Electric Soul’s Brian Hioe spoke to Cocoonics ahead of her performance this weekend during HEX at Mihn Club. Check the event on our platform here!

Brian Hioe:  First, could you introduce yourself briefly for readers that might not know you?

Cocoonics:  Hi I am Cocoonics, a music production cocoon, DJ, and doggo lover. Check out my new EP “wu…/HA!” and you will find a grass aflame. But my DJ set is in a wide range of styles ^.^

BH:  What excites you about Hex in particular? About collaborating with Xiaolin?

C:  I heard about Hex on Baihui and that time Xiaolin selected some chill lo-fi beats. Then I saw her DJing at Elevator in Shanghai blending some techno and breakbeats, some of which are also in my playlist! Wow.

BH:  What kind of set will you be playing this time?

C:  It’s my first time playing for Hex’s and Mihn’s crowd. I want to bring some Afro drums and world elements into my set, and keep the other options like techno, breakbeat, DnB, UK bass open. I like to change my selection sometimes after sound check also, let’s see 😉

BH:  What are the current projects you’ve been working on? Recent work such as the MV for “Why The End Of The World Has Not Yet Come” has you exploring Cantonese spoken word, for example

C:  Recently I am working on my new EP which will be released soon next year. It’s again an exploration of Cantonese spoken word, but more lyrical and energetic. While making the main track, I was thinking about the music video and visuals related to it.

That means, different from the usual music video shooting plan which starts after the track’s done, the video concept has effects on the production process of my track too. I have been collaborating with different experimental animation directors for their soundtracks and am fascinated by the magic of the sonic and optic together. This time I will try blending live-action and animation together.

BH:  Anything you’d like to say to listeners that will be attending Hex over the weekend?

C:  Wear T-shirts 😉
