Review #5: Can You Even from Bicycle Corporation

Bicycle Corporation’s release on Taipei-based Our Muzik Records, Can You Even, is a solid offering. The dense rhythms of the title track gradually introduce new elements but remain fairly consistent on the whole, maintaining a similar level of energy throughout. The track is an effective one for wherever you fit it into a set.

Jon Connor’s remix of Can You Even takes things in a harder direction, boosting the drums, and adding a gradual increase in pace as the track goes on. Elements are adjusted as the track goes on, maintaining some variation in the rhythm. Overall, the sound is very similar to those found in the UK scene in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Virus D.D.D. remix is the most textured of the versions of the song that appear on the release. The minor key is brought out stronger compared to the other two versions, while shifting drum interludes keep the track fresh and interesting.

As might not be surprising, seeing as Our Muzik is the project of Taipei-based Italian producer Giorgio Leone, the EP draws from a number of Italian producers. This includes Bicycle Corporation themselves, an Italian producer duo, as well as Virus D.D.D. Jon Connor was previously Taipei-based until recently, due to his work as an offshore wind engineer at a time in which Taiwan is seeking to boost wind power. The EP generally proves a consistent one.
