Hatikwa is one of those artists who reached a career breakthrough via Social Media. It is 2009 when he plays his debut live act at Hamburg’s Lonely Forest Project, and this experience is such a rich source of inspiration that he creates a track and names it after that party. Once uploaded on YouTube, "Lonely Forest" spreads rapidly and within no time the name Hatikwa is on the lips and on the Facebook profiles of Progressive Trance fans all over the world. Willem Rebergen, better known as Headhunterz, kicked off his DJ career in 2003. That year, a friend gave him a ticket to Qlimax, and it was love at first sight. Discovering hardstyle music and its dedicated scene changed his life. From that moment on, he committed himself to becoming the best producer in the hardstyle genre. He locked himself up in his tiny bedroom studio, in the attic of his parents’ house in Veenendaal, and quickly learned the ropes of producing. Unaware of the revolution he would start, the foundations of the Headhunterz sound were made. Headhunterz’ new take on Hardstyle music made the genre grow into an international phenomenon. It was no longer just the sound of European raves, but became something worldly. Headhunterz made new audiences fall in love with the unstoppable energy of Hardstyle music. 7 years after visiting his very first hardstyle party he was on top of his career, with each new track captivating both his fanbase and artists outside the scene.

  • Mike Perry

Mike Perry, aka Mikael Persson, is a Swedish DJ and dance producer known for the hit single "The Ocean." Working as a serviceman for Volvo in the Swedish town of Skövde, Persson pursued music as a hobby in his spare time. Exploring his creativity and a multitude of ideas, he started writing with singer/songwriter Shy Martin and Nirob Islam of the electro-pop trio Sodra Station. The result was the aforementioned song, an upbeat dance track composed of warm, summery synth work, pulsating electro beats, and entrancing vocals. Stating that he made sure to not over-complicate the song sonically, Persson aimed to depict the feel and tone of 21st-century dance music with simplicity yet surefire positive vibes. Not expecting it to be a hit, the DJ was astonished when the track eventually went viral, surpassing nine million streams in just six weeks. It shot to the top of the charts in Sweden, while also climbing the Top 40 throughout the rest of Europe. ~ AllMusic

  • AFROJACK

Grammy award winning DJ and producer, Afrojack, is one of most notable and iconic names in electronic dance music (EDM) today. At only 26 years old he has made a large impact on the music industry and is a key player in the worldwide explosion and popularity of EDM. In 2013, Forbes magazine crowned him as #7 on ‘The World’s Highest Paid DJs List’ and this year The Hollywood Reporter called him ‘’a global icon’’ set ‘’to conquer the world.’’ A talented producer and artist Afrojack is versatile and creative with his sound whether creating club hits or producing and remixing for the likes of Beyoncé, Pitbull or Madonna. Afrojack is adept at shifting between genres and playing with his sound and it’s easy to see why his skills are some of the most sought after in the world.,Starting off in his hometown of Spijkenisse, Nick van de Wall aka Afrojack, quickly made a name for himself with a slew of hard-hitting underground releases, before exploding on the music scene in 2011 with the release of ‘Take Over Control’ - an instant worldwide club and chart hit the single reached platinum status in the U.S. Afrojack then went onto develop his own imprint in the production world with his label ‘Wall Recordings’ – a platform by which other passionate EDM artists could grow. He also wanted his label to retain the ‘club music’ brand, something he strives for with every Afrojack release. 2011 also saw Afrojack sign a landmark deal to become one of the first ever DJ’s to sign an annual residency in Las Vegas, at the legendary Wynn Hotel. The residency saw Afrojack perform over a dozen times a year at Wynn clubs including Encore Beach Club, Surrender, Tryst and XS.,From there the success continued; as well as making club hits and collaborating with the likes of David Guetta (co-writing and producing the worldwide smash ‘Titanium’), he also began to team up with and write for A-list pop artists around the world, including Madonna and Chris Brown. In 2011, he co-wrote and produced ‘Give Me Everything’ for Pitbull and Ne-Yo, which to this day has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and reached #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts. Not to mention his production work for Beyonce’s ‘Run the World (Girls),’ his Grammy nominated remix for Leona Lewis’ ‘Collide’ and his 2011 underground track ‘Rock The House,’ which topped the Beatport dance music charts after just three days. The same year he headlined both EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) NY & Las Vegas to over 300,000 people, as well as UMF (Ultra Music Festival) in Miami, Tomorrowland (in Belgium) and Coachella (LA) in addition a colossal 40 city ‘Jacked’ tour of the United States, all packed into 2012.,Last year got off to a monumental start when Afrojack signed an exclusive worldwide deal with Island Def Jam, Island UK and Universal Music Group. The deal saw Afrojack’s talent be recognized and supported by the renowned music label. The first project from the partnership was ‘The Spark’, a single that fused EDM and pop and showed a new sound for Afrojack as an artist. The year continued to be another huge one for Afrojack. For his fourth consecutive year he returned to headline Creamfields and at the Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowworld, he debuted his own ‘Jacked’ stage showcasing his Wall artists. He also found time to shoot a documentary web-series, ‘March of the Afrojack’, which gave fans an insight into the real person behind the Afrojack moniker. The series was released on the Rolling Stone website and saw Nick share many intimate moments and thoughts from his journey on the road along with his personal mantra “If I can do it, you can do it too.”,In late 2013 Afrojack made history as he became the first DJ to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ Stock Market Exchange in New York, as electronic dance company, SFX, went public. This also came in the same week as Afrojack cemented his hands into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the second DJ to ever do this and in doing so reinforced his position as a global music icon.,2014 is set to be another milestone year for Afrojack as he releases his second single ‘Ten Feet Tall’, starts a new DJ residency at Las Vegas hotspot Hakkasan and releases his debut album with Island Records. This spring he returns to Miami as headliner on the Ultra Music Festival and to give his loyal fans a first taste and preview of his highly anticipated album set for release this May.,Given Afrojack’s immense popularity and influence on the music industry it is no surprise that many corporate brands have flocked to him for brand partnerships. Afrojack recently announced a partnership with globally celebrated fashion label ‘G-Star Raw’ for his own line of Afrojack inspired designs that will be sold worldwide. He was also sought out by leading gaming company, Razer, to be a brand consultant on the development of future products. Further, this January saw Nick’s latest single, ‘Ten Feet Tall’, premiere as a part of Bud Light’s new commercial during the Superbowl.,Afrojack has built a global brand that is recognized for influencing attitudes and championing new levels of change for the music world. It is clear from his exponential growth that there is no stopping him and at only 26 years old this is just the beginning…

