about
Steve Lawler is a definitive DJ and producer; a tastemaker whose sets combine quality house music with the power to move dance floors around the world. In the last few years, he’ wowed crowds in such far flung places as Zouk in Singapore, Groovejet in Miami, Twilo in New York and the mighty Space in Ibiza. Courtesy of home, he provided the most groundbreaking sets of the season for many of those lucky enough to hear him. After two months he had been crowned ‘King Of Space’ by the locals – a rare and well deserved honour.,You can find Steve behind the decks every Friday at Deep South @ home, where his 5 hour sets of twisted house are bringing a new lease of life to one of London’ biggest clubs. As well as guest spots at every pioneering club in the UK from Renaissance to Bedrock.,If one person had to be singled out for Deep South’ success it would be none other than top-class resident Steve Lawler. Whose mammoth five-hour sets of chunky house and intoxicating tribal progressive sounds have dragged him into the realms of the superstar DJ, and the club into one of the clubbing success stories of the year. But modest as ever, Steve puts it down to a combination of factors:,“I wouldn’t accept that it’ all down to me,” understates Lawler. “There are a lot of people involved in making that night good. I just do what I do.”,Steve Lawler hails from the Midlands, yet there is something distinctly non-territorial in his work. Although loving the atmosphere in the big Saturday nightclubs (he’ an ex-resident at Cream), Lawler also refuses to pander to any punter wherever he’ spinning, especially at home. Think DJ communism, with equal treatment for all the masses.," It’ rewarding for me to know that so many people are going off to underground music every Friday night across the country. Clubs like home and Renaissance have the best soundsystems and crowds in the UK, and the feeling you get from playing those nights is amazing".,Tuning into electronic music from an early age, Steve used to buy Depeche Mode records when he was young, so he obviously loved electronic sounds without even realising it. But it was acid house that really turned Steve on. Tuning avidly in to local pirate PCRL radio station gave Steve a taste for house music, and it wasn’t long before his mates were luring him off to warehouse parties.,“I was totally blown away by the whole experience: the dark room, the strobes and the atmosphere. The whole thing just blew me away and inspired me to do my own parties.”,Which is exactly what he did, putting on a series of illegal parties in a disused tunnel under the M42 between 1990-1994. “The last one was just amazing. We had Tony de Vit playing, and it had just grown from this small party to this huge thing – basically a rave. It was all about town the day before, people running around Birmingham going ‘The tunnel’ on, the tunnel’ on.’”,But it was in Ibiza that Lawler got his first true break. Having earned his Ibiza stripes – he’ been every year since 1990 through to 1997 it was finally Steve’ chance to prove himself as an accomplished DJ. He was a resident at Café Mambo, spinning his legendary 8 hour sets there every day, as well as playing three times a week at Pacha. It was then he was spotted by Darren Hughes, then of Cream, who recognised his talent and ambition to succeed. Signing him up to Cream’ DJing agency, he began a residency at the eponymous Liverpool institution. At only his second date at the club he had to follow Paul Oakenfold at their NYE party. Not an easy feat, but one which Lawler coped with admirably. The rest, as they say, is history…,It’ not all about DJing though. Lawler’ accomplished production, under the monikers of Novocane, Chameleon and, naturally, Steve Lawler, are currently causing mayhem amongst the likes of Tenaglia, Tong, Sasha, Digweed, Deep Dish, and Pete Heller. ‘Rise In’, his latest single, is a self-assured cut of heavy dancefloor pressure, which, as with all the best things, has simplicity as its key. Watch it drop on any dancefloor in the world and you realise that Lawler, in his production as much as his DJing, understands how to work a crowd. ‘Rise In’ is set for a September release, and if you’ve been near any of the coolest dance floors on the planet, you’ll have realised just how special the track is. The buzz around the tune has superceded any of this summer’ releases, and the Top 20 beckons. Who’d have thought proper house music would once again reach such heights? But then, as most of you know, Lawler is something very special.,“First and