  • Special Request

Special Request is the new rugged alias for house and techno stalwart Paul Woolford. Inspired by the unruly conventions of UK pirate radio stations, this project captures the raw energy and diversity of the illegal airwaves and uses this as a springboard of inspiration for a series of heavyweight productions that span from murky house through darkside techno to chaotic eye-of-the-storm hardcore/jungle tear-outs. The end results are incendiary.

  • Amaliah

̸BIOGRAPHY Amaliah is a London based DJ and producer with an eclectic taste in sound. She also runs her own label, 'Borne Fruits'. Borne Fruits boss and Rinse FM staple Amaliah commands the rave as one of London’s most exciting artists, hybridizing modern house and techno sounds with global club cuts rooted in a love of soundsystem culture. Emerging from a lineage of inspired ravers immersed in the wide-eyed rush of dubstep’s golden era at Plastic People and London’s vibrant soundsystem culture, Amaliah has transcended these proud influences to stake her own inimitable claim within her native city’s ever-crowded clubbing landscape. Her DJ sets are signified by a purposeful energy informed by years of raving, where she unleashes anything from prog-laden house cuts alongside tribal techno pumpers before diving headfirst into percussive bass warpers and beyond. Crucially, these eclectic club styles sing harmoniously under her exhilarating party stewardship, exposing years of record digging and a general obsession with electronic music. This is exhibited with an impressive archive of mixes for the likes of Boiler Room, Crack Magazine, Hör and a much-loved Rinse FM residency, while also in standout sets at venerable institutions Panorama Bar, De School and Fabric and at festivals like Glastonbury, Love International, Gala and Waterworks. 2019 saw Amaliah establish Borne Fruits, a party collective-turned-label where she made her production debut with Borne Fruits 001 before a further various artists compilation release Club Entry Vol. 1 and an 2 track edits single with venerable Derry hero Or:la titled Y2SLAY followed to great acclaim. More solo productions of hers have dropped since on Earful Of Wax and her own imprint, characterized by driving and playful percussion and an unadulterated raver’s energy built for maximum club impact. This exciting year ahead sees Amaliah joining the Hessle Audio trio at Glastonbury for their The Wow stage takeover, making her debut at Draaimolen Festival and hosting a boat party at Love International as well as a b2b with Aletha at the festival's The Garden Stage. Her label and own productions continue apace too, with a forthcoming bumper-packed Borne Fruits compilation and a highly anticipated full solo debut EP prepped for the end of this year; all of this proving her boundless talent reaching unfathomable heights over the coming months.

Growing up Mexican in Los Angeles, Bianca Oblivion was surrounded by the sounds of backyard parties and car stereos blasting everything from gangster rap and freestyle to cumbias and hard house. She trained as a dancer throughout her childhood and teen years, drawn to African, Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian dance forms. As a young adult she frequented the LA club scene during the height of electro and blog house, where she first got her start DJing. Her sets reflect all these influences, as her sound draws from styles across the house, club, and global bass spectrum. Her Club Aerobics Radio show on NTS and her guest mixes for Diplo & Friends, Beats1, and Rinse France have showcased Bianca’s talents behind the decks. Her debut single “Bumbum Pra Cá” continues this fusion of genres, drawing from baile funk and classic grime. • Charisse C