  • FRITZ KALKBRENNER

FRITZ KALKBRENNER,Biography,Fritz grew up in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg, which is full of projects, sadness and desolation. It’s the nineties – nothing to do but lots to fuck up. And for most of the people from that time and that corner of the world there is nothing more important than first of all: hanging around , killing time and second: music, music ,music.,Month by month Fritz spents all of his little pocket money on spray cans and dusty old Hip-Hop vinyls eg. Eric B. & Rakim, KRS-ONE and Wu-Tang Clan.,And for having a soft spot for those old Hip-Hop artists, his brother Paul and buddy Sascha Funke kept making fun of him.. over and over again! Because Paul and Sascha were already infected by the Techno Virus, and Fritz – the late bloomer in the crew – shall follow the lead some day.,From his brother Paul and Sascha’s point of view, ’97 was the time when they’ve decided to smuggle Fritz into the legendary Berlin club Suicide Circus. The result was that Fritz couldn’t let go from the Tech-House music.. not that he wanted to anyway! The time has come for Fritz to party it up in clubs like WMF, Discount, Tresor and Matrix. He’s having a good time while sucking in all of the new impressions. It wasn’t too long after that where Fritz started his own productions with left-over equipment from his brother Paul. But every life style and action has it’s price, and Fritz’s was failing his high school diploma and dropping out.,Having to choose at that point what his future in music might be, he decides to turn his second passion into a profession.,As a cultural and music journalist, he worked since 2002 for various TV stations such as ARD, MTV and the Deutsche Welle.,But the artist life keept haunting him and one year later he teams up with Sascha Funke to perform a track as a vocalist on Sascha’s debut album “Bravo”.,The first single from Sascha’s abum is the result and “Forms and Shapes” becomes one of the essential tracks that summer.,Fritz keeps building his reputation as a singer by collaborating with Zky, Alexander Kowalski and Monika Kruse. Besides that he was working on his own production skills, he was always looking for his very own sound. Then in autumn 2008 “Sky and Sand” is released, a musical family reunion with his brother Paul which raised the feeling from the first day on that this could be a big one. And it was. “Sky and Sand” didn’t just become an underground anthem, but also reached peak in many european chart positions.,It’s 2009 and the next chapter is ready to start. While Fritz is touring the clubs with his intense Liveact, Chopstick & johnjon could convince him (still unknown how they did it?!) to sign on to their label Suol, where he released two EP’s and numerous Collaborations so far. His full lenght Album „Here Today, Gone Tomorrow“ will be released on Suol in Oktober 2010.