foremost I am a DJ,” explains Steve. “I am not making records for a career or the money, it’ just that I want to make my own version of sounds that would go down well in a club. When I make music I sit there and close my eyes and imagine being on a dancefloor, with the lights and the soundsytem. It’ hard to get right all the time, but I’m going to keep banging away at it until I do”.,Which is pretty much Steve Lawler for you. A hardworking Midlands lad who has never taken the easy path to success. From his mammoth sets at Space in Ibiza, or his tendency to re-edit half the tracks in his box, Steve certainly knows the meaning of graft:,“I do a lot of my own re-edits, because I get sent so many records where its all good and then some horrible break kicks in. So I just cut that bit out, get it on to CD and then go and get a slate cut. It’ the way forward. It means that a lot of records that people might have, I have my own versions of them. It makes it unique, which you have to do these days. There’ 1001 DJs out there. It’ probably one of the reasons why I have actually got somewhere… I do make the effort.”,Steve’ spun at every club in Ibiza, and every decent club in the world, and has stunned all detractors of the progressive sound. He was described in The Face as, “The UK’ Tenaglia”, and in Jockey Slut as “one of the best dj’ in the world”.,Steve Lawler: the pioneer of twisted house who loves a bit of hard work. If you were waiting for a change of musical tack, then follow Lawler’ lead. Don’t be left behind…

  • Guy Gerber

Tel Aviv-based dance music producer Guy Gerber, who incorporates the best aspects of progressive house/trance, deep house, and techno into a unique style of his own, established himself as a rising star in 2004 with "Stoppage Time," a popular release by Bedrock Records that opened the door to a high-profile recording contract with Cocoon Recordings soon thereafter. Growing up in Israel, Gerber grew up playing soccer. By the time he'd reached his mid-teens, though, he'd found a new passion: music, in particular seminal English-language alternative rock bands of the '80s like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, the Cure, and Joy Division. He himself took up playing the guitar as a result. His tastes quickly extended beyond '80s alt rock, and he developed an affection for a variety of music, from the Beach Boys and the Beatles, to Kraftwerk and Chic, to Curtis Mayfield and Jimi Hendrix, to Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground. He also got into electronic dance music. ~ AllMusic

  • MARKUS SCHULZ

Introduction: Over the last 10 years Markus Schulz has fused the individual musical identities of progressive house & trance into his own creative, inimitable hybrid sound. Through the unique alignment of his headline DJ sets, Coldharbour label output and highly prominent Global DJ Broadcast show, he orchestrated a sea change revolution in the US trance scene – one that has gone on to have its sound influence sweep to the farthest reaches of the globe. This success has been singularly reflected in weekly headliner sets in front of many tens of thousands, a GDJB radio show listenership up in the tens of millions & one Beatport chart-topping release after another. Following several highly ranked positions in 2008 Shultz punched his way into the Top 10 of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 chart, landing at no.8. In repeating the exact same achievement in 2009, he now stands, quite unequivocally, as America’s no.1 club DJ.,Early History: Born in Eschwege, central Germany, Markus emigrated to the United States. Age 13, Markus’ dance music awakening came during the grip of the country’s then-exploding breakdance scene. His early production and DJ career roughly tracked that of the 2nd Stateside coming of House and he caught his first production break in 1993 when he remixed Sagat’s ‘Why Is It? (F** Dat)’ for Pete Tongs FFrr label. Markus’ freshman production release followed in 1994 with the 6-track-strong ‘Plastik Trax EP Vol 1’. Throughout the mid to late Nineties he continued to pull in early acclaim with a range of releases on numerous US luminary labels. In 1998 he recorded ‘You Won’t See Me Cry’ for Plastik Records (his first label), a release which was picked up by Eve Records for the UK. This became Markus’ first international calling card… the world had started to tune in.,Markus Schulz – The DJ: Through his natural audience affinity, flawless (and seemingly effortless) mixing and innate tune selection, he has wowed crowds in