Solid, Firmly Rooted Techno with “Optical”

Frankey & Sandrino’s new release on Crosstown Rebels, “Optical”, is solid, firmly rooted techno.

With a mid-range tempo that is not too fast or too slow, the title track keeps it together with integrated rhythms that never drift far from each other. Though not exactly a banger, the track builds a sense of anticipation. The dissonant noises used in the background of the track are arguably what make it, providing much room for DJs to add their own spin to the track through the use of effects. The breakdown is not overly long either, allowing for a sustained sense of momentum.

The same can be said of the second track, “Gridd,” which is similar. More restrained, the track maintains a steady beat while gradually adding elements. This never strays too far from where the track starts, with the track still maintaining a preciseness to it, rather than elevating itself to any rhythmic heights or accelerating pace.

“Optical” may avoid the bangers, but the two songs that comprise it are well-grounded in a DJs toolkit. “Gridd” may be useful for more relaxed settings, while still creating a vibrant club atmosphere, while “Optical” would infuse more energy into settings where it is played.
