Thailand's Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, initiated a night-time curfew extension effective New Year’s Eve, allowing venues in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Chon Buri to operate until 4:00 AM. This move aims to bolster tourism and stimulate the post-pandemic economy. Pol Maj-Gen Adisorn Ngamjitsuksri, the Tourist Police Commander, clarified that venues can extend operating hours only with a license under Article 3 of the 1966 Place of Entertainment Act.

While Silom and Thonglor areas maintain a 1:00 AM closing time, other regions adhere to midnight closures. Previously closing at 2:00 AM, Bangkok clubs' new curfew is championed by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as a tourism promotion strategy. Anutin emphasizes cooperation to mitigate potential issues, urging compliance with laws against drink-driving, illegal weapons, and drug-related activities.

Deputy Prime Minister Anutin, known for leading marijuana legalization, foresees collaborative efforts between police and the nightlife sector to implement the curfew successfully. The extended hours, approved for specific Bangkok areas, align with the government's commitment to economic revitalization.

In October, Anutin proposed the curfew extension to spur economic growth in 2024. Approval for venues in key locations to serve alcohol until 4:00 AM began on New Year's Eve. Despite optimism, concerns linger over the night-time economy's modest GDP contribution and potential challenges in ensuring safety during extended hours.