pretty much every major district, principality and metropolis. Schulz’s DJ career has, to the greater degree, run parallel to that of his productions. In the early Noughties, having fixed focus on the hinterland between trance & progressive, he began to reach audiences further and further afield. In 2004 he was signed to the David Lewis Productions agency (also home of the World’s No.1 DJ Armin Van Buuren) and his career took another big step forward. Now a regular fixture at the world’s biggest & most famous clubs, arenas and festivals, he lays down his unique trance-progressive vision on a weekly basis. In Europe, he’s smashed Trance Energy, Nature One & Dance Valley, worked tent-pegs loose at Creamfields & Global Gathering and brought gridlock to the Love Parade. Stateside the colossal Electric Daisy & Ultra Festivals have both felt the Schulz pressure and yet further afield still he’s induced floor upheaval in China and Australia (most recently at the Future Music Festival). After several significant showings in the Top 100 DJs chart, he now ranks as one of the top 10 DJs in the world and in 2008 was voted Best American DJ at the International Dance Music Awards.,Coldharbour Recordings: Schulz’s sound notably came quickest to the ears of continental European DJs. Following the formation of the Armada group in 2005, Armin sought Markus out and asked him to start compiling tracks for a new vinyl series. The Coldharbour Sessions EPs launched in 2004 (with the first 3 releases coming out on the already established Electronic Elements label). In quick succession they began to leave crater-like impacts on dancefloors and within 12 months Coldharbour the label was born. Named after Markus’ then-production base in London’s Coldharbour Lane, its output immediately brought a new fission sound to Armada. It also became a lightning rod for a new generation of prog-inclined producers – setting in motion the careers of (amongst others) Santiago Nino, Probspot, Mark Otten & Niklas Harding. With 2005 under the spell of Coldharbour’s more sophisticated, minimal, but still melodic take on the prog-trance sound, Markus struck again with the first Coldharbour Sessions mix compilation. Such has been the success of the imprint that in 2007 it was joined by a sub-label, Coldharbour Red. This, in turn, was a launch pad for Marcus Schössow, tyDi, Glenn Morrison & Evol Waves and was the point of re-entry for early Schulz side-project, Dakota (see Dakota section below). Six years after its birth, in 2010, Coldharbour stands at the top tier of the world’s trance & progressive labels and has reached the threshold of its 100th release.,M.S. Productions 2005 – 2010: Perfectly intersecting the quality/quantity axis, Markus’ own productions have been the most fundamental of components in marshalling clubbers and music lovers to his sound. Over the course of the last half-decade tracks like ‘First Time’ & ‘Without You Near’ (2005), ‘Fly To Colours’, ‘Never Be The Same’ & ‘I Am’ (2007) ‘Perfect’ & ‘Cause You Know’ (2008) & most recently ‘The New World’ & ‘Do You Dream’ have each played their vital part. Markus is also a keen production collaborator. In 2005 he famously teamed up with likeminded producers Gabriel & Dresden and Departure for ‘Without You Near’ and in mid-2008 did the same with Andy Moor on ‘Daydream’. The impact of all the singles has been cauterized by his studio albums ‘Without You Near’ (2005) & ‘Progression’ (2007). Schulz is currently recording his third long-player, which is scheduled for release between Qs 2&3, 2010.,The Global DJ Broadcast show: Now in its fifth year Schulz’s GDJB has continued to be a beacon for an always-growing throng of trance & progressive dance fans. Broadcast through leading station DI.fm and Sirius/XM satellite, the Global DJ Broadcast site and 50+ other FM & internet stations around the planet, it has become every bit required listening for the EDM-savvy. Based on a regular format, the first show of each month is a two hour long mix from one of Schulz’s rolling World Tour gigs – ones that have of late included Medellin, Columbia, St Petersberg, Russia & Amnesia in Ibiza. Subsequent shows in the month feature Markus mixing his broad-span pick of the current electronic dance music best for an hour (which includes the forum-voted Global Selection track of the week) followed by guest mixes from both established and up-and-coming DJs.,Markus Schulz – The City Albums: Markus is also responsible for one of the longest running and most respected compilation album series in trance/electronic