudson Mohawke. The fruits of this friendly jousting with find their way out of track ID requests and into the shops before long (perhaps even by the moment you read this – hope you’re enjoying the future and remembered to short your cryptocurrency in time). It would be a lot easier to rest on his laurels by this point, really. To trade on former glories, reflect fondly on a career spent dovetailing in and out of the spotlight with likeminded friends, turning in a jaded, half-assed representation of himself at festivals and recording sessions when the taxman comes knocking. But Tiga is still too confident, self-respecting, and – how did you guess? – ambi-tious for that. The challenge he seeks is to keep experiencing the frisson of creative alchemy, to lock into a groove where he is truly in the zone, to dig deep and reproduce a fresh take on that first-love feeling of music: something that connects with young ravers and inspires the same spark he felt all those years ago. Jason Chue, better known as Wookie, is a UK garage musician. He scored a UK top 10 hits in 2000 with his song, "Battle". Chue's career began in 1991 as a producer for UK R&B/reggae artist Wayne Marshall, producing most of Marshall's debut album 90 Degrees and Rising in 1994. Shortly after, Chue became writer/producer for Soul II Soul at their studio, working with Jazzie B for several years. He would also go on to produce for Dynamite MC and Doom Man.[2] Chue has remixed tracks by Destiny's Child, Public Enemy and Nas, among others. In the late 1990s, the 'Wookie sound' became apparent in his bootleg mixes of songs by Whitney Houston, Brandy and Debelah Morgan.