̸BIOGRAPHY DJ, Artist, founder of Abantu, one half of The Ascension & NTS Resident, Charisse C draws her selections from her experience of existing between worlds. Rooted in her Zimbabwean and South African heritage, raised in the UK; her taste is curious, soulful and bass-heavy, with a playful and intentional demeanour. Spearheading South Africa's electronic soundscape, including, now global giants, Amapiano and Gqom; she describes herself as both a vessel and storyteller. Previously a Music Journalist, Charisse C's live performances and curated events are all part of an ever-evolving expression of chosen mediums. The multifaceted tastemaker has played a wide span of shows from from Fabric to KOKO, Village Underground, Corsica and Werkhaus, to cultural venues like the London Design Biennale at Somerset House, the Tate Modern & the V&A Museum. Charisse C’s mixes can be found on Boiler Room, BBC Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, NTS and No Signal Radio. In the spring of 2021, Charisse C met collaborator Koek Sista; fresh from their stellar Boiler Room, headline Southbank Centre, Tate Modern and Fabric London performances, together, they launched 'The Ascension': an immersive live experiment that combines Charisse C’s bass-heavy selections and Koek Sista’s magnetic sound art, to turn every dance floor into a gravitational and unforgettable experience. The pair sit at the vanguard of a new imagining of electronic music from the African continent; connecting their individual experiences of cultural hybrids to form a live, artistic expression that is both rooted and out of this world. AMAKA describes "the heart of The Ascension" as "a form of sonic care work where two Black women honour the sounds of their home and use music to uplift collective energy." “South African’s club experiments have rightly been held up as some of the best things to have happened to our dance floors. As Abantu boss Charisse C showed us in her debut sessions for NTS, there’s plenty more to [South Africa’s] thriving and constantly-evolving club culture,” writes Trench Magazine. Known for the stellar curation of #AbantuNoSignal; a bi-weekly show dedicated to representing the vastness of Southern Africa, with a combined effort of music and storytelling. Starting with the two places she calls home; Zimbabwe and South Africa, the show has since branched out to reach Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique and the like. Abantu, which translates to “people” in several Nguni languages, is cultivating an international community whilst building an archival legacy. The show features interviews, guest-mixes and the #AbantuArtists segment, which spotlights artists across electronic, hip-hop and soul music. The show aims to be inclusive of all that Southern Africa has to offer; not limited to its commercial successes, bridging gaps between genres and cultures alike. An off-shoot of the No Signal show, is the #AbantuPod which fills the gap for more in-depth conversations about the people, cultures and social issues surrounding the music. On June 4th 2022, Abantu hosted its first party, curated by headlining DJ, Charisse C. The Abantu dance floor is a dance floor of freedom and discovery. Where you can experience Amapiano, and its adjacent genres, situated in the heart of electronic dance music in London and beyond. An exploration of the intersections between the genres and cultures, that have shaped Charisse C into the eclectic tastemaker she is today. • Christian Löffler

Being asked to describe his own music, Christian Löffler states that he tries to combine melancholy with euphoria. „All my music is connected by a gloomy spirit, which is minted by a warm sincerity. I try to merge all kinds of different acoustic colors to obtain this feeling in my music.” Löffler started to play music by the age of 14. Living in a secluded region, lacking a musical surrounding, he had to teach himself the essentials of making electronic music. Before long he developed his own deep and moving sound, colored with a melancholic undertone- Music for the soul & for the body. He recalls a variety of music styles he listened to as a child and teenager that were highly influential to his own development as a musician. Due to the fact that Löffler is also working as a visual artist, he’s following the same approach when making music that he’s following when painting or taking photos. It is more about telling a story than making everything accessible right from the start. In the course of the production of EP’s like „Heights”, „Raise” and „Aspen”, Löffler developed some strategies to use acoustic material in his music. Amongst others he samples different stringed instruments, percussion and atmospheres. He continues working with the recordings on the computer, combining, layering and alternating them. For his debut album „A Forest“ he enriched his sound collages by co-working with singers like Gry and Mohna. An Album in the spirit of the enchanting woods of his home region. The extraordinary capacities of this young producer have kept eyes and ears closely following the fresh talent as Löffler’s deep moving melancholic sound, is absolutely irresistible. In 2014 the highly acclaimed „Young Alaska“ EP is setting the stage for his second studio album to be released in Winter 2014/15.

  • Delano Smith

̸BIOGRAPHY Detroit | Mixmode | Sushitech Of the original crop of Detroit DJs, Delano Smith is one of the few still dedicated to the craft. Reflecting on house and techno without his influence would reveal a very different musical landscape today. Coming up when the world was just discovering the impact a DJ could have, Delano traversed his way to the top in a tough scene full of talent. Although dance music post The Belleville Three and Underground Resistance is well documented, the context that set the tone for them to emerge is less so. At a time described as the Wild West by some, when party culture was taking its first tentative steps, Delano honed his skills under the the guidance of the late, great Ken Collier. With initial sets fusing soul, disco and early electronic sounds, Delano planted seeds in the minds of Detroit’s subsequent generations. Those dancing to his sets in the late 70s and early 80s would later become ambassadors of a scene with worldwide appeal. Now, Delano stands shoulder to shoulder with the figureheads he once educated, writing a brand new chapter for house and techno. Delano’s story is long and intriguing, first taking to the decks in friends’ basements, these weekend sessions turned into the dance hall parties that paved the way for Delano’s residencies at clubs across Detroit. Championing permutations of the post-Disco era, a sound described by the D’s luminaries as “progressive” before house and techno were officially coined, Delano began to receive bookings beyond his home state, eventually touring what would become a familiar axis between the US and Europe. Following a period out of the game, Delano returned with a new focus, forming the DJ collective BeatDownSounds with long-time peers Norm Talley and Mike "Agent X" Clark. The trio offered a unique, slowed down and raw take on house, a sound picked up by London/Tokyo label, Third Ear Records, and presented on the double-length compilation ‘Detroit BeatDown Vol.1’, the success of which enabled Delano and his partners to represent the Motor City on an international level. Comparatively late to production, Delano started releasing his own music in earnest from 2002 onwards, finding homes on esteemed underground labels and of course on his own Mixmode imprint. In 2009 Delano formed a pivotal relationship with the Berlin based Sushitech Records, following a chance meeting with label head Yossi Amoyal, the setting Panorama Bar, a club that would later help define Delano’s musical direction. After a string of successful Sushitech EPs, Delano dropped ‘Odyssey’ onto the scene’s collective consciousness, an album spawning enduring dancefloor favourites. Two years later his sophomore long player arrived, loaded with dark and dubby material ‘Twilight’ was a curve ball to follow the hysteria that greeted his debut. 2017 saw Delano add yet another Sushitech LP to his discography, entitled ‘Detroit Lost Tapes’ it offered archived material, dug out and recontextualised with a worldwide tour following in support.

