Merve
Amongst the list of Australia’s most renowned dance music auteurs, at the top, you’ll find Merve.
Widely regarded by industry tastemakers, curators, and punters alike as a trailblazer within the underground community. The magic within Merve’s craft lies within her ability to traverse a broad scope of styles, defying genre restrictions and expectations, all whilst sounding consistently true to her own sonic signature. From sweaty underground basement parties, to sold-out large-scale festival stages, a set from Merve will pull you in and take you on a journey. The now Berlin based, Naarm/Melbourne native's early years in the music industry saw her lay rhythmic roots as a music programmer, curating event lineups, and contributing to a host of local community radio stations. Driven by a keen fascination with breaking down barriers between audience and performer, Merve explores the boundaries of each space she takes to, whilst blurring the dichotomy between light and dark. Merve jumps between genres with a seamless finesse, capturing the dancefloor with her undeniably infectious energy, always bound to deliver the unexpected. A key component within Merve’s creative process is her ability to pluck music from a rich cultural yesteryear, and curate it within a modern context; a symbiotic union which results in a refreshing dancefloor experience. This timeless approach to music curation has allowed Merve to take her craft to the global stage, clocking sets at Panorama Bar, Off Sonar Barcelona, De School Amsterdam, Body Movements Festival, Corsica Studios London, and Robert Johnson. Closer to home, she has performed on all of Australia’s biggest stages - Strawberry Fields, Hopkins Creek, Let Them Eat Cake, Splendour In The Grass, Piknic Electronic, and a now renowned 2019 Boiler Room debut recorded at Pitch Music & Arts Festival, which was subsequently selected as a top five performance by Resident Advisor. Supporting a host of the world's most renowned electronic artists Eris Drew, Octo Octa, Ben UFO, and DJ Pierre to name a few, Merve continues to align herself with the industries best and brightest, her ever-expanding resume proving she remains entirely in a league of her own.
Xiaolin
The HEX/HEXSCAPES founder, concert-violinist-turned-electronic-composer and 宀 club mainstay comes from a rare category of highly trained musicians looking to bridge the delicate gap between two sonic worlds: acoustic and electronic.Originally taking harmonic inspiration from her classical roots mainly of the impressionistic period, Xiaolin found early comfort in Canto-Japanese melodies from the 80’s YMO era and West coast hip-hop/R&B, later falling in love with 90’s Chicago/Detroit palettes as well as warmer breaks from the UK bass scene. Having experienced a breadth of genres from jamming over Arabic makams and gypsy jazz to playing agogos in a Batucada band, she produces an elusively ethereal sound that mixes hints of organic percussion into her signature dreamy electro ambience with Prophet-driven bass lines and Juno-60 pads, evoking feelings of early trance and acid house euphoria. Her thoughtful selections as a DJ sit within an energetic yet ever-comfortable tempo range, taking ravers on a journey through progressive body groovers sprinkled with raw breaks and nostalgic melodies, while her live electronic ambient sets reveal another more futuristic, textural and contemplative side of her natural musicality. Although still a relatively fresh face in the underground dance scene, the anime-loving, N64-gaming Xiaolin is quietly but steadily building a reputation for delivering music of integrity that doesn’t just make you dance - it always tells a story. Releases include a compilation 20/20 Vision (Exit Planet Earth) alongside Carl Finlow and Plant43, two EPS on Mihn Records, a feature track on Mr. Ho’s Klasse Wrecks label, with an upcoming compilation alongside Reflex Blue and NDS as well as three EPs on Berlin-based label Sound Metaphors’ “Bless You” imprint. Xiaolin currently hosts a bimonthly show on Baihui Radio China.
