One of techno's true underground heroes, Function (Dave Sumner), has been DJing and making music for over 25 years. He is a founding member of the Sandwell District collective, an Ostgut recording artist, and the owner of Infrastructure.
Hailing from New York, Function was seduced by techno during the early 90s when Jeff Mills held a residency at Limelight, including his own first residency. Starting from the mid-90s, he began producing music and released his first 12-inch records on Damon Wild's Synewave label as well as his own Infrastructure imprint. In a serendipitous encounter in 1996, Function crossed paths with Regis (Karl O'Connor). The two collaborated as Portion Reform, delivering uncompromising music on Downwards and earning Function the distinction of being the only non-Birmingham producer to feature on the label.
In 2007, Function made a significant move to Berlin while maintaining his collaborations with Regis and forging a creative partnership with Silent Servant (Juan Mendez). This shift in location marked the intensification of his focus on Sandwell District. The label, which evolved into a collective, rapidly ascended to cult status by deconstructing the artist ego and blurring the boundaries between artists, labels, and DJs, ultimately reshaping the DNA of modern dance music.