̸ BIOGRAPHY Record connoisseur, label boss, and sleight-of-hand specialist – Dr. B promises a rabbit-hole record bag, labrador-like energy, and a light-hearted, left-field approach to the dance. Dr.B’s roots are in UKG, growing a globally-recognised label slinging out toasty cuts from new producers and re-issues from the golden era, but this is just a slither of the London-born DJ’s eclectic collection. You only need to flick through his recent bumper to bumpers to see how far and wide he can go. Whether it’s meaty chunks of electro, techno, and minimal with Evan Baggs, cross-genre party starters alongside Bradley Zero, straight shellers with Interplanetary Criminal, or just throwing it down alone, he’ll bring a bag of belters whatever the weather, wherever the crowd. After establishing himself as one of the UK’s most in-demand selectors, the London-born DJ has taken operations worldwide. From the floating intimacy of Berlin’s Hoppetosse to the sheer scale of Glastonbury, Fabric’s brutal brickwork to the iconic caverns of Kiev’s Art Club Closer and Mkvtvarse in Georgia – local, national, and global venues are the workshops for Dr. B’s versatile trotters. • Elijah and Skilliam

̸BIOGRAPHY Founders of Butterz. Having appeared weekly on London’s pioneering radio station Rinse FM for six years, from 2008 - 2014, Elijah & Skilliam have remained a highly visible and wholly accessible outlet for grime music for the entirety of that time and beyond. The DJ duo’s open source approach to their Butterz operation has already yielded a FABRICLIVE residency, three critically acclaimed mix CDs (Rinse: 17, FABRICLIVE 75 and Grime 2015) and a slew of other well attended national and regional club nights (JAMZCLUB) alongside major festival stage takeovers. Simply put, Elijah & Skilliam exist to represent grime music to the fullest and their extended DJ sets reflect that fact wonderfully, drawing as much from the talents of their in-house artists: Swindle, Royal-T and Flava D as they do from the music’s foundational early pioneers. The pair’s relentless hard work has managed to amass the kind of respect from grime’s originators that’s enabled them to properly harness the talents of artists like JME, Newham Generals and P Money on records via their label and present explosive performances from emcees like Wiley, Skepta and Kano in the live arena. The fact that they’ve managed to do all that whilst still booking blossoming production talent like Wen, Kahn & Neek and Murlo says a lot about their underlying enthusiasm for the music and the kind of attention to detail that’s seen them run well over 50 parties in the last two years alone. Representing the entire spectrum of grime, Elijah & Skilliam and their Butterz imprint have, at times, gleefully shifted focus. At first shining a light on the unsung producers they expanded their operation to incorporate emcees, then a team of in house artists and now, Swindle’s impressive full live band. The label has capably grown in scope alongside their collective ambitions and with their achievements consistently opening doors to new territories and possibilities it’s no surprise that their current developments have seen them touring the US and Asia whilst they’ve been incubating club nights in Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Berlin and London. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Rinse:17 - Elijah & Skilliam - Rinse Fabriclive75 - Elijah & Skilliam - Fabric Grime 2015 - Elijah & Skilliam - Butterz Grime 2016 - Elijah & Skilliam - Butterz Grime 2017 - Elijah & Skilliam - Butterz

