about
Saturday nights are made for dancing, so it’s time to return home to Headquarters and get ready to dance your night away as Darker Than Wax takes over upstairs featuring 404 Eros and Dean Chew - taking you on an odyssey of experimental soundscapes.
London born and raised duo, 404 Eros have been cultivating their eighties/nineties inspired 808 driven, synth-soaked sets since their university days. The two dance-floor romantics are constantly exploring a rich tapestry of sounds from Street Soul, R&B, Boogie, Lover’s Rock, House and Techno and more.
Now residents on @thelotradio and @nts_radio regulars, they’ve found a space to share their collections and provide the perfect soundtrack for your pre or post dance floor nostalgia. They’re known for taking us down musical rabbit holes to contextualise the music's origin and to put the music and musicians to the forefront of their narrative.
In 2021 they launched their cassette mix series, ‘5enses’ which is centered around evoking the 5 senses. Their listening experience involves inviting an artist to record an hour-long mix, an illustrator/graphic designer to design the cassette, accompanied by a unique smell and recipe created by their resident chef, @Ixta.Belfrage & Riaz Phillips. The project allows visual artists, directors, culinary artists to come together to create a unique 360 experience and support local charities such as Black Minds Matter. Contributors include Lord Tusk, Equiknoxx, Phuong Dan, Shy One Danielle, Dennis Bovel, Zakia & More.
With a djing journey of more than 15 years, Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew is a highly respected dj, selector, radio host from South East Asia.
Ever since the early formative years of immersing himself in raves and secret house parties during his uni years in Australia, Dean Chew aka Funk Bast*rd has been on a musical journey for as long as he can remember. He has cut his teeth playing in the legendary Zouk club / Velvet Underground in Singapore since the early 2010s and has grown a robust community around his Darker Than Wax parties and activations around the island. Together with co-founder Kaye, the duo have been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of leftfield music through the label, as well as recruiting like-minded souls to join in their cause.
It’s no surprise then that he has played alongside and supported some of the world’s finest like Benji B, Kyle Hall, Lefto, HAAI, Dreamcast Moe, Gerd Janson, Basic Soul Unit, Linkwood, Norman Jay, Souleance, Pearson Sound, Krystal Klear, Tiger and Woods, the late great Mike Huckaby, Seven Davis Jnr, Dj Ez, Fourtet and Dam Funk.
During the lockdown in Singapore, Dean has also worked on 2 volumes of the successful 12” series “Bodyclock” which focuses on lesser known artists in the house, boogie and deep techno realms. The series have garnered support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Bandcamp Weekly, BBC Radio 6 and many more. Constantly evolving and engaging through the power of music is what defines Dean Chew as an artist and most importantly as a human being.
All night long on the grounds of Headquarters, Thugshop’s very own - Haan
A perfect combination of dark sombre groove and hypnotic stomps that will drive your soul to ecstatic relief. A night brimming with dizzying barrage of peaks and troughs, of tension and relief to usher an early start to the weekend.
