Asia Futurist, a compilation of nineteen leading Asian producers, is a project of Indonesian streetwear brand UNDERRADAR. While most artists on the compilation are from Indonesia, this also includes artists such as Ocean Lam and Mr. Ho from Hong Kong, HWA from Taiwan, perhaps better known as Elvis T, Unjin from South Korea, and others. Most of the proceeds from the sale of the album will be donated to Indonesian charities.

Most tracks on the album are high-energy, with strong bass and minor keys. HWA’s “Pulse of Night” stands out for its complexity, while Malaysian artist Notion A’s “The Game” taking an unconventional approach to his composition.

Basic Soul Unit’s “Silve Moon” is another track that adds layers as time goes on, to highly successful effect. Romi and Unjin’s track, “Return” strikes a different mood, with a much more reflective and pondering track, but unfolds over time.

Though the album has more tracks that can be discussed here, for brevity, let it suffice to say that while some tracks on the album stand out more than others, all share a high baseline of competency. In this respect, the album stands to add to anyone’s collection, providing a snapshot into the techno scene across Asia from some of Asia’s veteran DJs and producers. Despite the title, Asia Futurist may provide a glimpse into the history of the scene in Asia more than its future—yet, either way, it allows for a view into a solid body of work from a number of talented producers.