Not bad for two guys from Haifa who started producing music mostly to escape boredom.,“We met in 1996 through a DJ friend,” recalls Erez. “Duvdev was in Goa at the time, and I was working on another project with a German guy. We met and tried to do one track together, and we’ve continued on since then.”,A year later, Erez and Duvdev started buying equipment and began to take Infected Mushroom – a name they stole from a disbanded local punk band – seriously. Finding little influence in Israel’s music scene, they drew inspiration from bands like Metallica and The Prodigy. Early productions led to club dates and gigs at local parties. Before long, the twosome had developed quite a loyal following. While the headlines were filled with news about violence and bloodshed, Infected Mushroom’s music touched the hearts of the burgeoning Israeli trance scene, and clubbers began looking to the band’s music for a respite from the tumultuous political situation.,“People were dying and the government saw that dealing with that as more important than abolishing trance parties,” says Erez. “And now the government is supporting trance parties. They want people to party, instead of staying home. There are places in the United States that you cannot go to because it is too dangerous because there are crazy people living there. It’s the same thing in Israel.”,Brandishing a multi-influenced trance sound that hadn’t been heard before, Erez and Duvdev were turned down by nearly every record label in Israel when they attempted to get a deal. “Nobody wanted to sign us,” recalls Erez. “We went to the biggest and smallest labels in Israel, and nobody was interested. At the time, we really believed in our music and continued looking for people to sign us. Fortunately, there was this A&R guy from BNE named Avi Youssef [and BNE’s owner, Avi Brand] who gave us a chance.”,In 1998, BNE released Infected Mushroom’s debut album, The Gathering. Inspired by the surreal ambient styles of Simon Posford, X-Dream and Transwave, it took a few months for the forward-thinking album to catch on. But once it did, the buzz within the global psy-trance scene became deafening.,The group’s second album, Classical Mushroom, was released in 2000. “This album was totally different that the first album,” says Duvdev, who, like Erez, is a classically trained musician. “Not only did we expand our style, but the album was big in Europe and Japan. It sounded totally different that the other trance music that was happening at the time.”,“The trance scene at the time was really monotonic as opposed to melodic with chords,” adds Erez. “We put a lot of classical elements into that album; it sounded different, and that’s why it stood out. At the beginning, nobody believed in that one as well.”,Infected Mushroom’s third album, B.P. Empire, followed in 2001. The combination of their live show and diverse electronic palette eventually won them the support of critics and a new legion of hardcore fans in North and South America. In 2003, Infected Mushroom issued their sprawling double-disc album, Converting Vegetarians. Perhaps one of their most ambitious recordings to date, Converting Vegetarians was a sonic departure away from trance. Leading the listener through trance, freestyle and ambient sounds, the album paved the way for 2004’s I’m The Supervisor.,“After we made the chilled-out non-danceable side to Converting Vegetarians, we wanted to make something for the trance fans that was danceable and full-on,” says Duvdev of I’m The Supervisor. “This album is trance, except for the last track. There’s more singing, and it’s the most difficult thing we’ve done. Using the voice as an instrument is tough to do. We’re like every band in that we’re trying to search for something new with every album.”,Always one step of their audience, Infected Mushroom are constantly pushing themselves. With fame and success in their homeland and in the global electronic music community, Infected Mushroom threw caution to the wind and relocated to Los Angeles in January 2005. The purpose was to take themselves out of their comfort zone in order to take their music to the next level.,“The weather is a lot like Israel’s,” says Erez, “and we still don’t know the city very well. But we’re here and we’re looking to push ourselves and do the sort of things that we couldn’t do in Israel.”,As they work in their adopted surroundings and continue to tour the world, Erez and Duvdev have added famed Israeli guitarist Erez Netz and Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Jardim to select live shows. They’re also busy finishing material for their seventh album, Vicious DeLicious, which contains a myriad of new musical explorations, from Flamenco guitar, to hip hop, to thrash-metal undertones. They have even been commissioned to remix recordings of rock legends, The Doors. But today they are especially proud to be recognized by their fans – Infected Mushroom was named #12 in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ list, a 14 place jump from their debut on the list last year.,While they see themselves more as an electronic band rather than a psy-trance outfit these days, their track record of producing everything from trance to downtempo makes them feel that they can realize all of their musical aspirations.,“Being in the studio is like playing a PlayStation game, where you have to pass a level each time,” says Duvdev. “That’s our goal every time we do a session. The energy that you get at the parties makes you want to go right back into the studio and create new tracks. You need to be in the studio and do the shows; they’re both connected to each other. Our mission now is the same as when we started out, and that’s to get Infected Mushroom’s music out to more people.”