dance history. Kicking off in 2005 in Miami, its city-hopping concept has gone on to spotlight Ibiza in ’06, Amsterdam in ’08 and Toronto in ’09. Providing a microcosmic view of his now instantly recognisable sound, they have become cornerstones for fans CD & mp3 collections, with each new travelogue edition bringing in a fresh wave of supporters. Notably, the Amsterdam ’08 release was nominated for an IDMA award for Best Full Length DJ Mix (in the same year that Markus took home the trophy for Best American DJ).,Remixes: Markus powered into remix action in the early 90s with a 30+ volley of high-profile reworks. Over the course of the decade he re-tooled the production works of Euro dominators like The Real McCoy & Technotronic, house masters & divas Armand Van Helden & Liz Torres, legendary Nineties icons RuPaul, Bette Midler & Sandra Bernhard and fully-fledged A-listers like Madonna. As the Millennium arrived though he began to work on deeper, more intrinsically electronic dance fare… In 2000 he remixed trance innovator Pablo Gargano’s ‘Absolution’, PQM’s Renaissance classic ‘The Flying Song’ and Fatboy Slims ‘Sunset (Bird of Prey). Satisfied that he’d found the right dance strata to focus on Markus has gone on to rewire tracks by Oceanlab, Motorcycle, Dance 2 Trance, Cosmic Gate, Nalin & Kane, Kyau & Albert, John O’Callaghan, & Space Manoeuvres amongst many, many others.,Markus Schulz aka: Dakota: Markus has only made rare use of pseudonyms through his career – seeing them as being only valuable if they represent an outlet for something other than his ‘regular’ output. At the turn of the last decade Schulz released 3 tracks (‘Swirl’, ‘Frozen’ & ‘Lost in Brixton’) under the moniker Dakota. Over time these became focal points for the year-on-year exponential intake of new fans. In 2009 Schulz paid dividend to that by resurrecting the guise, updating its sound and directed his attentions on a whole album of new Dakota material. ‘Thoughts Become Things’ was the end product and with it came a route diversion that went into a new valley-deep sound – one that expanded to embrace the fringes of techno, house and other sub-genres. It once again fortified the Schulz’s fanbase and expanded the range of DJ support for his music. The album has thus far justified 7 single releases that have included particular fan-favourites ‘Chinook’, ‘Johnny the Fox’, ‘Koolhaus’ & ‘Mr Cappuccino’.,Prepared by Tim Stark.

  • VICTOR CALDERONE

There are DJs and then there’ Victor Calderone.,His name reverberates throughout the dance music community with excitement and anticipation. Calderone’ impact on dance floors worldwide is undisputed. He has skyrocketed to international “superstar” status with his innovative, tribal-inflected remixes of songs from some of the industry’ most successful artists like Madonna, Sting, Destiny’ Child, Mandalay, Garbage and Elton John. Victor has also had tremendous success with his own original productions. His 1996 single “Give It Up” was a #1 Billboard Dance Chart hit and it follow-up “Beat Me Harder” was equally successful.,Five years after the success of “Beat Me Harder,” Calderone is poised to be on top of the dance charts once again with his new original track, “Are You Satisfied?” with vocalist Deborah Cooper. It was Cooper, the former C&C Music Factory vocalist, who recorded the dance smash “Do It Properly” – the much anticipated collaboration between Victor and Peter Rauhofer (aka Club 69),Calderone’ long-awaited follow-up, E=VC2 VOLUME 2, is a record to be reckoned with. It is a deft, bruisingly thunderous fusion of soaring vocal anthems, hypnotic house tracks and a cavalcade of thunderous tribal beats. The flawlessly beat-mixed compilation is definitely not your run of the mill dance mix. Recorded live in the city that never sleeps, New York City, it is pure Victor Calderone. E=VC2 VOLUME 2 allows audiences from around the world a glimpse into the sonic frenzy that the DJ/producer/remixer extraordinaire creates every Saturday night.,However, Calderone’ meteoric rise to dance music “superstardom” did not happen overnight. It wasn’t until September of 1997 that Victor got one of his biggest breaks. He was invited by club-impresario Ingrid Casares of Miami’ hotspot Liquid to become their resident Saturday night DJ. The crowd response was so overwhelmingly positive that he was asked to come back to Manhattan to spin as the featured guest DJ at several nightclubs. The guest spot eventually lead him to a Saturday night residency at the famed New York City nightclub, The Roxy.