  • Elkka

̸BIOGRAPHY Elkka’s deep intuition is the unifying thread throughout Cardiff-born DJ and producer’s illustrious career. Vibrant releases for Local Action, Ninja Tune and her own label and party, femme culture, have marked her as an unstoppable force within the London underground. This recognition metabolised when she was awarded BBC’s prestigious Essential Mix of the Year in 2021, spotlighting her radiant blend of classic house, breakbeat and experimental electronica to the world over. As the next curator of DJ-Kicks, Elkka is voyaging through rave euphoria. “This is a really special moment for me because DJ-Kicks has been a formative part of my musical education,” she says. An intoxicating journey through Chicago house and disco, leftfield techno, UK bass and electro-punk, Elkka conjures up an atmosphere that is as primed for the club as it is the listener’s interior world. Elkka’s spellbinding DJ-Kicks mix starts with a simple whispered phrase: “Attention, lovers.” As ethereal synths gently undulate out of view, the life-affirming stomp of Shade’s 1978 disco classic Music Is the Only Way (I Can Communicate) comes into sharp focus. “I use track titles to communicate feelings. Often, I can’t verbally express how I feel, but through music, I can,” Elkka smiles. Specially-commissioned originals from artists Elkka admires inject a revitalising power into the mix. Pioneering experimental producer Herbert’s Keep Time (Nobody) is a percussive sound collage helmed by a supernatural, pitch-shifted pop vocal. “The vocals in it sound like Britney or Timbaland, who I obsessed over growing up. To have Herbert involved is like all my worlds in the naughties colliding at once.” London producer Breaka’s Like Water to a Fish deploys d’n’b breaks over a syncopated synthline, whereas Villager’s Monocyclical invokes the bursting energy of its title, acid 303 bass swirling bouncing around a driving 4/4 beat. Elkka’s own exclusive DJ-Kicks contributions further this magpie-like approach, and uncannily ring out like sister tracks. Hands’ lead synth melody and rolling hi-hat is gloriously uplifting, summoning the euphoric physicality of its title. Body is darker, heads-down cut, its chuggy percussion eliciting movement that can only be found in the dance. “You need both sides to everything. I wanted to write music that moves you and instantly evokes feeling. I’ve never connected with music that feels sonically ‘cold’ to me. That's not to say that warmth is always joyful, either – warmth can be anything that pulls you in, making you feel a connection.”
This sense of intimacy permeates Elkka’s DJ-Kicks mix. “You have to just trust your own feelings. That’s exactly how I do everything – making sure that my music has my DNA in it and I feel connected to it,” she asserts. This intuitive practice also embodies a message of self-acceptance and community building for the LGBTQ+ community and women, both groups that she has championed since the start of her career: the rapturous trance of Carli’s Lights & Strobes thrust us into peak-time, while Australian producer’s Surusinghe’s Bad Girls is a fast and unexpected ride through UK bass. “Women’s voices and queer voices are very important to me. They always find their way into everything I do really naturally,” she says. Above all, this is a brightly-hued universe for you to get lost in; a portrait of joy and connection, set to the heady sounds of Elkka’s making. “I wanted to make something that was euphoric and celebratory,” she beams, “of everything I love.”

  • LSB

̸BIOGRAPHY Melancholic Drum and Bass made by some guy from Essex From Mixmag 2015 If there's one drum 'n' bass producer you should get accustomed with this year, it's LSB. His productions are super smooth rollers and his deck selection's always on point. Just check 'The View' (featuring Tyler Daley's vocals) from DRS' recent album on Marcus Intalex's Soul:r label for proof. LSB produced it and the sumptuous piano keys and swift clap drums have become a mainstay in d'n'b sets in the last six months. He didn't just walk into contributing towards a hit, though. 2007 was his debut year - releasing 'The Eleventh Hour' on Deep Soul Music - before further releases on Swiss label Demand Records, Spearhead (home to liquid beauty 'Overthinking'), Integral Records with Technimatic collaboration 'Rotary Motion'/'Serendipity' and Hospital. "I certainly don't think of myself as anywhere near established," he says. "I've been releasing tunes since 2007, I didn't just come straight in and blow up with my early tunes. Because it's taken so long I'm not really aware of any status I hold." He might be modest about his status, but signing two releases to Intalex's label (after hooking up through a round of golf) within the space of 12 months doesn't come easy. Soul:r is where he's really upped a level, first with the bumpin' jazz of 'Leave' and secondly with the 'Fourfit EP 03', out on May 18, featuring the spine-tingling 'Walking Blues' and snappy 'Mist Of You'. Plus, there's tons to learn from someone who's been in the game for so long. "Marcus gets stuff arranged early and his ideas become tunes very early on. That was a bit alien to me but I've learnt to get into the headspace of writing tracks, not just sketching loops." There's plenty more to come this year, with another EP on Spearhead, remixes for Lenzman and Kove and a collaboration penned in with Etherwood. You won't be getting that debut LP anytime soon, though. "If it happens, it happens. I don't just want to bundle the next 12 tunes I write and say 'this is an album'. That's not an album for me, it's more a marketing exercise." ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY About tonight EP - Spearhead 2016 Fourfit EP - Soul:r 2015 If you're Here - Hospital Records 2015 XLRS - Shogun Audio 2015 Overthinking EP - Spearhead Records 2013