  • James Monro

Born in the UK and now settled in South America, James Monro's immersion within the music industry goes back some 30 years. Having been classically trained at school, James' musical influences diverged into a long and keen love affair with all things electronic. From his initiation into the otherworldly sounds of Yello, Jean Michelle Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Visage, Human League, Brian Eno, Georgio Moroder and the more left field electronic experimental bands of the early 80's, and combined with a deep love of the psychedelic bands of the 70's, disco and early hip hop, it was inevitable that he fall into a passionate relationship with electronic dance music. He entered into club land, journeyed through the early daze of Acid House, the uk's "summers of love" in '88 and '89 , onto the beaches of Goa in the early '90's and out into the global circuit of parties and festivals that have since become his playground. Jahan Yousaf, Yasmine Yousaf, and Kris Trindl (aka Rain Man) formed the EDM trio Krewella in Chicago, Illinois. They got together in 2007 but didn’t release their first material until 2011, when they uploaded a handful of songs — including the jagged, celebratory “Life of the Party” — to their Soundcloud page. In 2012, they self-released their first two EPs: Play Hard (June), featuring the reggae-flavored “Killin It,” and Play Harder (December). The former reached number ten on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. The same year, the trio became a staple of the festival circuit, including New York’s Electric Zoo and Texas’ Meltdown. 2013 saw the release of the groups first full-length, the bombastic Get Wet. The album spawned several singles and videos, including the sensational underground anthem “Live for the Night.”

  • M.A.N.D.Y.

There is an air of mystery shrouding the true meaning behind the acronym of M.A.N.D.Y., an alias which embodies the mutual talents of childhood friends Philipp Jung and Patrick Bodmer. The pair readily indulge this curiosity by toying with various clever possibilities, including Me AND You, but the truth is likely a giggle under each of their talented breaths. P and P have carved a unique niche in electronic music by consistently selecting productions that induce their audience into a somatic frenzy. On the platform of their aptly titled Get Physical label, M.A.N.D.Y. has achieved massive success in colluding to create music that simply makes bodies move. Their foot stamping, hair flying passion is the ultimate expression of a dance music phenomenon for many years.,When M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade joined as musical soul mates with DJ T., first in Frankfurt, then in Berlin, Get Physical produced a caliber of electricity that rippled throughout the EDM community and into the relative mainstream. Philipp’s charm and savvy, Patrick’s allusive artistry, DJ T.‘s killer entrepreneurial sense and Booka Shade’s collaborative genius combined to form a masterpiece of intelligent design that reflects romantic sensibility and technical virtuosity. Together, they push the boundaries of dance music to compile an enviable arsenal of electro kissing house while caressing disco and flirting with techno. Body Language was the ubiquitous hit of 2005 and M.A.N.D.Y.’s Fabric Series three years later cemented their reputation as two of the most captivating selectors on the planet. One of their most recent prestige was a complication for Renaissance in 2009 which was met with tremendous accolades and described by Resident Advisor as “maturity, smarts, and cohesion…that is rare these days.”,Philipp and Patrick know exactly which buttons to press to make that bass jiggle up your spine and seduce your body free. Alongside many lives compadres Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y. has taken some time from their hectic global tour schedule to devise new, elaborations, culminating in the release of Body Language Vol. 10 in April 2011. In addition to a single release that will be the first Booka Shade vs. M.A.N.D.Y. cooperation to be heard in years, the boys have closed on a revolutionary touring show that utilizes infrared technology and a new mapping technique to project inverted video effects onto their Physical form as they perform. It is no doubt that their plans for this never before seen live visual component will conjure the kind of visceral excitement that only this duo can. In the feat of the imagination, M.A.N.D.Y. powers on through a perpetual rebirth into pulsating beats and Pretty Lights.

Mexican-born Sandra Borrego Mariana Robles, aka Mariana BO, has a unique set-up in her live performances, combining her skills on the violin with electronic music. Having learnt to play the instrument classically in her youth, she often brings this musicianship into her DJ sets — on stage she’s played alongside the likes of David Guetta, NERVO, and Tiësto to name a few. The last few years have seen her take the stage worldwide playing at Tomorrowland, Ultra Europe, and various festivals in her native Mexico including EDC Festival, Electric Planet, Holi Festival, and Mayan Madness in Tulum. Her productions encompass various styles including big room, psytrance and dubstep to hardstyle and bass house. Notable releases this year include her singles ‘Feeling Good’, ‘Queen Of The Desert’ and ‘Mariachi’ — and there’s more to come. She’s also focusing more deeply on music that’s not just EDM — she’s been experimenting with new sounds and projects such as creating soundtracks for brands or short films.

