about
Saturday nights are made for dancing, so it’s time to return home to Headquarters and get ready to dance your night away as Darker Than Wax takes over upstairs featuring 404 Eros and Dean Chew - taking you on an odyssey of experimental soundscapes.

London born and raised duo, 404 Eros have been cultivating their eighties/nineties inspired 808 driven, synth-soaked sets since their university days. The two dance-floor romantics are constantly exploring a rich tapestry of sounds from Street Soul, R&B, Boogie, Lover’s Rock, House and Techno and more.

Now residents on @thelotradio and @nts_radio regulars, they’ve found a space to share their collections and provide the perfect soundtrack for your pre or post dance floor nostalgia. They’re known for taking us down musical rabbit holes to contextualise the music's origin and to put the music and musicians to the forefront of their narrative.

In 2021 they launched their cassette mix series, ‘5enses’ which is centered around evoking the 5 senses. Their listening experience involves inviting an artist to record an hour-long mix, an illustrator/graphic designer to design the cassette, accompanied by a unique smell and recipe created by their resident chef, @Ixta.Belfrage & Riaz Phillips. The project allows visual artists, directors, culinary artists to come together to create a unique 360 experience and support local charities such as Black Minds Matter. Contributors include Lord Tusk, Equiknoxx, Phuong Dan, Shy One Danielle, Dennis Bovel, Zakia & More.

With a djing journey of more than 15 years, Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew is a highly respected dj, selector, radio host from South East Asia.

Ever since the early formative years of immersing himself in raves and secret house parties during his uni years in Australia, Dean Chew aka Funk Bast*rd has been on a musical journey for as long as he can remember. He has cut his teeth playing in the legendary Zouk club / Velvet Underground in Singapore since the early 2010s and has grown a robust community around his Darker Than Wax parties and activations around the island. Together with co-founder Kaye, the duo have been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of leftfield music through the label, as well as recruiting like-minded souls to join in their cause.

It’s no surprise then that he has played alongside and supported some of the world’s finest like Benji B, Kyle Hall, Lefto, HAAI, Dreamcast Moe, Gerd Janson, Basic Soul Unit, Linkwood, Norman Jay, Souleance, Pearson Sound, Krystal Klear, Tiger and Woods, the late great Mike Huckaby, Seven Davis Jnr, Dj Ez, Fourtet and Dam Funk.

During the lockdown in Singapore, Dean has also worked on 2 volumes of the successful 12” series “Bodyclock” which focuses on lesser known artists in the house, boogie and deep techno realms. The series have garnered support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Bandcamp Weekly, BBC Radio 6 and many more. Constantly evolving and engaging through the power of music is what defines Dean Chew as an artist and most importantly as a human being.

All night long on the grounds of Headquarters, Thugshop’s very own - Haan

A perfect combination of dark sombre groove and hypnotic stomps that will drive your soul to ecstatic relief. A night brimming with dizzying barrage of peaks and troughs, of tension and relief to usher an early start to the weekend.

With a djing journey of more than 15 years, Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew is a highly respected dj, selector, radio host from South East Asia. Together with co-founder Kaye, the duo have been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of leftfield music through the label, as well as recruiting like-minded souls to join in their cause. Being the main A+R and creative mind behind DTW, the label has flourished tremendously over the past 5 years, cementing its place as one of the go-to labels out of South East Asia. During this period, Dean has also ventured further afield, establishing links internationally and regionally, and played most recently at We Out Here festival in the UK, HÖR radio, Le Sucre in Lyon, Potatohead Bali, Dimensions Festival in Croatia, various cities in Europe, Asia, and Brazil. In 2016, he was also invited on Jamz Supernova’s BBC 1XTRA show to do a special label showcase, Rinse RM, and swung through the legendary Brownswood basement of Gilles Peterson for a 2-hour exclusive Worldwide FM mix. His extensive musical knowledge and tight mixing skills has earned him a regular spot on the station, and has proven to be one of the most trusted selectors and Djs to have emerged from the South East Asian circuit. The series have garnered support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Bandcamp Weekly, BBC Radio 6 and many more. More recently, he has also conceptualised his own venue, and through 2 years of planning and hard work, Dean finally opened Offtrack - a music-centric bar and restaurant in Singapore. The bar in a short span of a year, has not only secured a 50 best discovery list mention, but is also fast becoming known as an essential beacon for the community and traveling selectors to play when they visit Singapore. Constantly evolving and engaging through the power of music is what defines Dean Chew as an artist and most importantly as a human being. • HAAN A.

Introducing Haan – the techno underdog of Singapore. With almost a decade’s worth of experience behind the console, it was his passion for vinyl records that kick started the self-taught DJ’s career. Since then, Haan has developed a unique style of house and techno music that’s brimming with groove, taking him across the deepest and darkest corners of the island’s clubbing circuit. Describing his sound as dark yet melodic, Haan quotes the likes of TIN MAN, Redshape, Locked groove and Broken English Club as his musical inspiration. Staying true to his style—one that transcends genres—he brings it in a big way to the most discerning of dance floors. Recent years saw Haan on an upward trajectory, steadily paving his way to become a household name in the local nightlife scene. Haan caught the attention of TropicLab and was invited to join the collective shortly after. He was also on the bill for Super 0’s Openair Festival and things quickly escalated thereafter. Haan markedly grew into his own; he created and ran his own nights - #ashtag at Kilo and LeftBank at Cato – to showcase emerging talents as well as veterans who hadn’t been behind the decks for some time. He is also a Promoter/DJ for local label Midnight Shift and has played alongside deck legends such as Berghain’s resident Answer Code Request, Kink, Deetron, Xhin, Oxia, Spencer Parker, Oliver Deutschmann, Surgeon on top of a list of talented DJs and producers from around the globe. With all that had been accomplished thus far, there is no doubt that Haan looks set to stay in the circuit and fly the Singapore flag high across shores.
