Extracredit’s two-day streaming event, organized by DJ Ditto & Hydragen, was a multimedia experience in every sense of the word. The event brought together around thirty artists from the US, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Mexico, and other places.

What stood out about the event was the variety of formats that performances entailed. Whether it was using images of mushroom growth on the opening of day one, that eventually transitioned to digital green landscapes, sometimes this involved found footage. Other times, this involved digitally created images, or movie footage from as wide-ranging referents as Kill Bill and the Matrix.

Performers themselves also made appearances, sometimes simply streaming in front of the camera. But just as often, this might also involve elaborate filters or performers appearing in costume. Sometimes they might be livestreaming from home, other times seemingly in a club setting. Huntrezz and Mithril were among the acts to appear in VR environments, while Oxydoomer stood out with the duo performing in all-white clothes and face paint. The music selection was just as eclectic as the visuals for the event, ranging from techno and electronica to highly experimental fare.

With Extracredit citing that connecting in COVID times was one of the main motivators for organizing the event, the event was reflective of the decidedly post-Internet aesthetics of many streaming programs. However, Extracredit stands out as an accomplished iteration of this burgeoning genre.