  • MARKUS SCHULZ

Introduction: Over the last 10 years Markus Schulz has fused the individual musical identities of progressive house & trance into his own creative, inimitable hybrid sound. Through the unique alignment of his headline DJ sets, Coldharbour label output and highly prominent Global DJ Broadcast show, he orchestrated a sea change revolution in the US trance scene – one that has gone on to have its sound influence sweep to the farthest reaches of the globe. This success has been singularly reflected in weekly headliner sets in front of many tens of thousands, a GDJB radio show listenership up in the tens of millions & one Beatport chart-topping release after another. Following several highly ranked positions in 2008 Shultz punched his way into the Top 10 of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 chart, landing at no.8. In repeating the exact same achievement in 2009, he now stands, quite unequivocally, as America’s no.1 club DJ.,Early History: Born in Eschwege, central Germany, Markus emigrated to the United States. Age 13, Markus’ dance music awakening came during the grip of the country’s then-exploding breakdance scene. His early production and DJ career roughly tracked that of the 2nd Stateside coming of House and he caught his first production break in 1993 when he remixed Sagat’s ‘Why Is It? (F** Dat)’ for Pete Tongs FFrr label. Markus’ freshman production release followed in 1994 with the 6-track-strong ‘Plastik Trax EP Vol 1’. Throughout the mid to late Nineties he continued to pull in early acclaim with a range of releases on numerous US luminary labels. In 1998 he recorded ‘You Won’t See Me Cry’ for Plastik Records (his first label), a release which was picked up by Eve Records for the UK. This became Markus’ first international calling card… the world had started to tune in.,Markus Schulz – The DJ: Through his natural audience affinity, flawless (and seemingly effortless) mixing and innate tune selection, he has wowed crowds in pretty much every major district, principality and metropolis. Schulz’s DJ career has, to the greater degree, run parallel to that of his productions. In the early Noughties, having fixed focus on the hinterland between trance & progressive, he began to reach audiences further and further afield. In 2004 he was signed to the David Lewis Productions agency (also home of the World’s No.1 DJ Armin Van Buuren) and his career took another big step forward. Now a regular fixture at the world’s biggest & most famous clubs, arenas and festivals, he lays down his unique trance-progressive vision on a weekly basis. In Europe, he’s smashed Trance Energy, Nature One & Dance Valley, worked tent-pegs loose at Creamfields & Global Gathering and brought gridlock to the Love Parade. Stateside the colossal Electric Daisy & Ultra Festivals have both felt the Schulz pressure and yet further afield still he’s induced floor upheaval in China and Australia (most recently at the Future Music Festival). After several significant showings in the Top 100 DJs chart, he now ranks as one of the top 10 DJs in the world and in 2008 was voted Best American DJ at the International Dance Music Awards.,Coldharbour Recordings: Schulz’s sound notably came quickest to the ears of continental European DJs. Following the formation of the Armada group in 2005, Armin sought Markus out and asked him to start compiling tracks for a new vinyl series. The Coldharbour Sessions EPs launched in 2004 (with the first 3 releases coming out on the already established Electronic Elements label). In quick succession they began to leave crater-like impacts on dancefloors and within 12 months Coldharbour the label was born. Named after Markus’ then-production base in London’s Coldharbour Lane, its output immediately brought a new fission sound to Armada. It also became a lightning rod for a new generation of prog-inclined producers – setting in motion the careers of (amongst others) Santiago Nino, Probspot, Mark Otten & Niklas Harding. With 2005 under the spell of Coldharbour’s more sophisticated, minimal, but still melodic take on the prog-trance sound, Markus struck again with the first Coldharbour Sessions mix compilation. Such has been the success of the imprint that in 2007 it was joined by a sub-label, Coldharbour Red. This, in turn, was a launch pad for Marcus Schössow, tyDi, Glenn Morrison & Evol Waves and was the point of re-entry for early Schulz side-project, Dakota (see Dakota section below). Six years after its