  • Palms Trax

Palms Trax is a producer and Dj based in Berlin, Germany. His first record was released in October of 2013 on London-based imprint Lobster Theremin. For aspiring DJs and producers, or indeed anyone who appreciates a good story, the genesis of Palms Trax couldn’t have read any dreamier. You know the one; curious yet naive son of the English Riviera lands a job at one of London’s leading record stores and discovers the masters of Chicago house and Detroit techno. Later, stumbling around Berlin, his primitive attempts to emulate the sound of his newfound heroes accidentally land him a bona fide dance floor hit. A gradual but steady stream of EPs courtesy of Dutch dance music powerhouse Dekmantel have allowed his productions to blossom in richer, smoother directions. On 2015’s ‘In Gold’ EP, and throughout the following year’s ‘High Point on Low Ground’, halcyon hallmarks of house - euphoric piano lines, bubbling acid and luminescent keys - are shot through with Donaldson’s tough, distinctive percussion. It’s that same connection with Dekmantel that has encouraged Donaldson to quickly, impressively evolve as a DJ of some distinctive taste and talent. A memorable performance at Dekmantel’s flagship Amsterdam festival in 2015 captured open hearts, lost minds and aching feet. Since then, the sound of Palms Trax has been a fixture on their enormous main stage, drifting seamlessly between vintage house, esoteric disco and the various shades of a bubbling UK underground he has helped define. Occasional back-to-back performances with the likes of Hunee, Young Marco, Antal and Midland, all DJs regularly credited for their breadth of musical knowledge and sheer versatility, speak volumes for Donaldson’s DJing nous, which has lead him on an international trail; from South America to Australia, and from Panorama Bar to Concrete, Contact, De School, and Lux. Donaldson has also-amassed a patient, open-minded following with his cult monthly radio show, the decidedly less-than-culinary ‘Cooking with Palms Trax’, broadcast on Berlin Community Radio since 2015. On each show, Donaldson takes a deep, vinyl-led drive into his adopted history, fostering a level of trust and shared curiosity that has allowed him to helm all-night sets under the ‘Cooking with Palms Trax’ moniker. Into 2018, he’ll be holding down residencies in Boston, Glasgow and Bordeaux, as well as inviting like-minded DJs into his metaphorical kitchen, throughout a series of self-curated evenings into early mornings of music.

While working at OYE Records, she began her life as a DJ between a tireless party scene by night and days immersed in music. The duo's productions are the aural equivalent of leisurely summer strolls, and they generally contain warm chords, brisk beats, and lo-fi production values. The Steppers' first release was 2013's Life in the Zone, a 90-minute mixtape of original productions. Two of the tape's standout tracks, "Openin' Up" and "M Flight," were pressed to vinyl by Washington, D.C. label Peoples Potential Unlimited in 2014, and three more were collected on the Bubble World EP during the same year. Both of these releases, as well as Jutson's solo singles as Jack J, became favorites with underground house DJs and clubgoers, and the duo stepped up their international touring schedule. Under the Priori Moniker, Québecois musician Francis Latreille has established himself as a crucial voice in underground techno. His 2019 full-length debut On A Nimbus, released on his own NAFF imprint, was a haunting foray into the possibility/impossibility of technological utopia, where elements of dub techno, drum & bass, IDM, and tech-house curiously converged, resulting in an album at once familiar, modern, and undeniably singular. Francis followed that with a string of essential releases–from the slow-burning techy meditations of SCN and Little Flower to the anthemic, trance-inflected Infinity–ending with 2021’s Your Own Power. Priori is also an accomplished mixing engineer; a quick search will reveal an exhaustive list of credits on projects by Roza Terenzi, D.