birth, in 2010, Coldharbour stands at the top tier of the world’s trance & progressive labels and has reached the threshold of its 100th release.,M.S. Productions 2005 – 2010: Perfectly intersecting the quality/quantity axis, Markus’ own productions have been the most fundamental of components in marshalling clubbers and music lovers to his sound. Over the course of the last half-decade tracks like ‘First Time’ & ‘Without You Near’ (2005), ‘Fly To Colours’, ‘Never Be The Same’ & ‘I Am’ (2007) ‘Perfect’ & ‘Cause You Know’ (2008) & most recently ‘The New World’ & ‘Do You Dream’ have each played their vital part. Markus is also a keen production collaborator. In 2005 he famously teamed up with likeminded producers Gabriel & Dresden and Departure for ‘Without You Near’ and in mid-2008 did the same with Andy Moor on ‘Daydream’. The impact of all the singles has been cauterized by his studio albums ‘Without You Near’ (2005) & ‘Progression’ (2007). Schulz is currently recording his third long-player, which is scheduled for release between Qs 2&3, 2010.,The Global DJ Broadcast show: Now in its fifth year Schulz’s GDJB has continued to be a beacon for an always-growing throng of trance & progressive dance fans. Broadcast through leading station DI.fm and Sirius/XM satellite, the Global DJ Broadcast site and 50+ other FM & internet stations around the planet, it has become every bit required listening for the EDM-savvy. Based on a regular format, the first show of each month is a two hour long mix from one of Schulz’s rolling World Tour gigs – ones that have of late included Medellin, Columbia, St Petersberg, Russia & Amnesia in Ibiza. Subsequent shows in the month feature Markus mixing his broad-span pick of the current electronic dance music best for an hour (which includes the forum-voted Global Selection track of the week) followed by guest mixes from both established and up-and-coming DJs.,Markus Schulz – The City Albums: Markus is also responsible for one of the longest running and most respected compilation album series in trance/electronic dance history. Kicking off in 2005 in Miami, its city-hopping concept has gone on to spotlight Ibiza in ’06, Amsterdam in ’08 and Toronto in ’09. Providing a microcosmic view of his now instantly recognisable sound, they have become cornerstones for fans CD & mp3 collections, with each new travelogue edition bringing in a fresh wave of supporters. Notably, the Amsterdam ’08 release was nominated for an IDMA award for Best Full Length DJ Mix (in the same year that Markus took home the trophy for Best American DJ).,Remixes: Markus powered into remix action in the early 90s with a 30+ volley of high-profile reworks. Over the course of the decade he re-tooled the production works of Euro dominators like The Real McCoy & Technotronic, house masters & divas Armand Van Helden & Liz Torres, legendary Nineties icons RuPaul, Bette Midler & Sandra Bernhard and fully-fledged A-listers like Madonna. As the Millennium arrived though he began to work on deeper, more intrinsically electronic dance fare… In 2000 he remixed trance innovator Pablo Gargano’s ‘Absolution’, PQM’s Renaissance classic ‘The Flying Song’ and Fatboy Slims ‘Sunset (Bird of Prey). Satisfied that he’d found the right dance strata to focus on Markus has gone on to rewire tracks by Oceanlab, Motorcycle, Dance 2 Trance, Cosmic Gate, Nalin & Kane, Kyau & Albert, John O’Callaghan, & Space Manoeuvres amongst many, many others.,Markus Schulz aka: Dakota: Markus has only made rare use of pseudonyms through his career – seeing them as being only valuable if they represent an outlet for something other than his ‘regular’ output. At the turn of the last decade Schulz released 3 tracks (‘Swirl’, ‘Frozen’ & ‘Lost in Brixton’) under the moniker Dakota. Over time these became focal points for the year-on-year exponential intake of new fans. In 2009 Schulz paid dividend to that by resurrecting the guise, updating its sound and directed his attentions on a whole album of new Dakota material. ‘Thoughts Become Things’ was the end product and with it came a route diversion that went into a new valley-deep sound – one that expanded to embrace the fringes of techno, house and other sub-genres. It once again fortified the Schulz’s fanbase and expanded the range of DJ support for his music. The album has thus far justified 7 single releases that have included particular fan-favourites ‘Chinook’, ‘Johnny the Fox’, ‘Koolhaus’ & ‘Mr Cappuccino’.,Prepared by Tim Stark.

Rarely have we seen someone rise through the ranks as quickly as 21 year old Boris Daenen, a.k.a Netsky. Having a Belgian passport doesn’t often turn D+B heads, so you can be sure it’s his tunes which do the talking. Having secured releases on some of the biggest labels in the scene, gained DJ support from the likes of Friction, Hype, Fabio and London Elektricity, the young Belgian from Edegem near Antwerp earned a nomination as “Best Upcoming Producer” at the Drum + Bass Arena Awards in 2008 and fulfilled this ambition two years on with is “Best Newcomer Producer” award in 2010.,Leading a wave of new skool D+B talent from Europe with his blend of uplifting, melancholic melodies and heavy dancefloor bass + beats, Netsky’s popularity as both a DJ and producer is second to none.,He first came to Hospital’s attention with ‘Smile’ and was quickly snapped up, signing exclusively to Hospital in late 2009. Netsky’s first release on Hospital was the iconic ‘Memory Lane’ (featured on Sick Music 2 in 2010) and this was swiftly followed up by his chart topping debut album – ‘Netsky’ – in May of the same year. Following virtually unanimous praise and hype from all corners of the globe, it plunged Netsky firmly into the limelight, where he has remained ever since, delivering a potent mix of dancefloor anthems, vocal led classics and clean cut new jungle sound which has become his trademark.,Since then, Netsky’s profile as a remixer has been affirmed by his huge remixes of ubiquitous anthems such as Pendulum – ‘Witchcraft’, Plan B, Leftfield – ‘Release The Pressure’, Audio Bullies – ‘Only Man’ and Swedish House Mafia – ‘One’.,Alongside this, is Netsky’s hectic DJ schedule which regularly takes him across Europe, the UK and around the world. His skills behind the decks are enviable and he seems to have a Midas touch; able to transform even the most subdued of arties into an ecstatic, bouncing rave within a matter of minutes and it is no coincidence that he was nominated for the Radio One ‘Essential Mix Of The Year’ last year. With more big plans lined up and work towards a new album underway, 2011 will is looking to be another golden year for Belgium’s premium D+B export.

  • PAUL KALKBRENNER

Even though reality shows have been trying to prove otherwise, a successful career as a musician, even as a pop star, cannot be forced with a pre-packaged crash course. As of 2010, Paul Kalkbrenner has tallied up more than 15 years of experience as a producer and live act, all the while learning what it means to go purposefully from one step to the next. When the Berlin Wall fell, he was 12. The soundtrack of his youth, and of the majority of his generation, was still in its infancy, awaiting its breakthrough: techno music.,The fall of the wall meant reunification, but above all, a sense of no holds barred. The eastern part of the city became the anarchic, creative playground for a euphoric youth, now freed from bureaucracy. The early 90s were formative years for a young Paul Kalkbrenner as well. Eventually, in one of many long and sleepless nights on the dancefloors of E-Werk, Planet and Whale, the dream was born to make music himself, and anything less important would be put aside. A job as TV editor got him through the mid-90s and financed his first music gear. By this point Paul had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people’s records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks were released in 1999 on Berlin-based BPitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city’s east. A series of further singles and two full-lengths (Superimpose and Time) followed, plus continuous live performances that threatened to shatter the grid of his calendar.,Together with Paul Kalkbrenner, BPitch Control gained a strong momentum. Interviews in respected German magazines like Spex and De:Bug paved the way for regular international bookings. The Lufthansa fetishist had now become a frequent flyer. Paul’s third album Self (2004) would mark the beginning of a new era. His melodic sound, with its affinity for grand emotional gestures, obeyed the logic of the dancefloor, but Self introduced a narrative aesthetic, serving as a soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist (at least, not yet…). It was Paul’s most musical and mature album to date, although still taking cues from the dancefloor and rave culture, offering a first glimpse of what was yet to come. "Gebrünn Gebrünn”, released one year later, became a crossover hit found in every DJ’s record bag and finally cemented Paul’s status as a Techno MVP.,In early 2006, German director Hannes Stöhr, an avid fan of Self, decided to get in contact with Kalkbrenner. His idea was to produce a film about a musician in Techno City during the new millennium, and Paul would compose the soundtrack. The two met, traded ideas and experiences, and soon after began working on the screenplay’s first draft. In the course of their exchange, Hannes had the realization that Paul should not just contribute the music, but that he would be the perfect choice as the film’s star. Without hesitation, Paul accepted the offer. They decided to title the film Berlin Calling. For the soundtrack’s production, Paul and his friend (and BPitch colleague) Sascha Funke spent half a year in Cézanne’s hometown of Aix-En-Provence in southern France.,Unencumbered by the cold, gray Berlin winter, Paul devoted himself entirely to the musical aspect of the project. One song already had a title: “Sky and Sand” with vocals by Paul’s brother Fritz. Upon Paul’s return to Berlin in 2007, the filming began, and the finished work was brought to German theaters in October 2008. Berlin Calling and Paul’s debut acting performance received positive reviews, and the film, thanks to its authentic depiction of the Berlin club scene and drug culture, became, slowly but surely, a cult classic.,The soundtrack and especially the single “Sky and Sand” broke all sales records. That track in particular went gold in Belgium where it remained in the charts’ Top Ten for weeks. The 2009 DVD release of the film brought Paul to a new, much larger audience around the world. By the end of the year, Paul separated with BPitch Control after a decade-long relationship to take the next steps of his career alone. In early 2010 Paul completed a twelve-city live concert tour throughout Europe (with over 50,000 tickets sold within just a few weeks), followed by many headlining appearances at summer festivals. More tours and new challenges await him.

One of German dance music’s most commercially successful artists, Robin Schulz’s productions have notched up hundreds of gold and platinum sales awards. He became an overnight sensation when he scored an international smash hit with his very first commercial release, a lush remix of "Waves" by Dutch rapper Mr. Probz. It hit number one in six European countries and number three in six more, and his follow-up, a club-ready remix of French indie pop duo Lilly Wood & the Prick's "Prayer in C," was even more successful, going to number one in ten European countries. Born on April 28, 1987, in Osnabrück, he began DJing at the tender age of 17, influenced by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Armand Van Helden, and Tiësto. By 20, he had his own club night, which he ran for two years before the yen to make his own music led him into production. Schulz experimented for several years before uploading his tracks to YouTube, where his melodic, bouncy pop-house sound earned him millions of views. ~ AllMusic

  • SCOOTER

Of course, the band’s route to success was not quite as simple as frontman H.P. Baxxter describes. Scooter have indeed worked hard on their career and – we should not forget – they have now been in the business for over ten years. The former techno trio, who fought their way through the discotheques with “Hyper Hyper”, has developed into a serious band that now fills arenas with 80,000 people, has sold over ten million records and whose list of gold and platinum discs just seems to be endless.,Did anyone expect this back in 1994 when the band was formed in its original line-up? H.P. Baxxter, Rick J. Jordan, Ferris Bueller and, not least, manager and label boss Jens Thele started small: The trio’s debut “Hyper Hyper” went straight into the charts – and was immediately passed off as a one-hit wonder. However, the critics and journalists spoke far too soon. The follow-up hits like “Move Your Ass”, “Friends”, “Endless Summer”and “Back In The UK” were all just as successful. Anyone who believed that Scooter just wanted ride on the wave of their first hit were very wrong. Fun was and is the driving force behind the trio, by far more than the pressure to succeed and live up to expectations.,This explains the phenomenon of Scooter seeming to re-invent themselves for almost every single. Constantly combining styles that others would strictly separate, H.P., Rick and Ferris employ their unbelievable creativity with a healthy portion of humour and irony. The result is electronic ballads, eighties-style electro tracks, melancholic songs like “No Fate” or “She’s The Sun” and the legendary techno rock monster “Fire” (1997), which still sends H.P.’s “Flying V” guitar up in flames each night on stage. New member Axel Coon also felt this when he replaced Ferris Bueller in 1997, as did his successor Jay Frog, who is still a permanent member of the trio today.,All band members have their own special roles: H.P. still writes all of the lyrics while Rick and Jay are busy with the playbacks in the studio. To keep Scooter’s hand in club scene, Jay has taken over the role of DJ and also mixes a set for the Kontor Radio Show every other week. Jens Thele, the man behind the scenes, is responsible for anything to do with organisation and Logistics. He is also the one to ensure the band gets back on track after any disputes.,If it wasn’t for this work distribution, Scooter would very probably not be where they are today. Twenty-eight singles and thirteen albums clearly show that Scooter are a lot more than just a project. All critics and doubters will have had to admit that by now too.,Scooter’s new single “Shake That!” sees the band take a brave step by placing H.P.’s shouts over pumping disco house music. This courage has also already been rewarded: “Shake That!” entered the charts at number eight – incidentally making it their seventh Top Ten entry in succession!,Scooter are now about to bring out their fourteenth album. And “Mind The Gap” has many new features to offer: The album will be sold in three different price categories for the first time. In addition to the basic version, which just consists of the simple disc (EUR 9.99), there is also a regular version (EUR 14.99) with a booklet, bonus tracks, video, a making of, photos and interview, as well as a deluxe edition (EUR18.99). The latter contains all the features of the regular version plus a bonus CD with eleven live tracks from the “We Like It Loud Tour 2004”.
